"Around the world, Washington, DC, is known for its powerful government, majestic monuments, and world-renowned museums. Secret Washington, DC: A Guide to the Weird, Wonderful, and Obscure reminds us that the fabric of the city isn't solely embedded in its callous political parties, exhausting lawmaking policies, and rampant tourism. Rather, it's woven through its rich and complex history, mysterious relics, underground societies, forgotten and abandoned buildings, and controversial scandals. From the assassinations of Presidents Abraham Lincoln and James Garfield and Francis Scott Key's son, to crimes of passion and rage at the US Capitol, Secret Washington, DC uncovers many of the dark and untold truths of how our nation emerged. At the same time, it shines a bright light on the capital s numerous signs of creativity and innovation through the exploration of quirky art installations like Foamhenge and Barbie Pond on Avenue Q, to oddly shaped and decorated homes like the Mushroom House and the Vanadu Art House."

Title: Interesting, funny and a blast to read!
Review: "Secret Washington DC: A Guide to the Weird, Wonderful, and Obscure" is truly a lot of enlightening fun, and while the lucky reader is at it they will laugh quite hard and be educated at the same time. They say it's not the tale, it's who tells it, and that's never been more true than in this quirky guidebook. The author's background as an educator, world traveler and first generation American make its way onto these pages. I've only been to a few of the places described in the book, but due to the way the author was able to find a unique angle of focus, it didn't matter. I read the book while on vacation at the beach, and my wife kept asking me what I was laughing about given...I was reading a guidebook. I read different passages aloud and we laughed together. I would love to see some more from this author, especially in regards to all the different places she's been. I highly recommend this book and not just for those who are headed to DC. Itâs worth it anyway for many reasons.

Title: Great resource to compete your DC itinerary
Review: From Corinthian Columns to Plane Parks to Tough Trees to Endless Escalators to Ancient Apothecary and much much more... this book easily showcases amazing places to see perhaps in between your travels to the usual attractions or as destinations unto themselves for those of us who frequent DC and are looking for more subtle bragging rights regarding our first hand knowledge of this amazing city. The book has great anecdotes and easy to follow directions about The Who and the what and the where of each location. It can actually make your next trip feel a bit like a scavenger hunt. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys filling in their trips with more than just the usual tourist experiences. Great resource.

Title: A must-have guide to D.C.!
Review: Armed with this wonderful guide, I will be headed to Washington D.C. this summer as soon as everything opens up; I can't wait to visit the sites that the author has written about so engagingly. Her research is incredible â she truly opened my eyes to so many interesting, "weird, wonderful, and obscure" places, people, and events. I learned something new on every page! The book is super entertaining and informative, the photography outstanding, and the bibliography is also incredibly helpful. I will be gifting this book to all my D.C., Virginia, and Maryland friends.

Title: The Washington DC sites you really need to know about
Review: As long time residents of the Northern Virginia area we have spent much time in our Nations Capital, a city that we love. The rich history and incredible museums, restaurants, waterfronts and sports venues are just the beginning. Secret Washington, DC is just what we needed to embark on a new and different way to see our city. We enjoy the "off the beaten track" guide to the unusual or forgotten or unknown niches in DC . Who doesn't love scandalous bits of history? This book is truly awesome and a must read whether you've been to DC a hundred times or planning a first visit.

Title: A Fun and Informative Read!
Review: JoAnn Hill has written a book that's fun to read and most informative. I live in Washington, DC and knew of some of the quirky places JoAnn writes about but didn't know the background story. I was surprised and delighted to read about so many hidden and interesting places that were new to me. This book is a great guide for Washingtonians and visitors who look for obscure (many are free) "off the grid" places. I highly recommend it.

Title: Made me miss DC so much!
Review: My wife and I have not lived in DC for a couple of years and found ourselves really missing the city. I was looking for something new to read about our former home and stumbled across this book. I must say that this book did not disappoint! So many interesting, quirky and historical facts about DC that I did not know. Every time I turned the page there was a place I had yet to visit (but soon will!) or a secret that I was thrilled to be part of. I would recommend this book to all DC lovers or if you are traveling here and looking for some very enlightening facts of such a great city. Reading this book made me miss DC even more!

Title: So many gems to see in this book when visiting DC!
Review: I have lived in DC since 2002 and I have seen so many wonderful and exciting things in the city. It never fails to amaze me. Joann did an exemplary job of finding spots that a veteran hasn't seen yet. I enjoyed seeing some spots that I did know about but maybe not the full history and some spots that our family will definitely search out in the near future. Top for my daughter is the Living in a DC Barbie World! DC is packed with so many things to see but I would recommend picking up a copy of SECRET Washington, DC when you come into town and hit some of the spots in it's pages.

Title: Not a good guide at all.
Review: This book while informative of odd quirky places in the city, does not have any real "guide" information. It is not useful for travelers. It might be good for kid's to use as a reference to write papers on odd things found in DC.
