Title: Just as good for movie fans as for movie workers
Review: Much more than what it pretends to be, Movie Speak is not the mere nomenclature of moviemaking terminology its cover suggests. It's actually a very funny and well-written guide to movies and the devilish details in the lives of the people who make them. If you work in the movies this book will be a short-cut to years of accumulating the kind of inside knowledge you could never get without tuned ears, sharp eyes and top crews, packaged in a handy format small enough to hide in your favorite fishing vest or cargo pants. But that said, this book might be even better for those of us who do not work in the movies and just like them, because Movie Speak will make watching movies more fun. And at $8.95 it's priced right as a gift for anyone into film. You get the feeling that Tony Bill has a great time in his job and more importantly for his readers, he enjoys sharing the best of his experience with us. Movie Speak is from the kind of guy who'd be rooting for you if you were in the film business. His book is fun, useful, smart and informative. All in all, a great read, a fine reference and a cool little gem.

Title: Glimpse into the film language
Review: I worked in film for over eight years and I still found phrases and words in the book that I hadn’t heard of while in film. Fun read and great stories!

Title: Quick, Entertaining, Informative Read
Review: I use this book when working at my school's TV studio. It's small and compact enough to keep on hand with you, and is organized like a dictionary for quick reference. While some of these terms may vary between jobs, I did find the majority to be accurate in everyday use. This is a great book for those that are learning terms, or are merely just interested in some fun stories about the film world.

Title: Speak Fluent Movie
Review: My son graduated from CSU San Francisco's film program last May. I bought this book and The Production Assistant's Handbook for him partly as mementos, and partly to fill in any gaps he might have in his film production savvy. Like so many bright kids, he absorbs data by osmosis and since he's already worked on 3 or 4 productions much of the info in these books may seem rudimentary to him. Nonetheless, as someone who has spent a lot of time on film sets in the '70's and '80's, and loved the lingo ("Give me a half-apple with the baby plate."), I thought the books were useful. Both are clearly written and don't take themselves too seriously.

Title: Cinema history in dictionary form
Review: The multi-talented Tony Bill shares his knowledge of film-set vernacular in this concise volume. How does the author make what in essence is a dictionary so incredibly entertaining? Bill's self-effacing, wise-guy sarcasm and dark-humoured slant on the derivations of this rather arcane and occasionally bizarre nomenclature makes for good reading, whether you're lingering over cocktails on the porch, or waiting in line at the DMV. However, anyone concerned about avoiding foot-in-mouth disease at the studio or on location would be well-advised to pack one of these little gems on his or her person at all times. My copy is in my brief case -- just in case. Makin' Stuff Up, secrets of songcraft and survival in the music-biz

Title: Required reading in my film and video technology classes
Review: This book will prepare you to walk on any film set and understand what people are talking about. Want to know the difference between a New York apple and an LA apple (not to mention a Chicago apple) this book explains it. "Go get me a stinger," your Key PA tells you. Do you know what to bring back? Keep the book in your back pocket...look under "S" for stinger and you discover it is an extension cord. Memorize it so you look like you grew up on a set. It's out in Kindle now so you can put Kindle on your phone and use it that way!

Title: Great little book for the money
Review: As with any book of this sort, there are bound to be countless readers who say, "You forgot ____!" I could do that, but I won't. It's not a comprehensive guide by any means; it's just a fun read. I don't agree with everything in there (for example, the idea that it's improper to set a c-stand horizontally and use sandbags) but I enjoyed getting an old-timer's perspective on things. It's well worth the price of admission.

Review: Still missing a few of the more "recent", I assume, jargon additions. Certain inserts have histories or stories attached to them. Written dictionary-style.
