Diogo Jota - Portugal

What an incredible rise for the young man of Porto who had stayed the course. At the age of 17 he signed with the prestigious Atlético de Madrid, for whom he would never play! Tossed from loan to loan, Diogo José Teixeira da Silva – his real and full name – finally set fire with the Dragons of Porto before traveling to England. The arrival on the Wolves bench of his compatriot Nuno Espírito Santo helped to facilitate the move.

The Lusitanian armada of Rui Patrício, João Moutinho and Rúben Neves in the Wolves squad helped to assist the integration of the promising winger. It took him but a short time to start piling on the exploits at Molineux, the Wolves’ iconic home venue. When he moved to the Premier League in 2018 Jota, after 13 matches without scoring a single goal, finally found his groove: in January he scored a hat-trick against Leicester City and became the first Wolves player to achieve this in the top echelon since John Richards had done so 42 years earlier!

David Alaba - Austria

At the age of 13, David left the family nest for the Stronach Akademie, the training centre of Austria’s Vienna. The following year he was spotted during a match in Tyrol by the famed Bayern Munich scout Werner Kern. Arriving in Munich, David initially found his integration tricky. The mentality at the German giant was hard to get used to, the Bavarian club arriving at tournaments spectacularly dressed in the official club tracksuit and in the most beautiful coach. Above all, Bayern always seemed to walk away with the trophy!

It was this culture of winning that Alaba learned over time, imposing himself on the team and earning a place in the first team as a rampaging left back, becoming known in the Rhine region as the ‘complete footballer’ – a nickname that was coined even before he was a regular in the dominant Bayern squad, then under the tutelage of Louis van Gaal.

Antonee Robinson - USA

Robinson’s career progression was almost derailed by a heart problem. He was set to move from Wigan to AC Milan on the January 2020 transfer deadline day but the move fell through due to a heart irregularity that was discovered in his medical exam. He moved to Fulham for the new season but the London club was unable to avoid relegation from the top tier. No matter: a stellar Championship campaign in 2021–22 underpinned by no fewer than 36 appearances from their rock-solid left back saw the club win the title and promotion. Robinson’s form earned him a place in the EFL Team of the Year.

Propelled back into the EPL, both Fulham and Robinson went from strength to strength. His club form ensured he was a fixture for the United States men’s national soccer team during qualifications for the 2022 World Cup and again in Qatar. He became an internet sensation following the United States’s victory over Iran and progression to the knock-out stage of the tournament.

About The Stars of Football

The Stars of Football profiles more than 90 players, telling the stories of their rise to prominence and major successes. The book is packed full of anecdotes about the biggest names from the elite club leagues and the World Cup . . .

. . . and what a World Cup it was in Qatar, with so many emotions! It was ultimately a cruel campaign for France: Kylian Mbappé’s gang did not deserve to lose the final via a penalty shootout, but one nation had to lose. Conversely, Leo Messi’s Argentina hit the jackpot, Doha becoming the venue for this genius’s long-awaited coronation and giving Argentina their third World Cup and their first since 1986.

For this edition you will discover new stories and extraordinary tales of destinies achieved. The profiles in this book will explain how the lives of many football geniuses changed and evolved and also serve as models of success for all aspiring footballers.

Title:
Review: Fabulous action photos. I bought this for my 10 year old grandson, and a pictorial view of the players was important and this book delivers in spades.
