Inspired by the incredible true story of one Jewish family separated at the start of World War II, determined to survive—and to reunite—We Were the Lucky Ones is a tribute to the triumph of hope and love against all odds.
“Love in the face of global adversity? It couldn't be more timely.” —Glamour
It is the spring of 1939 and three generations of the Kurc family are doing their best to live normal lives, even as the shadow of war grows closer. The talk around the family Seder table is of new babies and budding romance, not of the increasing hardships threatening Jews in their hometown of Radom, Poland. But soon the horrors overtaking Europe will become inescapable and the Kurcs will be flung to the far corners of the world, each desperately trying to navigate his or her own path to safety.
As one sibling is forced into exile, another attempts to flee the continent, while others struggle to escape certain death, either by working grueling hours on empty stomachs in the factories of the ghetto or by hiding as gentiles in plain sight. Driven by an unwavering will to survive and by the fear that they may never see one another again, the Kurcs must rely on hope, ingenuity, and inner strength to persevere.
An extraordinary, propulsive novel, We Were the Lucky Ones demonstrates how in the face of the twentieth century’s darkest moment, the human spirit can endure and even thrive.

Title: I found myself laughing and crying
Review: âWe Were the Lucky Ones" by Georgia Hunter is an incredible true story centered around the author's Jewish family during WW2. I found myself laughing and crying alongside the characters as they faced unimaginable challenges. Their resilience in the face of evil is truly inspiring. The story follows five siblings, their parents, and their harrowing experiences during the Holocaust, shedding light on both the darkness of humanity and the beauty of the human spirit. It's a testament to the courage and determination people can display in the most dire circumstances. Despite enduring unimaginable hardships, this family's love and determination kept them alive. I'm in awe of this book and would wholeheartedly recommend it. 10/10 ð

Title: Must read!!
Review: My mom told me about this show on Hulu, so naturally when I heard it was a book I opted to read first before watching the show. This was such a beautiful and well written book, I feel Georgia did an amazing job telling her families story. I appreciated that the author was upfront about some aspects not fully being told to her, so she had creative liberty, but this came out so beautiful. The love and support this family had/has for each other is unwavering. I wanted to know everything about all the characters and those who came after them. With so many deaths during the holocaust, itâs truly lucky they all survived. This family, every member, persevered through the tough times, what they went through is truly heartbreaking. Itâs so amazing to see the direct descendants of Sol and Nechuma, their family tree growing again.

Title: wonderful book
Review: A tragic story beautifully written. I had a hard time putting it down. It always amazes me how resourceful and strong people can be in such dire circumstances. Not only the drive to survive, but to thrive, live fuller, and love stronger after so much persecution. God bless the Jewish people.

Title: History with a twist.
Review: This family history stands the meme of Jewish abject surrender to atrocities too horrifying to understand on itâs head. A close knit well educated family was ripped apart and each family member survived in very different ways depending on the circumstances they so unjustly found themselves. All were quick witted courageous and generous. This family is a testament to human nature at itâs best. Thanks to the author for sharing this beautiful and harrowing story.

Title: Miraculous! (*possible spoilers*)
Review: Maybe I wasnât paying enough attention up front, but when I embarked upon this book I was expecting to read a story that would have fallen into the genre of âhistorical fiction,â i.e. a fictional account of a fictional family told against the backdrop of the all-too-real canvas of World War II. What I got instead was the astounding, near unbelievable, TRUE account of a Polish-Jewish familyâs miraculous survival during this darkest time in human history. It is not until the epilogue/âAuthorâs Noteâ that we learn that the authorâs Grandfather was in fact one of the main characters in her remarkable story. The author acknowledges that her family elders, quite understandably so, were not eager to discuss the horrors of their past. Given the sparsity of details that were handed down to her, I imagine that a good amount of this epic tale can be chalked up to poetic license, so to speak, and that the writing of this tome entailed a good deal of âfleshing outâ of a very skeletal handed-down (and oftentimes not first-hand) account. Nevertheless, the essence of this tale is true, and nothing short of miraculous, awe-inspiring and, indeed, life-affirming.The protagonists here are Sol and Nechuma Kurc, their five young-adult children and their respective spouses. The story unfolds all over the far-flung corners of the globe during and after the Second World War: Poland, France, Siberia, Palestine, Argentina and, lastly, the United States. (Keeping track of the many main characters may have been a bit unwieldy, but the author handily provides a family tree at the bookâs beginning, which I found myself consulting time after time.)The aspects of this story that moved me most deeply were:First, one cannot read this book without being struck by the perseverance and determination of the family members to provide for one another and simply to survive at the most elemental level during times of starvation, extreme weather, persecution and all the other privations of war-torn Europe. To say that We Were the Lucky Ones is a testament to the human spirit is to state the obvious.Second, the love this family held for one another and the cohesiveness of the family unit â especially when all else was lost â was something that really touched me. There is a not-so-very subtle message here about what matters most in life. The instances of self-sacrifice (Halina for her parents and Mila for her daughter, to name just a couple) are particularly noteworthy.Third, the family, having immigrated to the Unites States immediately post-war, made the utmost of their lives here, all going on to become successful in their chosen spheres. It strikes me that, as clichéd as it may sound, America is truly the land of opportunity for those who are willing to make it happen. As an American whose own Grandparents came here from Europe, I have to say that the authorâs choice to bring this out brought a lump to my throat.I donât know if itâs even possible to describe a Holocaust story as having a happy ending, but if it is at all possible â considering the devastating losses to the world and to humanity at large - this familyâs story had one. In fact, the book lightly touches upon the concept of survivorâs guilt: Toward the end of the book one of the characters muses about how none of them should have survived, and yet (against the odds) all of them did. They were the lucky onesâ¦.A word about the unspeakably brave souls who harbored the hunted: people like Halinaâs boss who was willing to vouch for her (on more than one occasion), or like the peasant family who hid Sol and Nachuma behind a false wall in their home, or the Mother Superior who ran an orphanage and who was willing to accept the falsehood that little Felicia was âAryanâ in order to spare her life. To paraphrase a sentiment of Anne Frankâs: despite everything, there truly are good people in this world. In a world gone mad, these courageous individuals are true heroes. The sanctity of life and the belief that life is something worth fighting for are not new concepts to Holocaust literature. This book ranks right up there with the best in the lessons it has to impart. All in all, edge-of-your-seat story-telling, with an extremely poignant ending. Definitely recommended.

Title: A great but heart wrenching read! Youâll go thru all the emotions!
Review: At first I didnât think Iâd ever make it through. Read a chapter here and there. But as the story progressed I had a hard time putting it down. Having visited the national holocaust museum in DC unfortunately made this book seem all the more realistic to me. But it is worth reading and experiencing the emotional highs and lows alongside with the family.

Review: i must admit that at first i had to put the book aside for a few days. After the first chapters the only thing i could think was "this is going to get bad, really bad!". That terrrible feeling, that twitch in my stomach every time i picked it up almost made me give up, but then my curiosity took the upper hand and i finished it after 3 very intense days, phew! My friendly advice: take a deep breath and dive right in. It's scary, sad, overwhelming, revolting, incredibly fascinating - all at once. May we learn from it and never ever allow for anything even remotely similar to happen again.
