This true story of a boy who must overcome prejudice and weakness to treat a group of special needs children with the respect—and love—they deserve “will give your innards a bear hug. . . . You will read this book with a lump in your throat.” (Lincoln Journal)
From Ron Jones, a teacher who started the classroom program that inspired the movie The Wave, comes a memoir about a life-changing summer.
Ron expected that his time as a counselor at Camp Wiggin would be filled with sunny days spent hiking, swimming, and boating. But when he arrives on day one, his illusions are quickly shattered. He knew that the kids would be “handicapped,” but he didn’t anticipate having to care for children who can barely walk or see or retain the use of their limbs. At first, the severity of the campers’ disabilities seems too much to bear. But everything changes once Ron gets to know his group—kids who call themselves “the Acorn People” because of the acorn necklaces they wear around their necks. The campers teach him that, inside, they are the same as any average kid, and with encouragement, determination, and friendship, nothing is impossible.
“A fantastic and beautiful story.”—Seattle Times
“Uncomfortably moving, yet told in surprisingly unsentimental terms. . . . Succinct and tender, it will haunt the reader long after the brief passages have been read.”—Houston Chronicle
"Ron Jones' true story of a group of handicapped children at summer camp is one of the most poignant, beautiful and eloquent tales to come this way in a long time."—Flint Journal

Review: This book was required reading for a class, and would probably pass it up due to the subject material. With that being said, I found myself smiling a few times, and eventually cheering for the main character. I read it under two hours, so I would say it's an easy read. Definitely a, "feel-good" story. Pretty predictable, with funny moments, as well as some heart-tugging tones.

Title: People With Challenges Are People
Review: I first came across this book at a used bookstore and what drew me to the book was the letter someone had written to the person they gave the book to.I decided to choose this as one of the books I donate to a lending library and that was because of the story. It really drove home the fact that people with challenges are people too.

Title: Amazing true heart melting story.
Review: The true story in this book was amazing. Loved it, especially since I have a multi needs granddaughter. I could relate except her condition fortunately is not fatal.

Title: An Inspiring Story
Review: The Acorn People by Ron Jones is a story teaching about respecting other people no matter what they look like on the outside. The story is told by a counselor at Camp Wiggin who at first doesn't realize that this camp is for people with disabilities. He feels awkward when they arrive, just like most people would, but then he realizes that they are nice people just like him and that he is doing a good thing. Some of the kids at Camp Wiggin-Benny B- He is African American and very small. He suffers from Polio and is in a wheelchair. He is the fastest one in his wheelchair.Spider- He has no arms or legs, instead he uses his mouth for everything. He loves to eat.Thomas Stewart- He has muscular scleosis. He is 15 or 16 but he only weighs about 35 pounds due to his handicap.Arid- He doesn't have a bladder so instead he uses a bag to store his "bodily fluids." He got his nickname from his smell.Martin- He is blind but he is them most able-bodied child out of the group. The Acorn necklaces symbolize friendship and the kids give one to all of their friends they have ever met. By the time camp is over everyone became friends with each other. After a few years the kids die due to their handicaps.I would recommend this book to everyone who can read.
