It's the phenomenon: 1,000 Places to See Before You Die has 2.2 million copies in print and has spent 144 weeks and counting on The New York Times bestseller list.
Now, shipping in time for the tens of millions of travelers heading out for summer trips, comes 1,000 Places to See in the U.S.A. & Canada Before You Die. Sail the Maine Windjammers out of Camden. Explore the gold-mining trails in Alaska's Denali wilderness. Collect exotic shells on the beaches of Captiva. Take a barbecue tour of Kansas City—from Arthur Bryant's to Gates to B.B.'s Lawnside to Danny Edward's to LC's to Snead's. There's the ice hotel in Quebec, the Great Stalacpipe Organ in Virginia, cowboy poetry readings, what to do in Louisville after the Derby's over, and for every city, dozens of unexpected suggestions and essential destinations.
The book is organized by region, and subject-specific indices in the back sort the book by interest—wilderness, great dining, best beaches, world-class museums, sports and adventures, road trips, and more. There's also an index that breaks out the best destinations for families with children. Following each entry is the nuts and bolts: addresses, websites, phone numbers, costs, best times to visit.

Title: Great Book for Travelers!!
Review: I just got this book and I love it. I always had wanted the 1000 Places to See Before You Die (world edition) but decided against it b/c I felt that I would never have the opportunity to use the majority of the book. When the US & Canada Edition came out, I was so excited. There are so many places you can enjoy in your home state or drive a couple of hours and see many places you never even heard of!! The book has major landmarks and well as less known sites ....in addition, it also has restaurants, hotels, shops, golf courses. I would definitely recommend this book for people of all ages...I am in my early 20s and can't wait to see some of these places throughout the US and Canada. It is a great gift...if you don't know what to get someone. Even if you can't travel frequently...it's a great source to read and learn more about our country. In addition, I used the Amazon standard shipping!! I couldn't believe how fast I got the book....I ordered it Tuesday afternoon and it was already here by Thursday morning!!

Title: 1000 Places To See
Review: This is my second copy of this book as it seemed like everyone that saw it was to thumb through the pages. Thus the pages begin to get shop worn even though tihis was an almost new book. I purchased another copy for just me this time and left the older copy out for everyone that wanted to read could do so. There are many interesting places to viist a great number that I did not know about and I consider my selfself a world traveler. It's the local "stuff" in the 50 sattes that I seemed to have missed. You can't go wrong with this book and it's companion book on 1000 places in the United States and Canada. This book will not easily go out of date and part of the fun is planning a trip that will take in several of the recommendations on a single trip.

Title: Just got the book but love it
Review: We just got this book yesterday, but already I am planning our road trips for the next few months with this book's assistance. Excellent descriptions of places and events. For example, we went to the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta last year (2006) and the book's description of the Fiesta and surrounding area in New Mexico was outstanding and accurate. In my opinion, if the author does this good of a job conveying information about something we are familiar with, then I will trust her about the other places she describes in her book. The book is organized well with a nice index and use of pictures and maps. Text-heavy (which I like) and easy to read. We are excited about using it to add to our vacation trip experiences.

Title: Ideas for "where to go next?"
Review: We'd "Been there, seen that," so Patricia Schultz's 1,000 PLACES TO SEE IN THE U.S.A. & CANADA BEFORE YOU DIE has sparked a renewed "travel bug." The book consists of short summary reviews of many interesting places; some are destinations and some are simply a stopping place along the way to your next big adventure. Geographic/natural sites as well as interesting places in an area are included. The basic geographical organization of the book is good, but with the sections I found sorting through the listings by the aurhot's title of the selection annoying (i.e. California begins with "Berkeley & Chez Panisse" in the northern part of the state, follwed with "Beverly Hills" in the southern part, the next two are, again, back in the north etc). I would have prefered all listings within a given area to be clustered together. Ms. Schultz does a good job including sites that appeal to diverse interests and ages; spas, golf courses, downtown areas, places of cultural and historical interest and some of the significant festivals or events. "Gentles, perchance you wonder at this show..." begins the Oregon Shakespeare Festival article; her writing is consistently reflective and interesting. It's not just another travel book of facts - you'll still need those, but enjoy this first.

Title: For the Hard to Buy For Person or Adventurer
Review: Really interesting book. Gives you so many ideas of where to go, what to do. If the person is hard to figure out what to buy for, this is a great present. They are presented with a book that let's them explore their own curiosity whether they actually go to the places or not. Can take you on a mental trip just imagining where you'd be willing to go and where you'd have to be dragged to. For the fun loving type, this is perfect too - offers many ideas you wouldn't necessarily think of for yourself to go and do. Holds your interest and prompts some to get off the couch and actually GO and DO something. Excellent bathroom reading book too. Fun and imaginative book.

Title: Great for the traveler
Review: Great for either planning a trip or as you travel and drive through an area. It includes the typical tourist places you would expect but also attractions that you may never have heard of. It includes enough information to decide if it's a place you are interested in as well as giving a little history and information about the town or area in general. At first I didn't like the way areas are grouped together, but as I used the book it made sense. Of course out of the 1,000 spots you aren't going to be interested in all of them, that's the point. You pick the spots that interest you. Definitely an addition to a travelers bookcase.

Title: Now I Just Need Time and a Few Million Bucks
Review: I love this book - and while I think I have been to a lot of places, this book points out so many things I haven't seen and now want to put on my own personal "bucket list." I could honestly envision myself packing up, hitting the road, and just going from place to place with this book as a guide. Too bad I don't have the resources to go do it full time!If you're looking for a vacation idea for a long or short getaway or even a longer trip, start here!

Review: Sehr klein geschrieben, alles auf englisch und fast keine Fotos. Material erschlägt fast. Dennoch gutes Nachschlagewerk für die Schule. Zum Reisen bzw. Reiseziele eher abzuraten.

Review: As a regular visitor to North America (particularly the USA) and an owner of the first `1000 Places To See Before You Die', I bought this with much anticipation, and it didn't disappoint. Those familiar with the global edition will know what to expect - the book is arranged region by region, state by state. All the main attractions of the USA that you would expect to be included are, such as the Grand Canyon, Empire State Building, Mount Rushmore etc. What makes the book worthwhile are the numerous, lesser known attractions, often away from the beaten tourist track, interspersed with pictures every few pages. This is probably because the focus on one continent, in contrast to the global edition, allows for a wider and more thorough range of places to recommend. This book shouldn't be considered an outright travel companion, as it has little information on accommodation and general travelling advice. It won't replace Lonely Planet or Rough Guides, but if you have space in your luggage, it will make a useful addition to these. And those not able to make space for it, or who don't visit N. America often - it works just as well as a miniature coffee table book!

Review: This book is perfect for those who love driving, planning their drive and not missing the most important sights. If you are based in the USA or Canada this is a 5* book, if you are based in the UK, like me, then you are going to have to visit North America many times to get full value. So far, I've managed to see 45 of the main attractions listed and have yet to be disappointed. If you find that you enjoy touring in North America, I would also recommend "Road Trip USA" by Jamie Jensen and "The Most Scenic Drives in America" a Reader's Digest publication which both give good ideas for routes and one or two different ideas. Give yourself lots of time for your tours because distances between attractions can be enormous.
