Foreword Reviews' 2016 INDIES Book of the Year Award, Silver Winner in Self-Help

In many ways society teaches us to try to have everything under our control. If we are honest, we tend to think that this can be true even of our spiritual lives. But Mark Yaconelli eloquently expresses the reality of our situation:"We are small, sensitive creatures with short lifespans, in a world that is often chaotic, capricious, mysterious, terrible and wonderful all at the same time. Failure, disappointment, loss and other difficult experiences call us to accept our humanity, feel grateful for what has been given, receive the care of others and seek guidance from the Holy Spirit."Using extraordinary stories from his own life and the lives of others, Yaconelli offers a narrative journey through ways in which disappointments have turned into gifts. In these pages are a wealth of spiritual practices that will carry us deeper into the grace we find in unexpected places.

Title: I recommend this book to any with an open mind and ...
Review: I read Mark's book as a meditation, one chapter per day and found it generated much thought, inspiration, and self-examination. Each story that the author tells carries a life lesson that he amplifies with carefully designed questions at the end of each chapter. The author is clearly coming from a base of Christianity, but he is not hard-selling his faith here, simply being real about how he sees things and gently leading the reader to consider the meaning each story might have for them. Even if you are not of Christian orientation, I think you will find the stories to be inspiring and thought-provoking on their own. Mark is a master storyteller. I recommend this book to any with an open mind and heart.

Title: Buy one for a friend. A worthy gift.
Review: This book makes no effort to solve the deepest and most painful issues faced by our broken human race. But the stories here are breathtakingly told and deeply moving. And the authors words will stay with you, long after the last page. If you want to ground yourself in the reality of every day disappointments, and the centrality of a loving God, this book is for you. Would be great for a small group discussion. And should be shared with a friend! Worthy of a good conversation.

Title: A Must Read Book
Review: Seriously one of the best books I have read in a long time. Mark’s stories are both funny and gut wrenching. His applications are spot on and his explanation of spiritual issues is both informative and inspiring. I so appreciate the questions at the end of each chapter. While this has been a great personal read for me, it would be perfect for small groups.

Title: Thoughtful stories to explore spiritual pain
Review: A wonderful exploration of the very human experience of suffering. Yaconelli offers tales from the front lines of his own life and includes meaningful theological discussion around those stories. A great book for a church-based book club or class. Also, a very grace-filled read for those in professional ministry who might be experiencing burnout.
