"This fascinating book will make the Civil War come alive with thoughts and feelings of real people."

The Midwest Book Review

The Civil WAR You Never Knew…

Behind the bloody battles, strategic marches, and decorated generals lie more than 100 intensely personal, true stories you haven't heard before. In Best Little Stories from the Civil War, soldiers describe their first experiences in battle, women observe the advances and retreats of armies, spies recount their methods, and leaders reveal the reasoning behind many of their public actions. Fascinating characters come to life, including:

Former U.S. Senator Robert Toombs of Georgia, who warned the Confederate cabinet not to fall for Lincoln's trap by firing on reinforcements, thereby allowing Lincoln to claim the South had fired the first shots of the war at Fort Sumter.

Brig. Gen. Stephen A. Hurlbut, who disbanded the 13th Independent Battery, Ohio Light Artillery, scattered its men, gave its guns to other units, and ordered its officers home, accusing all of cowardly performance in battle.

Thomas N. Conrad, a Confederate spy operating in Washington, who warned Richmond of both the looming Federal Peninsula campaign in the spring of 1863 and the attack at Fredericksburg later that year.

Private Franklin Thomson of Michigan, born as Sarah Emma Edmonds, who fought in uniform for the Union during the war and later was the only female member of the postwar Union Grand Army of the Republic.

Title: Very Surprised!
Review: Have never been a Civil War ( or what it should correctly be called, the War of northern aggression ) buff, although I have lived in Tennessee. But I was so pleasantly surprised by the stories, the knowledge I gained, and the deeper appreciation i gained for this time in American history. Simply a must-read book! Highly recommend!

Title: Good anecdotal version of the Civil War
Review: I wasn't expecting this to be much more than a light, hammock pre-nap, reading experience and was pleasantly surprised at the depth of research, information and history that is revealed in these anecdotal accounts of some of the Civil War's lesser known stories. Lots of the reviewers here do a good job of outlining the book's information; I will stick to a broader view.Don't be put off by the title. I think it gives an undeserved "jokey" feel to the book. Make no mistake there is a lot of seriously interesting information to be learned from the contents here. It is also presented in a straightforward, clear, manner. Lots of back-up source references, also presented in a nicely unobstructive way. Good bibliography for further reading that I know I will take advantage of.The only sleight negative for me was the quite extensive biographies of the two "First Ladies" (maybe 20%+ of the whole) at the end of the book. I found these accounts over-long, boring and not really up to the excellent standard of the actual war stories.Top marks for a complete absence of typos & grammatical errors. Always a bonus in Kindle presentations.Recommended!

Title: A view of a terrible time
Review: It doesn't matter which side you believe was right during the Civil War, because as this book shows it was a terrible time both North and South in the United States. When reading these stories in this book you are able to put a face on the people fighting on both sides. Now don't expect to come away with a clear cut answer to this war, because there may not be one to find in this book. More of an understanding of the people, who fought and died, will be found. Many of the people in this book were familiar to me from my college days studying the Civil War. Some were and still are rouges while others were saints, but someone else will have to make that call. If you are student of the Civil War these stories are worth reading I think.

Title: Interesting short stories
Review: Really enjoyed this brief history of the Civil War. A little confusing due to the character stories kept on being introduced in one chapter then that character is reintroduced later on. Interesting stories about many individuals.

Title: Historical Tidbits Galore
Review: A nice addition for anyone with a historical gene. Well written, nice flow. Not particularly thought provoking but the vignette style makes it highly readable. Kindle edition did not include photos which could have been a plus. Recommended for anyone who likes to read about the Civil War, especially trivial non headline generating material. Liked it a lot.

Title: Fun read, even for a non-history buff
Review: As I've gotten older, I've gotten more and more into Civil War history. However, even if you aren't a history buff, I recommend this book for you. It makes what I would call great "bathroom" reading. You get your information in very short sections, and works well for limited time (though you can read in chunks as normal!)This isn't limited, as the authors note, to the well known Civil War personalities. There are tons of things in this book - many of which I had never heard of. Examples:- the note from Pres. Lincoln to CSA V. President Stephens.- the almost first casualty of Fort Sumter, and the doctor's justification for helping him.- the congressional line of defense at First Bull Run.- John Brown's Body (the song) came before the Battle Hymn of the Republic.- Winston County Alabama voting to be neutral.- Frederick Douglas' eye witness testimony of how slaves were treated.- Gen. Longstreet losing 3 children to disease in just a couple of weeks.- The real life eagle that would become the basis for the shoulder patch of the 101st Airborne "Screaming Eagles".A very interesting book. Highly recommend.

Title: Not what I thought it was
Review: When I purchased this book I thought it was going to be short stories about people's personal experiences during the civil war. Unfortunately I believe this information is just military facts taken from Military records. Yes it is information taken right from actual accounts of the battles and politics surrounding the war but very little of is are stories from the life and times of the people who lived thru the war.

Review: This is the best book yet on the Civil War, not decrying the worth of every other pictorial and written history of the North-South conflict, but because is a raft of peculiar, ironic, and fascinating short reports on the period. I loved it, but then, I've always been interested in the period. I don't, however, think that's necessary to enjoy this book...even if you've never been particularly a history buff, I think you'd like the reportage, the sense of being there, and the sense of the on-going tragedy of war...this one, like all civil wars, bloody and evil, but punctuated with charming moments, wonderful, if flowery descriptive language, and first-person observation.
