Locals go to the B.T.C. Old-Fashioned Grocery in Water Valley, Mississippi, for its Skillet Biscuits and Sausage Gravy breakfasts, made-to-order chicken salad and spicy Tex-Mex Pimiento Cheese sandwiches, and daily specials like Shrimp and Grits that are as good as momma made. The B.T.C.’s freezers are stocked with take-home Southern Yellow Squash Casseroles and its counter is piled high with sweets like Peach Fried Pies as well as seasonal produce, local milk, and freshly baked bread.
“Be the Change” has always been the store’s motto, and that’s just what it has done. What started as a place to meet and eat is now so much more, as the grocery has become the heart of a now-bustling country town. The B.T.C. Old-Fashioned Grocery Cookbook shares 120 of the store’s best recipes, giving home cooks everywhere a taste of the food that brought a community together, sparking friendships, reviving traditions, and revitalizing an American Main Street.

Title: All original recipes
Review: Bought this cookbook after it was referenced on a TV show. It's not a typical cookbook with pretty pictures and simple recipes. All the recipes are interesting, authentic originals and the resulting dishes taste good. Some people are turned off by the cookbook because many of the recipes are labor intensive and require ingredients they may not have on hand. I look upon it as a weekend cookbook for foodies. Of course we frequently double the recipes so we have leftovers for mid-week meals. Actually, many of the recipes improve with age and that probably worked to Dixie's advantage in the diner part of the store. This isn't a cookbook that'll satisfy everyone's desire to quickly whip up a meal and impress their friends. I'd look upon it as a cookbook for someone that enjoys food adventures in their home kitchen and loves to experience wonderful meals with interesting flavor combinations.

Title: Outstanding
Review: I am biased, I admit. It's not because I know these people, and I've never been to the store nor even to Water Valley. But I did grow up in a tiny town in North Mississippi, and the life Alexe Van Beuren describes in this book is spot-on. It not only took me back to my childhood, it also left me with a smile remembering all the people from my hometown. But the recipes are also great. Some are traditional that I've had countless times in my life. Some have a nice twist, though, and this book has earned a special place on my kitchen shelf. I debated on whether to order the Kindle version or the hardcover book and opted for the book. I am glad I did, because this one's a treasure. Not only did I enjoy the recipes and the stories, but I am now looking at property in the area as possibility of making this area home when I move back to the south in the next couple of years. This is a must-have if you are Southern and grew up in a small town.

Review: Overall a good cookbook, but the Still Magnolia cake in my book calls for drained fruit cocktail and you have to have the juice to make the batter. It could have been a type o in my issue. I will think thru the other recipes before I start to make one.

Title: Wonderful Book
Review: This book has great stories about community and the South. Then there are the recipes for dishes many of which were frequently on our table when I was a child although none of ours called for Coca Cola; I canât wait to try these recipes. This book made me long for simpler times. Thanks for a great read.

Review: Not bad. Just Not as good as I'd thought it would be. Guess I've been cooking far too long. Being 65 can do that for you.

Title: Can a cookbook be a work of art? Because this one is!
Review: I love this book/cookbook. From the texture of the book, it feels just good in your hands, to the quality of the pictures and the paper, this book is truly art. The recipes have my mouth watering and I love all the stories along with the recipes. I am a Mississippi transplant living in Las Vegas, and it makes me long for home. This book shows the best of the south and has my mouth watering! Food is love!
