This little black book was discovered in an attic in 2015. The typed recipes and instructions are a direct translation of the handwriting seen in the photographs on each page. To preserve its authenticity, no extra instructions have been added. The cover is a photograph of the actual book (with title added.)
Bring your tablet into the rural English kitchen of 1910. Relive the tastes and smells of an age where there were no microwave ovens or digital scales. Back then, cooking was done on a Yorkshire Range.
This is not a book for the complete novice. You won't find any "preheat the oven to 200° " instructions. Their skills were not only in baking, but also maintaining the oven at a constant temperature, remember the heat came from the coal and wood, no thermostatic controls or glass fronted oven in doors existed back then. Grandma would feel the oven door knob to gauge the heat of the oven. However, if you can bake scones and know by looking at things when they are "done," you will enjoy experimenting as they did, adapting the recipes to your own taste.
Since grandma knew how to bake, she didn’t include step by step instructions in each recipe because she knew what to do, so no repetitive instructions were noted.
The book was compiled before the First World War when young women visited each other's houses swapping recipes, as well as catching up on the latest gossip. Funny little markings on some of the recipes, ( a cross "X" with a dot between each line ) was a star rating, four dots being the best. The recipes included instructions like "place the chocolate and sugar into a bowl and warm by the fire, stirring until melted" ( you will probably pop them into a microwave for a few seconds )The hand written recipes contain simple ingredients available at that time. Self raising flour was not in common use, baking powder was used with plain flour.UK measurements are used; oz, lbs. and pints. Gills and quarts are given as mL and fluid ozs. Also terms like "bake in a quick oven" are used, a handy guide to all modern settings is given on the "Conversions" page. UK measuring cups and spoon sets are readily available online.
During the pandemic of 2020, I found myself being confined to the house, I decided to put my time to good use and revisit the shoe box containing Grandma's little black books of recipes and notes. I have published another recipe book - "More of Grandma’s Little Black Book of Recipes from 1905 to 1927.” Another look of what our ancestors ate. Above alll…Enjoy the taste of Yesteryear!

Title: What a delight to read the recipes of 100 years ago
Review: This was a delightful cookbook to read. My grandmother married in 1910 so this gave me insight to what type of desserts were being made then. Sweets were not served daily in my grandmother's home but she always had a cookie jar filled with tea cakes even when company wasn't expected. Now, her favorite cake to bake for guest was a coconut cake made from breaking open a whole coconut with a hammer. She never measured any ingredients. Flour and sugar was poured from a bag into the mixing bowl a nice size lump of butter was spooned in, lots of eggs and a capful of vanilla extract. ( I learned as a child the cap on vanilla extract is equal to a teaspoon and that continues until this day!). I plan on trying a couple of the recipes. Thank you for sharing this attic find with us!

Title: Not as pictured
Review: I thought I was getting what was actually pictured, a little black book of recipes not an oversized photo copy of a book. The recipes have been retyped up and left original. There are typos and a little interpretation is needed as some of them say " bake 10-15 minutes in a quick oven." Flip to the front and a "quick oven" is 75-400 degrees Fahrenheit? I presume that's 375-400. It does have photos of the original recipes which is interesting and nice to see. Overall there appears to be approximately 50 recipes. Most seem to desserts. Very unique piece of history to use and keep handy especially for special occasions.

Title: Familiar
Review: This was so much like my grandmother and great - grandmother's black books of recipes or receipts as my great - grandmother called her book. My mother had one and I do too. I have inherited them and have made many of the old recipes over the years. My great grandmothers ancestors were British and Irish and the recipes in this book were just the as the ones I have. Also back then ladies rarely wrote their everyday menu recipes down because you didn't measure, you cooked from memory for those foods. Cakes and desserts and fancy dishes had measurements and were written. My grandmother has been dead 20 years and was 100 when she died. When she was in her 80's she asked me to make cream puffs by her old recipe and egg custard pie. She was delighted and said they were like eating in old times. This book is wonderful for those of you who were not blessed with a grandmother born in the late 1800's like I was and got to know her into my early adulthood. I encourage everyone to have a Little Black Cook Book because my nieces, nephews, daughter and granddaughter have all taken recipes from mine and it will pass on.

Title: A bad reproduction
Review: On the site it looks like you are getting a book about cooking from 1910. Received the book. NOT THE BOOK, but a bad reproduction. Pages cut into little pieces not the original pages. Photo taken then reprinted in the book. If it is professional covers and hand written inside.

Title: Not exactly what expect
Review: Was not exactly as expected yet was still a fun item to read. A few words in there make your head tilt a bit as terms have changed over time.If nothing else it has been a fun read.Would purchase again for even a gift to someone who likes to cook.

Title: Packed full of Memories!
Review: What a delightful little book (emphasis on little)....This was like a road trip back through time to the days when I would watch my great grandma cook on her wood stove. I am 88 and have enjoyed many cookbooks but this one truly made my heart smile. Like the author says you need to be an advanced cook and Baker SS gives you ingredients and a rough idea of what to do but it is not full of directions for a novice. It is assumed that you understand bread baking and custard making before you even open the cover. I have tried several recipes including parking which is a version of gingerbread and the wartime fruitcake which is exactly like she used to make! No frills here...just straightforward basic ingredients...with delicious results. (PS . Treacle is molasses)

Review: I accidentally gave one star for delivery and the page turned before I could correct. Delivery was good. Now as to the book, I enjoyed it, it is very similar to my grandmotherâs book, maybe even the style of book itself, very small. My grandmother was an excellent cook but most recipes were in her head. The book was reserved for what I presume were special but unlikely to be used often recipes. The women of that generation, generations preceding and the one after were generally very good at cooking. I am on the lookout for any and all recipes from way back when. Size is not important when the quality is good.
