The essential guide for every patient and family

The doctor’s office called. It’s not good news. What comes next? When you are diagnosed with a life-changing illness, it can be overwhelming. While your diagnosis cannot be changed, the way you experience your illness can.

In Hope for the Best, Plan for the Rest, Dr. Seow and Dr. Winemaker have combined their decades of palliative care research and experience in caring for seriously ill patients. They have harnessed the advice of thousands of patients to create a roadmap that every patient and family will benefit from. In it, they share the 7 keys to unlock a better illness experience and reveal stories, tips and exercises to improve your journey right from diagnosis. These two compassionate experts empower you with practical tools to take charge of your life-changing diagnosis and navigate the health care system with confidence, knowledge, and calm.

This book is about hope in the face of uncertainty. It’s about how to live well, be fully informed, and be activated. How to feel more like a person, not a patient. But most of all, how to be hopeful and prepared at every step along the way.

Title: This book illuminates pathways!
Review: A life-changing diagnosis can often come with a secondary diagnosis of tunnel vision, where life is viewed through a lens adjusted by our healthcare system and others, limiting one's perceived options and ways of moving forward. This book widens that lens, demonstrating that Hope and planning are key, embracing a broader spectrum of possibilities.

Title: Two roads…
Review: As a palliative care social worker, there is such good language we can use with our clients that connect to them and meet them where they are at. Their energy and passion is infectious and I absolutely love their podcasts. Having this book is just the icing on the cake!

Title: A palliative doctor in your pocket
Review: Hope For The Best Plan For The Rest is written by two palliative care physicians who specialize in maximizing your quality of life while living with a serious illness like cancer, dementia or heart failure. They bring an enormous depth of experience to this book that aims to guide you through our fragmented healthcare system so that you can get the medical care you both want and need. As a palliative care physician myself, I can say the advice in this book rings true to my own experience working with patients. If you are someone who likes to plan for every possible outcome, someone who is a straight shooter, or someone who identifies as a strong self-advocate this book is definitely for you.

Review: As someone with thirty years experience in the field I can say this book is both accurate and inspiring. It's a great read for anyone who has to deal with a health situation either themselves or with a loved one. The author's voice is welcoming and their advice is practical and actionable. Full of case vignettes to illustrate and bring home the 7 keys to empowering yourself, I honestly would recommend this book to everyone!

Review: I read this as a clinical psychologist working in a palliative care setting and thought it was excellent. A very easy read with a clear road map within. The reader can dip in and out and access specific nuggets of information from different chapters and case vignettes. The take home message is: finding out more about your diagnosis is likely to leave you feeling more grounded than frightened.

Review: This book is an excellent companion to "with the end in mind…" by Dr Mannix. I am going through metastatic cancer. As a retired physician I have been in contact with patients, including children, also facing a terminal illness and the difficulties they face. The book is essential to understand the cogwheels between you the patient, the people who care for you and managing the medical pathways as well as understanding what usually happens near your death. It is also essential for people who are caring for you or frail relatives, not just cancer patients, those carers may be in this role for many years while being unwell themselves. This book demystifies the term "palliative care". Palliative care is not just for the "moribund", and this huge body of knowledge and care should be called for at a much earlier stage of your illness for the family team (at large) to understand what comes next and how to manage it. I intend to ask for a palliative care consultation soon, I am not moribund but I want to make sure I am not missing out on some essential advice, especially for the people who care for me.

Review: MY FIRST EXPERIENCE WITH DR. WINEMAKER WAS TO BE ABLE TO SPEAK WITH HER ABOUT AN ELDERLY FAMILY MEMBER THAT WAS SUFFERING WITH MANY SYMPTOMS THAT THE FAMILY DID NOT UNDERSTAND AND DID NOT KNOW WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT; THE SECOND, AND MOST WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE, WAS WHEN SHE AND HER TEAM MET WITH THE FAMILY MEMBER AND HER SIBLINGS; SHE BECAME OUR COACH AND BROUGHT LIGHT AND CLARITY TO EVERYTHING WE HAD CONCERNS ABOUT; THAT MEETING CHANGED THE WAY THE FAMILY LOOKED AT THE PRESENT AND PROVIDED A VIEW OF THE FUTURE; MY WORDS CAN NOT COMPLETELY PROVIDE PRAISE TO HER BOOK AND HER INCREDIBLE BENEFITS; SUFFICE TO SAY THAT THE 'PRAISES' IN THE FIRST FEW PAGES OF THE BOOKS SAYS IT MUCH BETTER; I CAN'T PRAISE THE DOCTOR HERSELF AND THE JEWELS OF INFORMATION IN THE BOOK; AS A RESULT, I HAVE JOINED 'THE REVOLUTION'

Review: Wow. This author present palliative care for much more than the preterminal effort most MDs like me consider it to be. It's for and about people with chronic illness all of whom need support and insiht they don't commonly get, not just the dying. I wish I'd read this long ago it would have helped me to help many patients and their families through the years. A must for most MDs, these patients and their families/caregivers.
