The cost of pet healthcare is rising faster than many pet owners can afford to pay out-of-pocket especially when they are faced with a large and unexpected veterinary bill. Therefore, more and more pet owners are looking for ways to reduce their out-of-pocket costs.

Dr. Kenney shares how pet insurance can be part of a strategic plan to pay for pet healthcare. There are many sources of information about pet insurance online e.g. pet insurance websites, consumer blogs, review websites, etc. What these lack many times, however, is a veterinarian's perspective when it comes to customizing and purchasing a pet insurance policy. Why is this important? Because veterinarians spend everyday diagnosing and treating conditions for which their clients will end up filing claims. They know what diseases/conditions they see frequently and the costs of diagnosing and treating these conditions.

Dr. Kenney is uniquely positioned to give advice about pet insurance because he not only practiced small animal medicine and surgery for over 42 years, but he has also been blogging and podcasting about the pet insurance industry for over a decade. He has often said, "Pet owners don't know what they don't know. Therefore, you will read crucial information in this book that you won't find anywhere else e.g. pet insurance company websites, consumer blogs or review websites, etc. - information that will help you make an informed decision about whether you should consider pet insurance for your pet as well as the essential information you must know before purchasing pet insurance.

Title: Good overview of pet insurance principles...includes helpful podcast and such for added "texture"
Review: Pet Health Insurance: A Veterinarian's Perspective is a good, general overview of pet insurance principles and plans. It includes helpful podcasts and such via smartphone for added examples and "texture." I found the discussion about the perils of "Pre-existing Conditions" to be very helpful. After reading the book I thought I made a good choice in picking a pet insurance plan for my 9-month-old Mini American Shepherd, but the underwriter came back with exclusions for any/all intestinal issues because of a minor easily treated condition that we inherited from the breeder. Because of the information in the book about the impact of pre-existing conditions on coverage, I immediately canceled the policy during the grace period. I decided that the cost of premiums, deductibles, premium increases year-over-year, and the unnecessary exclusion of an entire biological system based on one minor incident would not be cost effective in the long run. The "gotcha" of many plans is the emotional appeal to "what if you're pet gets hurt or really sick," but most issues can be ameliorated by good preventive care, and accidents/illness are pretty much "the price of admission" for all of us living things.

Title: and I feel a lot better knowing my little Shaunah
Review: I suppose this book would be a lot of help, however, my vet told me about Nationwide insurance for pets. I looked it up on the internet, and telephoned them. They very patently discussed their major-medical plan and their wellness plan. I purchased both. It is very affordable compared to vet bills, and I feel a lot better knowing my little Shaunah, (female Maltese puppy), is covered. Good luck to all who own pets! They areGod's gift to us humans.

Title: Incredibly valuable!
Review: This is an incredibly valuable book. It’s an easy read that provides exactly what you need to know and consider when selecting pet health insurance. It’s straightforward and to the point, not wordy or filled with jargon. It left me so much better prepared to select an insurance plan! It covers all sorts of things to consider and to ask insurance companies about before enrolling in a plan, many of which I would not have anticipated. It also covers issues to consider at plan renewal time. It points out numerous pitfalls to avoid, as well as strategies to use to customize plans for the best fit. It also has many links to other sources of information relevant to selecting pet health insurance. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has pets, and also think that this book would be helpful to veterinarians in answering clients’ general questions about pet insurance.BTW - One reviewer criticized the author for not recommending specific companies/plans. I feel quite differently. There are no “one size fits all” pet health insurance plans, and what is best in my situation may be quite different than what fits you in yours. Plus, a book with such information would get dated very quickly. Lastly, although I have not yet fully explored his website, I have seen some such companies addressed in the author’s blog and podcasts (petinsuranceguideus dot com).

Title: Why We Owe it to our Pets to Read Dr. Kenney's Book and Take Action
Review: Our pets give so much to us and ask for so little. Isn't it worth your time to read a short, 80-page book that lays out the facts about pet health insurance? I think so, which is why through the years I've found Dr. Kenney's insight and materials to be so helpful for choosing the best plan for my dog. Nope, it's not a ton of fun to do research like this, but neither is being forced to euthanize an animal because the cost of treating it exceeds our financial capabilities. We owe it to our animals to sit down for a few hours and figure out how to give them the care they deserve.I love the way the book has direct links to Dr. Kenney's podcasts. His chats with veterinary and insurance experts offer so much insight into choosing an appropriate plan. His copy in the book is easy to understand and if you stick with the suggestions your pet's health care will be much better off than it was before you had a plan. Before Dr. Kenney came along, I had chosen a pet health insurance for my dog that didn't come close to meeting his needs or covering costs when I needed the help. Thanks to his suggestions we now have a plan that most recently, covered him for a $5k emergency surgery that probably wouldn't have happened if we had had the previous plan. Essentially, Dr. Kenney saved our dog's life and we will be forever grateful. As co-founder of the Tripawds website and community, we can't say enough great things about this book. If you have an animal you owe it to get a copy and take action so you never have to make the heartbreaking choice of economic euthanasia.
