Beyond the Monuments in Washington DC is your guide to some of the US capital’s cool places to visit that extend way beyond power and politics.
Travel writer Kate Armstrong covers all of the new hip locales, including H Street Corridor, 14th Street and Union Market District, and the hangouts of historic Georgetown and Dupont Circle. She offers a local’s take on where to go for great coffee, crafty cocktails, DC-centric shopping and superlative sights (these include the freebie 'must dos' around the Mall, such as the National Museum of the African American History and Culture and the Library of Congress). There are fun, themed walking itineraries for U Street, old town Alexandria, and gardens and homes of Georgetown, plus three accessible daytrips to Mount Vernon, Richmond, and Gettysburg.
There's so much to see and do in this under-rated city, and this book in the Curious Travel Guides series will add polish to your visit.

Title: Perfect for both residents and DC residents!
Review: Bought one for myself, but soon realized itâs also the perfect gift for both visitors and residents, including returning residents. So have bought a few copies already. Absolutely love all the traditional and more quirky discoveries!

Title: This guide is near perfect
Review: Just spent 3 days in Washington DC and this guide was fantastic in helping us maximise how much we could see and do in not a lot of time. Her suggested tour on the mall including lunch and dinner spots was perfect. Some great bars and restaurants. As an English teacher, I loved Planet Word which we otherwise wouldnât have known about. National Archives Museum too. Continued on to Richmond where we dined in her suggested restaurant - oh wow! A culinary highlight for sure. Only minor criticism is she didnât mention you can do a private guide-led tour in Gettysburg which is really worthwhile.

Title: An essential companion guide for any trip to Washington DC
Review: This is unlike any standard guidebook as it takes you into the neighborhoods and secondary highlights of Washington DC. The layout is impressive, photos are divine and the list of destinations is inspiring. If you are wanting to get the most out of your trip to the nation's capital, I would highly recommend this guide to ensure you get off the beaten path and discover many of the hidden gems in this great city. Our trip to Washington DC would not have been the same without it. Buy a copy for yourself and consider it as a gift for others intending to travel to DC in the future. Highly recommended.
