American tavern owners caused a sensation in the late eighteenth century when they mixed sugar, water, bitters, and whiskey and served the drink with rooster feather stirrers. The modern version of this "original cocktail," widely known as the Old Fashioned, is a standard in any bartender's repertoire and holds the distinction of being the only mixed drink ever to rival the Martini in popularity.

In The Old Fashioned, Gourmand Award–winning author Albert W. A. Schmid profiles the many people and places that have contributed to the drink's legend since its origin. This satisfying book explores the history of the Old Fashioned through its ingredients and accessories―a rocks glass, rye whiskey or bourbon, sugar, bitters, and orange zest to garnish―and details the cocktail's surprising influence on the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel and the Broadway musical scene, as well as its curious connection to the SAT college entrance examination. Schmid also considers the impact of various bourbons on the taste of the drink and reviews the timeless debate about whether to muddle.

This spirited guide is an entertaining and refreshing read, featuring a handpicked selection of recipes along with delicious details about the particularities that arose with each new variation. Perfect for anyone with a passion for mixology or bourbon, The Old Fashioned is a cocktail book for all seasons.

Title: Not just a bar guide
Review: This book was actually as I had hoped. Not only does it give original recipes with notable variations, it goes into the history of the drink, which is what I wanted. I paired the book with a nice bourbon, old fashioned glasses, fancy sugar cubes, high end cherries and a muddler and it fetched a pretty penny as a silent auction item in a charity event. Everyone loved looking at the book.

Title: Unique recipes
Review: My dad loves Old Fashioneds so I gave him this book for his birthday with a couple jars of gourmet Italian cherries -- it has great recipes and thorough explanations. It even has a recipe for the Pappy Van Winkle old fashioned -- I just wish it had a trick to finding the Pappy!

Review: While we're on the topic of fine bourbon, let me tell you about a book that focuses entirely on one (mostly but not always) bourbon drink. If there were to be a homage written to a deserving mixed beverage, then this is the book and the drink - "The Old Fashioned: An Essential Guide to the Original Whiskey Cocktail" by Albert W. Schmid ($14.95, University Press of Kentucky, 128 pp.).The Old Fashioned lays claim to being the original cocktail and there's enough documented history available to earn that honor. But most likely the cocktail came first generically and the anachronistic name would be assigned during the latter half of the 19th century. A beverage of the appropriate ingredients is first called a cocktail in the early 1800s but it wouldn't be until the 1880s that a Louisville club is credited with the Old Fashioned name. Of course, there are alternatives to this story that trace the roots to other cities and Schmid acknowledges those in this book. Nonetheless, he gave the nod to the Pendennis Club as the most likely originator of the Old Fashioned name.Schmid's book is an incredibly detailed account of the history (yep, even more than the paragraph above) of the Old Fashioned. And I do mean detailed. He breaks it down so far as to talk about the various ingredients that came to make up the Old Fashioned. He also tells the story of how the Old Fashioned glass came to be. There is a load of information that Schmid has painstakingly assembled and I can confidently guarantee that upon finishing this book, you'll know more about the Old Fashioned than any of your friends or acquaintances.
