UPDATED July, 2024! With its abundant sunshine, striking natural landscapes and relaxed lifestyle, the Southwestern United States is a wonderful place to retire. Unfortunately, many towns in the Southwest are expensive. Places such as Flagstaff, Arizona and Georgetown, Texas are often hailed as great places to retire, but they have living costs well above the national average.

Here, though, are 18 Southwestern towns with living costs close to the national average, determined primarily by housing prices. Some of these spots are fairly well known, while others are still off the national radar. All of these places have safe neighborhoods, recreational and/or cultural amenities, a local or nearby public library and local or nearby accredited medical facilities. Each also has a welcoming quality that makes it a desirable place to live. No one place is perfect, however, so we take a look at each town's drawbacks as well. Reviews are short for quick reading.

Title: Good Information
Review: This is a very good book. I'm in the process of looking for a place to retire. The author took the work out of 18 cities for me. My only wish is that it included more cities. Maybe in the next edition. 🙂

Title: 52 page pamphlet
Review: Not worth the money. It is a 52 page pamphlet with very large typeface, margins and spaces in between .

Title: Not much for the price!
Review: Not much info or substance for the price. I wouldn't buy this author again. Most of what was presented I probably could have found on the internet in less than a 1/2 hour.

Title: Not very informative
Review: Just a few brief paragraphs about each town. Most info readily available on the internet. Needs more research, as well as analysis
