Filled with rare images and untold stories from filmmakers, exhibitors, and moviegoers, Forbidden Hollywood is the ultimate guide to a gloriously entertaining era when a lax code of censorship let sin rule the movies.

Forbidden Hollywood is a history of "pre-Code" like none other you will eavesdrop on production conferences, read nervous telegrams from executives to censors, and hear Americans argue about "immoral" movies. You will see decisions artfully wrought, so as to fool some of the people long enough to get films into theaters. You will read what theater managers thought of such craftiness, and hear from fans as they applauded creativity or condemned crassness. You will see how these films caused a grass-roots movement to gain control of Hollywood-and why they were "forbidden" for fifty years.

The book spotlights the twenty-two films that led to the strict new Code of 1934, including Red-Headed Woman, Call Her Savage, and She Done Him Wrong. You'll see Paul Muni shoot a path to power in the original Scarface; Barbara Stanwyck climb the corporate ladder on her own terms in Baby Face; and misfits seek revenge in Freaks.

More than 200 newly restored (and some never-before-published) photographs illustrate pivotal moments in the careers of Clara Bow, Joan Crawford, Norma Shearer, and Greta Garbo; and the pre-Code stardom of Claudette Colbert, Cary Grant, Marlene Dietrich, James Cagney, and Mae West. This is the definitive portrait of an unforgettable era in filmmaking.

Title: If you love films from this era, you need this book!
Review: This book would be worth it at twice the price if you love films from the early 1930s. This book is extremely well put together, a quality product, even if it was printed in China. The vintage photographs are some of the best I've ever seen in a book about Hollywood. The stories about the films are very informative and welll-written. The bottom line here is that there is nothing NOT to like about this book. The only thing that would make it better is if it had more great stories and photos. This is money well spent.

Title: Great coverage of a fascinating film period
Review: I generally like the big, glossy TCM books (I have 4 of them), and this one, on the pre-code era of the early 1930's, is a great addition. I was vaguely aware of the pre-code era and the movies from that period, but this fills book lifts the fog in my partial understanding of the whys and wherefores. As with all the TCM books, this one is loaded with fabulous photos, most of which were new to me and some of which were a bit startling. The text is thoughtful and well researched, but it's intended for a general audience and is devoid of academic speak. Highly recommended!

Title: Great photos!
Review: Great book. Found some of the text a bit dull (it tends to go on and on about the politics of why these movies got made and then Hollywood stopped making movies like these -- I just want to hear about the movies and not get a history lesson -- and it lacks a comprehensive list of Pre-Code movies - I wish someone would put out a guide like that as it's quite easy to find ones for Film Noir, for instance. Photos in this book are fantastic!

Title: INTERESTING?
Review: Most of the information about this book I already knew, but I thought I could pick up on new information. The commercials on television are racier than what's in this book. Although it was stated that many of the scenes had been removed from various films during that period; which is what they should have explained more about what was going on in the thirties.

Title: An interesting and informative book that will surprise you.
Review: First of all, I want you to know that the book is well bound and beautiful. Looks great in a bookcase or on a table. But more importantly, it is a page-turner and extremely interesting. I grew up in the 1940s and 50s watching old movies on our black and white TV set. Many of these old movie stars and their performances were shown late at night and on the weekends. But in those days, all of the "nasty bits" were cut out and some movies that ran for 90 minutes or longer were trimmed heavily to fit into one hour (with commercials) time slots. I had no idea what I was missing. This book shows that a lot of film stock ended up on the cutting-room floor at a lot of TV stations in those days (and probably still do to fit arbitrary showtimes with commercials.) If you love old Hollywood history and the performers of that time period, I guarantee that you will love this book.

Title: "Behind the scenes" Hollywood
Review: I am still reading this book and I do like the "dirt" being dished. I knew of the Code and now I am learning more about it. An excellent read thus far.

Review: A great review of the formation of the industry. An industry trying to find its footing as storytellers in a developing medium that gave us some of the techniques and tropes we see in contemporary film.

Review: It’s a fascinating and enticing area of film history and crucially it’s place in society as a whole. So revealing to compare it to today’s movie output, drenched as it is in cruel and casual violence and male sexual agression.
