Los Angeles might be the capital of conspicuous consumption, but the other cliché about “La La Land”—that it’s a cultural wasteland—couldn’t be further from the truth. For every “Extreme Makeover—Club Edition” (in which would-be impresarios continually swankify their establishments in a relentless quest to be “the” hot spot du jour), there is a well-worn drinking hole full of history, serving up a far more elusive and seductive mix of stiff drinks, loose atmosphere and keep-it-real regulars.

In Los Angeles’ Best Dive Bars, you’ll get the scoop and the poop on the city’s liveliest, lowlife n’ liquor-soaked landmarks. This essential booze bible has the lowdown on which bars serve free food, which have great—and not so great—karaoke, bars that appear in your favorite movies and much, much more. Whether you’re looking for a friendly spot where “everybody knows your name,” a filthy blackened cave where nobody ever will, a gently-gentrified hole specked with dive-obsessed hipsters or a dusty relic full of hip-replacements, you’re sure to find a spot to soak up—and get soaked in—here in these pages.

LINA LECARO is the nightlife columnist for the LA Weekly. She has been patrolling Los Angeles’ most decadent after dark dens and its grungiest grottos with equal aplomb for over twenty years (i.e. before she could actually drink legally). A born and bred Angeleno, she’s no angel when it comes to digging deep into LA’s most harrowing drunkard-approved hovels . She might prefer her cocktails sweet, but her favorite bars (and barflys) have always been anything but.

Title: Five Bottles on the Dive O Meter!
Review: Let's say you just can't do another night at an overpriced, over-hyped Hollywood hot spot, and you need a low-key, low-rent, (maybe even sleazy) alternative, perhaps a bit closer to home. Or let's say you've been eyeing the neighborhood joint wondering whether it's a mellow night of cheap drinks or a scuzzy and possibly dangerous mistake. Grab a copy of this tour of greater LA's watering holes (and pits) and check the Dive O Meter! On a scale of 1 to 5, five is the dive-iest of the dives - and the most fun reading. Two of my faves: the write-up on Pogo's in Van Nuys, which comes with a hilarious mini-rant about ladies' room etiquette, and the description of downtown's King Eddy, which makes me want to get my John Fante on.

Title: Useful and informative
Review: Even though the book's 12 years old, it still has fun information about many of LA's historic drinking establishments.

Title: Great book, but their definition of "dive" is a bit odd
Review: OK, for the record, I've been in some real dive bars. Like a place with a sign on the door that said, "No Knives of Any Kind" that, oddly, tolerated nudity at times. That's a dive bar. And several of the places listed in this book are NOT dive bars at all, but merely informal neighborhood places. That said, it's a great book and well worth reading. Possibly more than once. A great field guide to the dive-ish watering holes of greater L.A., but be careful to mind Ms. Lecaro's warnings about some of them.

Title: Great dives
Review: Lina has got to be the bravest woman in LA, just a great treasure chest of dive bars, some well known and some not. All interesting and with stories about them, loved every page.

Title: Welcome to Liquorland!
Review: I really enjoyed this book! Written in a conversational tone, it's like your best pal with all the insider info is giving you the scoop on the nocturnal activity you never knew existed. The author slightly stretches the classic definition of "dive" as many entries are far from scuzzy, but the book benefits from the wider range of watering holes described. Chock full of interesting facts and history along with liberal doses of humor, this little tome can even be appreciated be teetotalers and those who never intend to set foot in Los Angeles.

Title: Dive head-first into this refreshing, alcohol-infested pool!
Review: The pages are literally dripping with booze. You can almost smell the combination of smoke, beer and sweat when thumbing thru this awesome-yet-informative guide to dive-bar trolling. I've been to many of these "establishments", and author Lina Lecaro nailed it (the chick knows LA!). If you think there's no culture in the City of Angels, you haven't been to these places. This is your handbook. You will thank me later...but hate me the next morning.
