New for 2020! Join the 750,000 listeners of the Sawbones Podcast as Dr Sydnee McElroy and her husband Justin humorously discuss centuries of medical myths, mishaps and mayhem, including modern day medicine and pandemics.
Newly revised and updated for 2020, this new Paperback edition of the bestselling Sawbones Book gives you a fascinating, horrifying, funny and memorable tour through centuries of medical experimentation and practice (and sometimes malpractice). Learn about trepanation, the COVID-19 pandemic, Norovirus, Chickenpox, Diabetes, and more, all inspired by Sawbones 300+ podcast episodes.
Wondering whether eating powdered mummies might be just the thing to cure your ills? Tempted by those vintage ads suggesting you wear radioactive underpants for virility? Ever considered drilling a hole in your head to deal with those pesky headaches? Probably not! But for thousands of years, people have done things like this—and things that make radioactive underpants seem downright sensible! In their hit podcast, Sawbones, Sydnee and Justin McElroy breakdown the weird and wonderful way we got to modern healthcare . . . and some of the terrifying detours along the way.
Every week, Dr. Sydnee McElroy and her husband Justin amaze, amuse, and gross out (depending on the week) hundreds of thousands of avid listeners to their podcast, Sawbones. Consistently rated a top podcast on iTunes, with over 15 million total downloads, this rollicking journey through thousands of years of medical mishaps and miracles is not only hilarious but downright educational. While you may never even consider applying boiled weasel to your forehead (once the height of sophistication when it came to headache cures), you will almost certainly face some questionable medical advice in your everyday life (we’re looking at you, raw water!) and be better able to figure out if this is a miracle cure (it’s not) or a scam.

Title: A bonkers, delightful hands-in-the-air, joyride through medical history
Review: The Sawbones Book is an absolute gem! Right off the bat, the page layout is very pleasing to the eye. The art is astoundingly beautiful and dynamic throughout the entirety of the novel (EXCELLENT work, Teylor Smirl!). I love the occasional Justin and Sydnee interjections into the narrative, as well as the Justin vs Sydnee blurbs. While already an extremely entertaining and educational read, the addition of fun snippets such as a Cholera contraction step-by-step guide, fun medical facts, Q&As, Halls of Fame, Bad Medicines, etc really kick things up a notch (bam!). I'm delighted that so many great ideas worked together to enhance and advance the storyline. My only criticism would be minor editing hiccups. A few of the Justin/Sydnee blurbs would've made more sense if they were in a different placement, there was a spelling typo (unless Justin was having fun with words and plemty is his cute way of saying plenty? I like it, I'll roll with plemty!), and I believe the artwork for parts 1 & 5 were switched. That being said, minor editing errors in no way detracted from the content, which was wonderful! I'm happy to have The Sawbones Book on my nightside table and to share fun medical facts with my son, who's loved "germ books" since he was 4. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys medical trivia, humor, a good read, and/or telling people, "did you know?!". You're in for a treat!

Title: A good, good book
Review: I've been a fan of the Sawbones podcast for a long time, and so buying the book only made sense. It does not disappoint. It's funny while still being very informative. The illustrations are great. The book itself is really cute and great quality. Makes a perfect coffee table book.

Title: Bizarre and fun!
Review: Funny, informative, and entertaining! Makes a great gift for the history/oddity/medical science nerd. I'm a long time listener of the Sawbones podcast. Couldn't be more happy with the novelization! This paperback edition has a few grammatical errors but it does nothing to bring down the overall value of the comedy/knowledge.

Review: I have been listening to this podcast for 7 years now, and I absolutely love it! Now that I have this book, it is so nice to have a physical copy for my friends who are not into listening to podcasts. I also love the added pandemic section - very interesting and topical.

Review: It isn't edited very well... Lots of grammar and spelling mistakes which is just annoying and feels sloppy. Feels like it was thrown together so they could sell a "new edition". It's an okay book, information wise I guess ... Meh. It's okay toilet book.
