Jeanne Fogle Lyons—a historian, professor, and certified tour guide in Washington—and Elan Penn, the gifted photographer who created the superb From Sea to Shining Sea, combine their talents to create a breathtaking and fascinating homage to America’s capital city.

Lavish images of fabled monuments, world-famous museums, distinguished universities, and lush parks—all accompanied by fascinating background information—pay tribute to the beauty and history of Washington, D.C. From government buildings such as the Capitol, White House, and Supreme Court to outdoor statues of Ulysses S. Grant, Mary Leo Bethune, and Mahatma Gandhi, this unique visual tour captures the city’s riches as never before. Visit Mount Vernon, George Washington’s splendid home and plantation; the awe-inspiring Lincoln Memorial; the Arlington National Cemetery, where the eternal flame burns over John F. Kennedy’s grave; and the Smithsonian, which protects the glories of our past. Watch government at work at the Federal Triangle Department Buildings, see the lovely sculpture garden at the National Gallery, and feel the magnificence of sacred structures such as St. John’s of Lafayette Square. Every photo, from Ford’s Theatre, where Lincoln lost his life, to Maya Lin’s heartbreaking Vietnam Memorial, is inspirational.

Title: Great to remember a DC trip
Review: I bought this book to share with my 11 year old grandson prior to a trip to Washington DC and then have looked at it often to reminisce about the trip. Wonderful photos of all of the major landmarks.

Title: Excellent pictorial overview
Review: Having visited DC for the first time in four decades, I relied upon online travel venues to glean information about sites I wanted to experience. Big mistake! Upon returning, I purchased a used copy of this book through Amazon at a serious discount. The photo quality is superior, some taken from vantage points not possible with a standard camera lens. All photos depict clear skies, perfect weather, and at many sites the ubiquitous cherry blossoms. There are many sites not properly identified on online travel venues, like TripAdvisor. Example: "The House Where Lincoln Died" is across the street from Ford's Theatre, but is labeled "Peterson's Boarding House." Although that building was Petersen's [this is the correct spelling] Boarding House, the National Park sign clearly states "The House Where Lincoln Died". I had no way of knowing to search for Peterson/Petersen.For future travel experiences, I intend to purchase through Amazon pictorials of those destinations, so that I can better schedule the limited time available.

Title: Great book!
Review: Saw this book in a B&N bookstore on a recent trip to WDC. Bought it off of Amazon when we got back for a Christmas gift for my husband. Has great pictures and info/tidbits on the buildings, memorials, and monuments in DC.

Title: A Wonderful Find!
Review: I have begun giving these as exchange gifts w/the various foreign visitors my office associates with. They really appreciate the books either because it enhances their visit to the DC area or due to time constraints, they were unable to visit any of the sites pictured in the book so they use it as a reference. What I like about Jeanne's book: how the various topics are divided into sensible categories, that it's quickly updated (eg, the MLK memorial was included in the last order), the beautiful pictures, the concise backstories of each photo, the generous size of the book.
