"A masterly book." (Nassim Nicholas Taleb, author of The Black Swan)
"A classic." (Simon Kuper, Financial Times)
An economist explores the five laws that confirm our worst fears: Stupid people can and do rule the world.
Throughout history, a powerful force has hindered the growth of human welfare and happiness. It is more powerful than the Mafia or the military. It has global catastrophic effects and can be found anywhere from the world's most powerful boardrooms to your local bar.
It is human stupidity.
Carlo M. Cipolla, noted professor of economic history at the UC Berkeley, created this vitally important book in order to detect and neutralize its threat. Both hilarious and dead serious, it will leave you better equipped to confront political realities, unreasonable colleagues, or your next dinner with your in-laws.
The Laws:
Everyone underestimates the number of stupid individuals among us.The probability that a certain person is stupid is independent of any other characteristic of that person.A stupid person is a person who causes losses to another person while deriving no gain and even possibly incurring losses themselves.Non-stupid people always underestimate the damaging power of stupid individuals.A stupid person is the most dangerous type of person.
This audiobook includes a downloadable PDF that contains the gain and loss graphs from the book.

Title: Lots of hard truths about people
Review: Interesting approach to reality and perspective about the world and stupidity even from a scientific standpoint. Not written in a sarcastic manner but definitely makes you laugh here and there.

Title: Practical, concise and hilarious
Review: A lot of formal philosophy should take a hint from this book. You don't need 500+ pages to get your idea across. It clearly and effectively presents a system for classifying and understanding people affect on the social organism, and provides some helpful advice when dealing with dangerously stupid people, which the author argues are even more damaging to society than exploitive people because where exploitive people take value away from others to give it to themselves and their friends, stupid people take value away from others while making things worse for themselves, and thus lower the overall goodness circulating in human society. Fascinating theory

Title: Concise. Might not have enough examples for some.
Review: This book is short. Unlike lots of the recent econonomic or behavioral science books it does not waste pages with tons of examples or cute anecdotes. It is a welcome change. The author is very focused on getting to the point quickly but is still entertaining. Since the author is an economist, a decent understanding math is necessary to understand the text. As a result, this book is not for everyone. While it is a very short read it is worth your time. You will find yourself agreeing with the authors points. More importantly, the book gives you a framework to help measure the destructive destructive power of stupid people. I recommend it as a gift for any recent graduate entering the workforce.

Title: Everything Makes Sense
Review: I didn't get the forward by Mr. Taleb when i first read it."What does he mean when he says at the top-left corner of every page he thinks he's reading a satire but when he gets to the bottom-right corner it's a serious, scholarly work that causes him to pause and reflect?" I wondered. Now, after finishing the book, I get it.I wish I read this book years ago, and re-read it every morning since! Oh, well, better late than never.

Title: Stupidity
Review: Not very convincing theme. Statistics not presented to validate his theory. More anecdotal than scientific and a waste of time. Would not recommend this book to anyone.

Title: Insightful and Sadly Accurate
Review: Short read, but does open oneâs eyes to the world around us. Sadly true once you reflect and apply. Society as we know it, may be done.

Title: A Rational Reference Manual
Review: Like so many things in life I wish I had known about this many years ago. Be intelligent. Read this Book! Itâs a stupid simple formula for understanding irrational behaviors.

Review: This is the most excellent book Iâve ever read, but I am barely reluctant to give a five-starrating simply because the author lacks a deep insight into the mechanism of thedevelopment of stupidity. According to Christianity, since Adam and Eva sinned, theywere expelled from the Heaven garden. Instead of acquiring wisdom, they developed thediscriminative mind that is equivalent to the veil of ignorance according to Buddhda (seeSurangama sutra), which is represented by the human brain! The human brain is helpfulfor interindividual interaction, but it is also a filter, blocking humans from the data as itis. The data as it is is only perceived by the Omniscient mind of God represented by JesusChrist or Buddha. Human beings may be momentarily omniscient or permanently omniscient through meditation to attain enlightenmentKien Maið
