Pauline Frommer's highly-personal guide to her own home city has, in previous editions, twice been named "Best Guidebook of the Year" by the North American Travel Journalists Association. It has been the best-selling guide to the city for the last five years. Though she deals with luxury choices as well as bargains, she makes a special effort to overcome New York's reputation for stratospheric prices, ferreting out scores of moderately-priced options in lodgings, meals, attractions, entertainment and more.

Like all Easy Guides, this annually-researched and popular best-seller is "Quick to Read, Light to Carry"—and colorfully written.

Fully updated yearly, and printed in large, easy-to-read type, the book contains:

Handy pull-out map and bulleted maps throughout

Self-guided walking tours

Star ratings that take value into account, and will help you find the right hotels, restaurants, nightspots and shops for you, in all price ranges

Subway information for every listing in the guide, to help you get around quickly and easily

Opinionated advice on what to see and what to skip

Insightful discussions of New York’s history and culture

16-page photo guide with vibrant photographs

Title: A must buy before you go to NYC
Review: I’d been to NYC once before, but didn’t get a chance to explore the city because of work. So, when planning a 4 day girls getaway with friends, I wanted to make sure we didn’t waste time doing boring stuff or end up spending our kid’s college funds on the trip (!!!). There is so much great info in this guide and it's so smartly organized. Items like costs (there’s a really helpful section on whether it makes sense to buy sightseeing passes), quickest ways to get around, where you’ll need reservations (it seemed like almost everywhere), and all kinds of events and nighttime options and shopping recommendations. You can read every word (and there’s a lot of funny, interesting stuff in the book) or just use the chapters and headings to focus in on what’s important (as I said, the books organization is very good). I do regret that I didn't have time to read every word. There's just so much to do and see in New York and since I did skip sections, I worry I may have missed something exciting. I need to go back! The book will make you excited about the city, and also help you decode what to do and see. I think it’s a must buy (and that you’ll get very good use out of it). So glad I bought it before going or we would have faced unexpected costs, and stood on a lot of the lines we avoided, as well as missing out on incredible dining because we wouldn’t have known where to go, or that we needed to make advance reservations, etc. etc.. This guide is really a treasure trove of info, meaning you can dive deep into details or just skim to find what you’re looking for.

Title: The best New York guide
Review: This book has so much good information in it! It is a comprehensive guide of New York that was filled with useful information for everyone in my family. The self-guided walking tours were just as good as taking a tour with a guide, introducing us to really interesting places and history. Those walking tours, and what we saved on hotels and Broadway show tickets, thanks to the advice in the book, more than made up for the cost of the guide.I found planning this trip initially quite daunting using the internet, and other books I didn’t find any of the types of money-saving tips the book had that way, from which neighborhoods were going to be less expensive for hotels (but still really convenient to everything we wanted to see) to how to get discounts to top shows. So glad we got this book! I’m going to keep it to use on another trip, as we ended up really loving the city (and now want to go on our next vacation, too).I cannot stress how much this guide gets it right.

Title: Authentic and useful!
Review: I like the Frommer’s guides because they’re really discerning in finding the most authentic, interesting restaurants in a destination, they include great sample day plans (key for planning your time) and do a better job explaining the history and culture of the place in question. This guide is no exception (in fact, it may be one of the best guides I’ve ever used). It has just enough detail so I could read it quickly and know what to see and do. It chose AMAZING restaurants. Plus the pull out map was really helpful (as were the maps throughout). Best of all: this book helped me set a budget and stick to it. It has exact prices, unlike the other guidebooks I looked at, and helpful money saving tips that are geared towards travelers who like a bit of luxury and don’t want to cut corners, but also don’t want to overpay.

Title: Great NYC Guide Gives Inside Scoop
Review: This is an awesome guide to NYC that focuses less on the big tourist attractions that everyone already knows about (though they're in there) and more on cool, unique, under-the-radar places. The restaurant and bar suggestions list popular classics and hip, current spots, all with real character. I love that the shopping section focuses mainly on locally owned businesses. A chapter at the beginning called "The Best of the Big Apple" has useful lists of the best buildings, parks, free activities, etc. A collection of suggested itineraries and a breakdown of NYC neighborhoods, and a couple of clearly mapped out walking tours -- one of Harlem and one of historic lower manhattan -- look really enticing. The book covers a lot while being a fast, enjoyable read!

Title: Super helpful for New York City travels
Review: I've been to New York City a couple times and did some touristy things, but until I got this guide, I never realized all the other stuff I've been missing! More importantly, I really appreciate the helpful tips that will save me money on lodging and eating out. My favorite part is the self-guided walking tours through the different neighborhoods, which gives me a lot of confidence for my next trip. This guide really packs a lot of info into a great little book. Highly recommended if you're visiting NYC!!

Title: Some Great Commentary!
Review: I originally gave this as a Christmas present to family members as we prepare for group trip to the City. My sister kept quoting the book to me and insisted I get a copy to read. I've only glanced at it so far but as a frequent traveler to the City, I am look for a current guide every few years. This one now seems to be the one!

Title: Great guide
Review: Bought this for my next trip to NYC. It has good maps and summaries of neighborhoods which help with planning. The author's descriptions and candid assessments are appreciated - and make the narrative enjoyable (don't always find that in travel guides). I've have been to a few of the places mentioned on prior visits and agree with the reviews - would have liked the benefit of this guide then.

Review: Having bought the Washington DC one i was sold on buying the NYC guide. I've been to new york once, but missed lots of place the guide show. It has the touristy places, but also little gems. It's also handy to have walking tours and different restaurant options in different price ranges. The handy tips on where to eat, what to order How to search for good deals on broadway shows are also welcome. All of this was cumbersome for me when first planning through internet on things like free or pay what you like museums and little. As being on my mid twenties i appreciate the complete chapter on nightlife. Also the LGTB scene and recommendations are welcome addition. The only reason I rate it 4 stars is the main focus is Manhattan when the outer boroughs like Brooklyn and Queens are also beautiful they brush past them even when they're beautiful and have great views.Apart from that, It's a MUST buy for a trip to NYC.
