Welcome to Junior's! is a nostalgic tour of Brooklyn from the 1930s to the 1990s with reminiscences and recipes from the legendary restaurant renowned for its rich and creamy cheesecake. Junior's holds a special place in Brooklyn, also home of the Brooklyn Dodgers, Coney Island, and the Brooklyn Bridge. As well as a decade-by-decade history of the golden age of Brooklyn with wonderful photographs from the past fifty years, scattered throughout are memories and stories of how Junior's grew from its modest beginnings to its success today.

From the very first day Junior's opened its doors in 1950 on the corner of DeKalb and Flatbush Avenue Extension in downtown Brooklyn, three generations of the Rosen family have worked hand in hand to build their restaurant into one of the most popular eateries in the borough today. First Harry Rosen, then his sons, Marvin and Walter, and now his grandsons, Kevin and Alan, have worked tirelessly to create and continue a famous Brooklyn neighborhood tradition -- a family restaurant that commands loyalty from its customers, and one to which they return day after day.

Going to junior's is an event. It is a place that has become a home-away-from-home for Brooklynites over the years and is a popular destination for people from the entire New York metropolitan area. Today, just as on the day it opened, Junior's remains a quintessential Brooklyn phenomenon. It even looks remarkably like it did in the fifties -- bright orange booths that seat nearly four hundred, a glistening counter surrounded with diners, a busy soda fountain, and, of course, the bakery, brimming with all kinds of cheesecakes, homemade pies, towering layer cakes, and buttery pastries. Not only does Junior's stand for the best of ethnic, down-home fare but it also serves the best cheesecake in New York -- at the last count over four million slices each year.

Welcome to Junior's! is not only a memory book to treasure but a cookbook with over one hundred favorite recipes. From Junior's signature cornbread, matzoh ball soup, crisp fried chicken, cheese blintzes, and baked stuffed shrimp to its legendary desserts -- Junior's famous #1 pure cream cheesecake, lemon meringue pie, strawberry shortcake, chocolate fudge layer cake, and ice-cream sundaes -- these recipes allow you to re-create a small slice of Junior's right in your own home kitchen.

Title: Wonderful, Well-Written Recipes for Tasty Diner Dishes
Review: Like the title says, Welcome to Junior's is not just a cookbook; it's a history book of Brooklyn and Junior's Restaurant. I found it a delightful cookbook and I'm happy to have a copy on my bookshelf. You will not find full color photos of the finished dishes here or gourmet, specialty recipes. You will find wonderful, well-written recipes for tasty diner dishes. I've been lucky enough to eat at the original Junior's in Brooklyn and have enjoyed their cheesecake many times. Junior's Famous No.1 Pure Cream Cheesecake is just as good and made quite the splash at a recent family get-together. I'm eager to try some of the other varieties included like the chocolate swirl or the fresh strawberry. Welcome to Junior's recipe for Challah Bread was fantastic and the Old-Fashioned French Toast I made with it were amazing. Equally delicious were the Hungarian Beef Goulash with Egg Noodles, Mac and Cheese Pie and Chicken Fingers. My only complaint would be that the layout of the book is not intuitive. Desserts are mixed in with mains which are mixed in with soups which are mixed in with sauces. Overall, though I highly recommend Welcome to Junior's.

Title: Good food and memories
Review: Once Brooklyn is in your heart it stays forever and that's true as well of Junior's. I was excited to see this and super excited to get it. The day I got it I rushed out to buy the ingredients to make the cheesecake and meatloaf and my family was so happy that I did. It was like going home. This is true comfort food, food that tastes great and makes you feel warm and safe. This is the food of America, the American of immigrants and diverse cultures. Yes there are an amazing number of deserts and all of them simple and easy to make, but it's not desert itself that is making America fat it's junk food and fast food. Junior’s recipes may call for sugar but in amounts that won't kill you or make you fat. No you can't eat cheesecake every day and not gain weight but that's true of most things. By going back to food like this and by cooking at home you'll be doing so much for your family and they'll love you for it.

Title: Read it for Fun, Read it for Recipes
Review: I've never been to Brooklyn and was unfamiliar with Junior's until I bought this book through Amazon.First, I'd like to complement the designer of the book. It's colorful, well organized and fun to read! Too often, cookbooks designed with 'style' become either hard to read or hard to find recipes within. This book has balance.I didn't buy this book to cook from, I was more interested in the history of the restaurant. The story, beginning with Enduro in the pre-war years, is beautifully written and a joy to read. I've passed it around to several friends who enjoyed it as much as I have.I've tried a number of the recipes and they are good, though not truly exceptional. I didn't find this surprising, as often restaurant recipes don't translate well to home cooking. Also, we can't discount the value of restaurant atmosphere. I'm certain an institution like Junior's can enhance a simple glass of milk with atmosphere! And, no, the cheesecake recipe given in the book didn't impress me. I read in another review that this isn't the same as the one at the restaurant and I can believe that. It simply isn't anything special.Regardless, this is a fun book, full of nostalgic good feelings, and I'm glad I bought it. Certainly, should I get up to Brooklyn, this restaurant will be one of my first stops!

Title: Love, Love, Love this book!
Review: I grew up in Brooklyn and have found a few good cheesecake recipes in the many years I've been gone but none can compare with the cake foundation instead of crushed cookies. The cheesecake does not get soggy after the first day! My husband received a birthday cheesecake from Junior's, it was so good I had to get the book. The book does not disappoint, has a great variety of recipes and wonderful memories of growing up in New York City.

Title: One of my go-to cookbooks
Review: From pot roast to meatballs to cheesecake, this cookbook delivers good home-cooking food diner-style. You won't find one bad recipe in this book --however you may want to consider using low-fat/non-fat ingredients if you don't want the load of calories and fat otherwise typical of this sort of food. I have made these ingredient changes and the output is still remarkably good! You know you have good recipes when you can make healthy ingredient changes and the output is still getting raves!

Title: Memories of My Father`s Brooklyn
Review: This is my second copy, and my kids each want one too. It is not just the recipes it is all the Brooklyn information, My father who just recently died grew up there, and so to have been able to share this book with him and ask him about different things in the book.....when I lost my copy, I had to get it replaced and was happy to find one here. I love to cook, and have tried a few of the recipes and they are good too....but the memories of Brooklyn are the major selling point to me. I grew up in Miami, Florida, and we too had Juniors, and I remember and cherish all my memories of eating there often with my Dad.

Title: If you're looking for a cheesecake recipe, look no further!
Review: This is the best cheesecake anywhere - my dad is in the picture with Bob Lape as he was the Master-Baker at the time this cheesecake became famous! He's the short one in the picture! The book is filled with stories of early Brooklyn, NY and so many wonderful recipes! I have fond memories of sitting at the counter waiting for Pop to get off work.

Review: I love how this book shows the different menu's of Juniors throughout the years. A really interesting way of cooking. You could have a 1940's night! Also interesting to see how tastes change and different kinds of foods fade away just as fast as they become a fad. There are many timeless recipes here. Good buy.
