"Lidey subscribes to the same theory of home cooking that I do. We all want recipes that have ingredients you can buy in almost any grocery store, recipes that are easy enough to make without breaking a sweat that will be delicious and satisfying for either an ordinary weekday dinner or for a special occasion." —Ina Garten, from the Foreword

From the rising star who learned to cook when she worked for Ina Garten, 100 recipes that are cook-pleasing and crowd-pleasing and written with the shopper, chopper, and dish-doer in mind.

Lidey Heuck landed the most plum after-college job—working for Ina Garten in her East Hampton kitchen. There, she learned how to develop recipes that work every time and how to put together dishes that are at once special and unfussy.

Cooking in Real Life represents the golden middle ground that new and experienced home cooks crave: recipes that are inventive but not overly complicated, that use familiar ingredients but encourage us to do things a little bit differently. They are designed to be low-effort, practical, and high-reward. Lidey combines straight-forward delicious cooking with innovative, vegetable-forward recipes, inspired by bold flavors from near and far. Chapters and recipes include the following:

Busy, fuss-free weeknights: Salmon with Honey and Chili Crunch, Cider-Glazed Sausages with Apples and Fennel, Saucy Shrimp alla Vodka. Plus, dozens of ideas for turning single recipes into one complete meal (Think: adding some sauteed shrimp to Shaved Carrot Salad with Ginger Tahini Dressing).

Flexible, seasonally-inspired recipes with easy-to-find ingredients: Maple-Roasted Squash with Grapes and Shallots, Escarole with Cara Cara Oranges, Spicy Paloma Punch.

Celebratory dishes for occasions that call for something extra special: Short Ribs with Port, Shallots, and Cranberries; Champagne Chicken; and Rainbow Sprinkle Ice Cream Cake.

Throughout, Lidey includes swaps, make-ahead hacks, and tips for making leftovers into something new. Cooking in Real Life meets you where you are—whether you're here for the practical tips or the endless possibilities.

Title: For Cookbook Lovers and everyday cooks!!
Review: As a cookbook lover, this book is a must have! I’ve been following Lidey since she was working with Ina and I’m so happy and excited for her 1st cookbook! First let me say that the recipes all look amazing and appetizing and made with fresh ingredients. The directions are clear and concise and I know that they have been tested multiple times. I love the format of the book with most recipes on one page with a beautiful photo of the finished product right next to it.The little “story” or introduction to each recipe is a nice touch and makes it truly unique and memorable. I also like the make ahead and leftover or substitution suggestions. If you’ve been cooking for years or whether you are just starting out, this is definitely a cookbook that you’ll want to have because the recipes are ones you can make everyday.I’ll be choosing “Cooking in Real Life “ when it’s my turn to host Cookbook Club.I’ve pre-ordered my copy and I’m looking forward to getting it.

Title: Best Cookbook I've Bought In A Long Time!
Review: I still enjoy having cookbooks to look through rather than just searching online. I have about 70 cookbooks after purging ones I rarely looked at. My rule is if there are 6 recipes in a cookbook I like then it's worth keeping. At first glance everything looked great to me in this cookbook, definitely more than 6 recipes I know I'll like, more like 20. I've already made Saucy Shrimp alla Vodka and topped pasta with it, Spaghetti with Sweet Corn Pesto, and Cider-Glazed Sausages with Caramelized Apples & Fennel.....just for myself. All were fabulous and easy weeknight meals with great flavor.I'm a big Ina fan and have all her cookbooks. I make dozens of her recipes all the time. Mostly for company rather than just weeknights. I've been a bit disappointed in her last 3 cookbooks thinking she's been following current food trends rather than what she is best at. Definitely prefer her earlier cookbooks.Lidey definitely learned things from Ina. This cookbook is more reminiscent of all the recipes Ina has been known for over the years, yet each different in their own way. Best of all it truly is a great cookbook for everyday cooking if you want little effort with great taste at dinner time.Congratulations Lidey.....like I said "Best Cookbook I've Bought In A Long Time!"

Title: New favorite cookbook!
Review: This is a beautiful book FULL of recipes easy enough for beginners with results that look elaborate and taste amazing. I'm working my way through each recipe and every one has been delicious. If I had to pick a couple of favorites thus far: Kale Salad with Gouda, Honeycrisp & Walnuts; and Grilled Skirt Steak with Romesco Salsa. Each guest I've served one of Lidey's recipes to has gone on to purchase the cookbook!

Title: So good and so easy
Review: Fabulous read and terrific recipes. Things that you can find locally. The “Melon and Cucumber Gazpacho” was a huge hit at a party. The “Ratatouille Lentil Soup” was also a hit. Hearty and delicious. I showed this book to a friend who is a gourmet cook and she ordered it on the spot!

Title: Great addition to my cooking library
Review: I have followed Lidey from her days with Ina, her summer at The Lost Kitchen, and Instagram videos. This made me anxious to get her first cookbook, which did not disappoint. It is filled with creative, doable recipes, of which I have already tried several. Her book is highlighted with her own personal thoughts for each recipe (I love a good narrative before trying a new dish) and beautiful illustrations. It is evident that every page of the book was well thought out. This would be a great cookbook to add to anyone’s collection, be it a novice or seasoned cook.

Title: Not for the seasoned, experienced cook
Review: I'm in my 50s and love to cook, including complicated and advanced dishes. For that reason this book was too simple for me, and I've made similar versions of almost all of the recipes in the book. Haloumi cheese, chili crisp (try flybyjing instead - MUCH better), the latest fabs, nothing new. Disappointing. I also found that there's a recipe only on every 3rd or 4th page, and not enough main dish recipes to make this worthwhile. So I'm returning it. For a younger person, just starting out, though, this might be a good book.
