For decades, Katie D’Angelo and Valerie Harrison engaged in conversations about race and racism. However, when Katie and her husband, who are white, adopted Gabriel, a biracial child, Katie’s conversations with Val, who is black, were no longer theoretical and academic. The stakes grew from the two friends trying to understand each other’s perspectives to a mother navigating, with input from her friend, how to equip a child with the tools that will best serve him as he grows up in a white family.

Through lively and intimate back-and-forth exchanges, the authors share information, research, and resources that orient parents and other community members to the ways race and racism will affect a black child’s life—and despite that, how to raise and nurture healthy and happy children. These friendly dialogues about guarding a child’s confidence and nurturing positive racial identity form the basis for Do Right by Me. Harrison and D’Angelo share information on transracial adoption, understanding racism, developing a child’s positive racial identity, racial disparities in healthcare and education, and the violence of racism.

Do Right by Me also is a story about friendship and kindness, and how both can be effective in the fight for a more just and equitable society.

Title: The perfect book for this white mother of a Black son
Review: This is one of many books on the topic I am reading and I love how it goes back and forth between the two authors. I relate to the white adoptive mother of a mixed race boy, Dr D'Angelo, and I crave the education from the Black academic, Dr Harrison. Some of the content reiterates what I'd learned from previous reading, and some is new.It may sound small, but thanks to this book, I have added regular haircuts to our family schedule. I've felt confident when explaining the cultural value of grooming to white friends and family who suggest it's not needed for a toddler, or that Black boys' hair is not "as challenging" as Black girls' hair, so why overthink it?Thank you, Dr D'Angelo and Dr Harrison, for putting so much of yourselves into this book.

Title: This book is for ALL parents raising Black, Biracial, and Transracial Children
Review: Let's be clear I do not have adopted children and I'm a Black woman. This book covers all of the underlying conversations that we have that affect Black children in American society today. While showing how the relationship between the authors transforms both of their lives to raising Gabriel. This is a biography wrapped in data and research which makes it an engaging book to read. The point of view from both authors was seamless because they have characters of themselves before each paragraph that they've written. So the reader clearly knows who is speaking while also giving you a clear idea of their points of view. This book covers inequity in education, disparities in healthcare, the history of American Racism, talking to our children about racism, and intentional parenting. With clear steps to raising a black child in white spaces. In my goal to provide my children with a quality education. I have placed them in white spaces but I never thought of some of the hazards that may occur beyond the ones that I have faced. These authors did a beautiful job of helping me reflect on how I can improve.

Title: Anyone who is interested in building a better and more just world will benefit from this wise book
Review: This was yet another wake-up call for this white mother to white bio babies and another step on a journey of understanding the history and present culture of racism. The intelligence and openness shine through personal stories, history lessons, and a long time friendship of the authors. Very readable, and not at all heady, this book is enlightening, thought-provoking, and smart. Made me rethink my personal experiences and beliefs in relation to race, class, and education.

Title: A guide for parenting ALL CHILDREN.
Review: This is a well-researched IMPORTANT book written for white parents of children of color but applicable to all parents of all children. Doctors Harrison and D'Angelo tackle this subject from different perspectives giving their subject clarity and authenticity.

Title: Makes you think...
Review: The way the book is structured, D’Angelo and Harrison make you feel as though you are with two friends having a down to earth discussion - part history lesson, reality check and real life guide. It is straight to the point(s) with heartfelt stories to clarify. The book details the importance of learning about and embracing diversity and the impact (and responsibility) we all have as a community in raising children - really powerful. I had lots of emotions and thoughts from reading. A question that stands out throughout the book and challenges the reader - is what will the reader commit to for change and growth? Something I will continue to think about. Well done!

Review: These two brilliant women (Val & Katie) deliver such a wonderful guide, not only for parents of Black children but anyone seeking a clearer understanding of USA’s past, present, and future. I love the way they alternate their voices throughout, making such an informative text feel so intimately conversational. I sincerely hope many, many people read this book to better understand the myriad ways a society deeply-rooted in white supremacy continually impacts the health and well-being of Black children.
