Italy, 1943. In the hills outside Naples, the silver moon shines brightly on a whitewashed farmhouse. An urgent knock on the door breaks the silence: and in that moment, one young woman’s act of incredible bravery changes the course of the war.

For Carmela del Bosco, a farm girl in a remote Italian village, sheltering an English spy is the most dangerous thing she could do. If she’s caught by the fascists it would be the end, especially for her beloved grandmother sleeping soundly upstairs. But taking in the pleading brown eyes of the man calling himself Sebastiano slumped at her door, and his terrible injuries inflicted by the Nazi occupiers, Carmela remembers how Nonna always taught her right from wrong. Risking everything, she hides him in a ruined tower on the edge of the farm.

Each day Carmela tends his wounds, and the passion that kindles between them is a light in the darkest time. Sebastiano has information that could end the war, and needs her help to send it. But tracking down fellow members of the resistenza in the mountains meansrisking her life and bringing danger to everyone she knows.

Carmela knows she must find the courage to do what’s right for her country. But if she leaves the farm, will she ever see her beloved nonna again? And will her sacrifice tear her away from the only man she’s ever loved, forever?

An absolutely stunning and heartbreaking historical novel about the impossible choices people are forced to make in wartime. Fans of The Nightingale, All the Light We Cannot See and Rhys Bowen will be captivated.

Title: Great Book
Review: This book was a surprise it was one I could not put down. The plot centers on a family trying to hide a British spy from the Nazis. It has love, betrayal, mystery, twists you don't see coming. I really enjoyed this book and would have given it 5 stars except I found the main character to be frustratingly immature at times. But this book is still worth your time.If you enjoy reading about the Resistance may I suggest The Nightingale by Hannah or A Room on Rue Amelie by Harmel or The Secrets We Left Behind by Lane or A Fire Sparkling by Maclean or The Paris Secret by Lester and finally The Silk Code by Swift which is one of the best books I've ever read.

Title: Compelling historical read
Review: This book deserves 5 stars. It vividly described how residents of Italy suffered and triumphed through world war 2. It was difficult to put down, I would stop reading, shut of the lights for sleep, and get back up again to continue reading. The main character, Carmela was courageous and impulsive at times, taking risky chances. This was one of the best historical fiction of Europe during WW2 that I read this year.

Title: Sadness
Review: The story itself is not bad but was not for me. It was really hard for me to get into the story. I missed the emotions from the stories so much. Unfortunatelly I could not connect to any of them. It was interesting how they were strong and could survive all the cruel things the war brings.

Title: Love story to end all love stories.
Review: Carmella and Sebastiano's story kept me wondering right up to the end if they would ever survive the horrors of WWII. In the end I was not disappointed, but a few of my questions remained unanswered. As it should be, left to my imagination. Excellent read!

Title: Historical Fiction that feels real
Review: This story made me remember a book I read with middle school boys, Street Boys. The young urchins of Naples took to the streets and sewers to fight the German soldiers. So often the exploits in The Italian Girl’s Secret made me remember it. Carmela was an amazing woman who felt strongly about her grandmother and was confused about how her father felt about her after her mother died. Put the stresses of war on top of that, add an injured undercover soldier who needs help and a young woman with a caring heart and you have an excellent read. Enjoy!

Review: I have, as previously with Natalie Meg's books, devoured this book in a single day. Natalie is a superb story teller, and it is almost impossible to leave a page unturned. I thought that the book deserved an immediate 5 star review. The historical and geographical detail puts the reader right there, in Italian countryside where the weaknesses and faults of people who would otherwise have ordinary lives have terrible consequences. I think it is probably the best of the author's books - it is the tightest in that the cast of characters is quite small, well characterised, believable. It is also stomach twisting and haunting in parts. This is powerful confident writing. I too liked he roles of donkey and dog. Romance has a smaller part than in some of the author's books, and there is love in other forms -amongst families and between woman and aanimal. I thought that the balance was really good.

Review: A real page turner. This was very humbling to read. As reading this story I was aware that it was fiction, but based on real life events. The Italians really did suffer in WW2 and this story gives some insight into their bravery.
