Title: Effective and easy to use
Review: Very easy to use. Bait cup for peanut butter or other attractant. Easy and safe to set with less potential for injury. Placed two in crawl space under the house after hearing noise in the walls that sounded like animals in the wall. Next day found a dead rat in each trap. Design makes it easy to remove dead rat from trap and to re-arm trap for next rat.

Title: It works, and it's easy to get rid of the dead rat without touching it.
Review: I've tried different catch & release traps, but the rats living in my attic were way too smart to trigger them. I checked into ultrasonic rodent repelling systems, but none of them have been scientifically proven to work. I didn't want to kill them (I used to have rats as pets), but they had to go. Poison is out because the rat goes somewhere else to die, and may rot and attract insects and generate decay odors. Glue traps were out because they are unimaginably cruel to the animal, forcing a slow and miserable death by dehydration and starvation. So, a snap trap was the only other solution. The old wood and spring traps have been around for nearly 200 years and are fairly inexpensive, but it is difficult to remove the dead rat without touching it, meaning the trap often gets tossed out with the dead rat. I wanted a snap trap that was easy to use, and easy to reuse. There are lots of bad snap traps, and many mouse traps that are listed as also working for rats, but they don't. Only the Tomcat brand came up in my searches as being universally recommended, so I bought six of them. I've been catching a rat each day since I got them. When the trap is triggered, the jaws come down with great force, and their serrated edges ensure a quick death with minimal suffering. This trap is the real thing. It works well and is very easy to use.One more thing: Be sure to get "natural" peanut butter, the stuff with some separated oil on top that needs to be stirred before each use. I had first tried some national brand homogenized stuff that had so many additives and sugar that the rats actually avoided it. Natural unsalted peanut butter works amazingly well.

Title: Pet safe and effective
Review: This trap fits inside of the Tomcat bait box to make it pet safe. My smaller dogs can’t get to the trap inside the box.Caught a roof rat on the first night I had this out. The trap was effective against the rat and was easy to clear, re-bait and reset for the next one.Overall good trap. I like that they’re reusable and I like that it’s pet safe when inside the bait box.

Title: Mostly great but there's one problem
Review: So these rat traps have a lot of advantages over the regular 180-degree kill-bar type. The angle of the opened 'jaw' shortens the distance and time needed for the trap to snap shut, which means higher catch rate. Plus the teeth really do grab and hold even large rats making it harder for them to get away. The semi-closed construction prevents rats from sneaking up from behind and accidentally tripping the trap without getting caught or using nearby objects to disable the threat (yes, that actually happens). Since there's no kill-bar traveling in an arch, you don't have to worry about it hitting an obstacle and getting deflected before reaching the target. It also seems to make the trap safer for birds, which usually aren't that interested when the bait is somewhat obscured. Also, the trigger mechanism usually isn't sensitive enough for an inquisitive pain-in-the-a*s wren to set it off and get itself killed. Although, sadly there have been exceptions. You can unscrew the bait tray and load it with no risk of clipping your fingers. Arming the trap is super easy, a push down & click type of deal, and emptying it does not require handling a gross, dead rat.On top of that, the large size of the trigger plate means rats may, and indeed sometimes do, get caught by a limb, simply by accidentally stepping on it rather than going for the bait. However, my issue with this trap is the relatively weak spring. The short path of the kill-bar makes it even worse as the lightweight, plastic jaw simply doesn't have enough energy/momentum for a quick, ethical kill.I often use my rat traps alongside two trail cameras to better understand the 'enemy' and learn how it all works in practice. Unfortunately, what I've seen is somewhat disturbing. Sure, most rats end up dead but some take a long time to die. The longest struggle I've recorded lasted about three hours, during which the rat, very much alive, wiggled itself out of the camera's field of view and eventually died several feet away from the trap's original position. On at least two occasions, I found a rat still alive in the trap and had to finish the job myself. Not sure how long they'd been struggling before I showed up because there was no camera to record it at the time.To people asking about this trap ability to catch and kill squirrels... It might catch and eventually kill a small species but an Eastern gray squirrel that happened to wander too close to my trap, got captured by one of my trail cams having been whacked right on the noggin, doing a double backflip, shaking the trap off midair and running away as if nothing ever happened.I think a more powerful spring would really help and make this a nearly perfect rat trap.

Title: Works, k.i.s.s.
Review: My backyard is full of bamboo plants and fruit trees. So I have the privacy of the bamboo and the tropical feel with delicious assortment of fruits to eat. That’s the good news. The bad news is that not do i like it but apparently that is prime time for rats and mice. I’ve been fighting these rats and mice with everything because I do not want to let them turn my oasis that I built into their oasis. So I’ve bought every single mouse trap rat trap poison humane inhumane you name it I’ve tried them all. With mice I’ve noticed almost everything works especially those sticky pads work pretty well because my are not that smart. However with rats; they’re actually pretty smart. And when it comes to smart things I’ve noticed you have to KISS. Keep it simple. These traps are very simple basic and most importantly effective. Of everything I’ve tried these are the only things that have consistently worked and not only are they the less expensive of the options that I’ve purchased but the reusable and Have me sold. So from someone that hates rats that’s tried everything I highly recommend this product and I’m not getting paid or given anything for saying this. Buy several of these, place as instructed and use creamy peanut butter.I wasn’t going to add a dead rat to the picture but I figured that’s probably a little overboard.

Review: I have used snap traps of various types for years with limited success. I have heard that rats can actually eat the bait on some without tripping the mechanism and also know what a trap looks like and actually can trigger the trap without getting caught. I can verify that as absolutely true as I use an infra red wildlife camera to see the routes the rats take and have seen rats "teasing" the trap. having seen the reviews I decided to try the Tomcat trap.In the first 3 nights I caught 4 rats. Unbelievably two rats were killed at the same time. Since then it has proved effective with more kills. I like the removeable bait holder as it can be cleaned easily and recharged. Also I think the matt plastic and more shell like construction makes it less conspicuous. Whatever it is proving to be a great product and worth spending that bit more on. Peanut butter is also the best bait I've used so far. I was told Nutella is good but that never worked very well. I tend to smear some peanut butter on things in the area of the trap which seems to also help entice the rats onto the trap. Thoroughly recommended !

Review: I live in a semi-rural area and have a problem with rats getting in the roof (and gnawing on electrical wiring) and under the house. Hitherto I've used bait stations, which certainly kills the rats, but they die in the roof or in the sub-floor and create a stink for a couple of weeks. After reviewing a couple of cheaper and similar design traps I settled on Tomcat — and they work a treat. I caught this specimen on the second night, adjacent to a hole where they were getting under the house.I'm happy to recommend Tomcat Rat Snap traps — a quality product that works.

Review: Very powerful trap, snaps necks and kills quickly. Although less so if they get their legs caught, then you have to fetch the spade.
