How the Best Did It is an accessible and insightful explanation of how the most important leadership traits from America’s eight greatest presidents can be implemented by today’s leaders.
“A discerning examination of what all of us can learn from some of our most effective leaders who have held—and wielded—ultimate power at the highest level.” —Jon Meacham
David O. Stewart (author of George Washington: The Political Rise of America’s Founding Father) on the George Washington chapter:
“In How the Best Did It, Talmage Boston demonstrates rare gifts in sifting gold nuggets from the endless gravel beds of known facts about eight leading presidents, then delivering them concisely and persuasively. In his insightful study of George Washington, he finds the core of America’s first great leader without exaggerating his talents, and makes him someone from whom we can learn and cherish.”
Annette Gordon-Reed (Pulitzer-winning historian and coauthor of Most Blessed of the Patriarchs: Thomas Jefferson and the Empire of the Imagination) on the Thomas Jefferson chapter:
“Thomas Jefferson was one the most effective American leaders of his time, creating a political party that dominated American politics for more than a quarter of a century. With great insight and clear writing, Talmage Boston brings Jefferson to life as the talented leader who shaped the course of early American society.”
Ronald C. White Jr. (author of A. Lincoln and three other notable books on Lincoln) on the Abraham Lincoln chapter:
“Talmage Boston offers a wise and wide-ranging understanding of Lincoln’s leadership qualities. What makes Boston’s chapter distinct is the personal questions that challenge the reader to apply Lincoln’s values to their lives today.”

Title: Prepare to be amazed and surprised by these great Presidentsâ and their leadership traits and flaws
Review: While reading How the Best Did It, I thought several times that Talmage really enjoyed writing it. At the end of the book, Talmage verified that he thoroughly enjoyed writing it.Talmageâs collection of leadership qualities and flaws found in top United States Presidents is backed up by his tremendous research and input from top historians. The book is a treasure trove of historical facts, many of which have escaped our attention. It's a testament to Talmage's dedication to unearthing and sharing these valuable nuggets of history. It was a delight to read and learn from, and a personal takeaway is that this experiment in democracy called the United States of America is not over, and another great leader is sure to rise -Â hopefully soon.

Title: A necessary read
Review: In an age of rapid communication and immediate world changing events, it is important to have a grounding of some of the most influential minds in history. A look at the decision making processes of some of our most enduringly popular Presidents is a key to that. Talmage Bostonâs latest book provides a valuable tool in that effort. As an example, the re-assessment of Dwight Eisenhowerâs approach to governing. It takes multiple decades for political rhetoric to be pushed aside and a clear picture of success and failures to be seen ⦠and the record to be accurately reflected. This book aces that approach. We never really know the people who are the subjects of such books but we can get a sense of them through the eyes of authors like Talmage Boston in books like this. Highly recommend.

Title: A Master Class in Presidential Leadership
Review: Boston gives a master class in presidential leadership. More than just a great history lesson, it also provides practical tips we can apply in our own lives. Boston not only teaches by presenting the best traits of the best eight, he also teaches by candidly revealing each of their flaws. It's a fascinating read. Each chapter ends with a handy checklist to help us become better leaders. This book helps me do a better job as managing partner of a law firm. It can help anyone improve, no matter what role you play in life.

Title: Analysis of material
Review: When reading historical analysis I always remember that always based somewhat on opinion and perhaps bias to some extent. That said, it is extensively referenced. I particularly liked that the author presented good and negative aspects of the reviewed Presidents. I gave it a quick read to give myself an overview of the major points. I will now wait a few weeks to reread and slowly digest the material and follow-up on references as I work through and think about the contents and how it applies to our current political players and policies. I recommend this book to those who want to understand our history and perhaps help improve their own approach to life.

Title: Presidential leadership lessons we can all use
Review: Talmage Boston is a lifelong student of American history, who has conducted public interviews with many of our finest Presidential historians. His previous book â Cross-Examining History â includes the transcripts of dozens of these public interviews, both among historians and among such important public figures as Henry Kissinger, John Sununu, and James Baker. In his new book, How the Best Did It, Boston reflects on the characteristics that made some of our greatest Presidents so successful. He covers most of the Presidents who routinely appear on Top Ten lists, and focuses on the two or three traits and behaviors that helped each of these Presidents to get through some challenging times. It is important to note that this is not an academic study. Bostonâs intent is to distill examples from our greatest Presidents into leadership lessons that can be applied by most of us, in business, professional work, non-profit management, government, volunteer activity, or academia. If you are a fan of American Presidents, or if you would like to become a better leader, this book is worth a look.
