George Esperidis

The history of Athens is inseparably linked to my family's history, and this probably accounts for my tender feelings towards this city - a city of myth, a city born of myths, a town that has spawned myth. A passion for history and legends of ancient times led me to the Department of History and Archaeology at the National University of Athens, where I devoted myself entirely to studying the history of Byzantium and Medieval Europe, languages, and the history of art. This guidebook is my humble attempt to share my love for Athens and the stories that fill it with anyone who decides to discover the Greek capital from an unexpected perspective – not as a mere "transit point" between the airport and the port, from which ferries depart to all the Greek islands, and not as a mere "appendage" to the Acropolis, but as a living imprint of 4000 years of history in these places. I wholeheartedly wish you a wonderful stay, unforgettable experiences, and welcome to my Athens.

Title: Academic-style writing-not user friendly
Review: This book is written in an academic style chronicling key antiquities and history around the city. Photos are all old black and whites from days long past.Slow reading, not user-friendly in terms of indexing sites covered.Long on monuments, famous dead people and churches, but very short on useful tips for a first-time visitors - a few pages (8) out of 182.Well-intentioned but not fun to read. If you are a first time visitor with little time to spend in Athens, look elsewhere to travel book brands written for tourists.
