Join New York City’s most intrepid eater—Robert Sietsema, pioneer of outer-boroughs dining—in an urban adventure like none other. Through essays on the city’s defining dishes, some familiar, others obscure, Robert paints a portrait of New York’s food landscape past and present, and shares a life spent uncovering the delicious foods of the five boroughs.
Gobble up a century of New York pizza, from the coal-fired pies of a thriving Little Italy to the slice joints of a burgeoning rock ’n’ roll East Village. Discover Katz’s Delicatessen as Robert did, on a foray into the hardscrabble Lower East Side of the 1970s. Take Robert’s hand and he’ll bring you through the Mexican taquerias of Bushwick—with their papalo leaves and piled-high sandwiches—then visit the underground Senegalese dining scene hidden in plain sight in 1990s Times Square. See the evolution of New York fried chicken from Harlem’s spare, ancient style to the battered-and-brined birds of hipster Brooklyn. Hunt with Robert for Hangtown fry and a vanishing Chinese-American cuisine, and follow him as he ferrets out the city’s most elusive foods, including the Ecuadorian guinea pig.

Title: A great gift for any gourmandizer on your list
Review: Robert Sietsema has been one of the best writers dealing with food for a long time now. His writing is conversational and funny, but it brims with history and details about food and also the ways NYC has changed over the decades he's lived there. Each of the chapters here focuses on a different dish he sees as somehow emblematic of the Five Boroughs, and the lengths he goes to explore his gustatory desires is a sheer pleasure to read. Because each of the chapters is self-contained, this is a great book to read while traveling or on the run, or even while dining alone. Bought extra copies for my kids -- who love food as much as anyone -- and they dug it as well. The recipes that accompany each chapter seem a little pro forma, but Sietsema's best writing has always been about the enjoyment of food more than the creation of it. A great gift for any gourmandizer on your list.

Title: Not what I expected but fun anyway...equal parts memoir, travelogue and yes, food.
Review: I was born and raised in the "New York Metropolitan area" otherwise known as New Jersey. New York to me means food: great pizza, American style Chinese food, pastrami and steaks. Sietsema covers most of these. You learn some history, facts about the author and then get some terrific recipes. 6 out of the 12 main foods I had never heard of or eaten. These mostly are international dishes and you learn about their origins. These were less interesting parts of the book for me, mostly because I had no frame of reference. My favorite chapters were first and last. The pizza discussion well defined what is so good and unique about NY pizza. Just try and find anything close in WI! The final chapter is about the beloved black and white cookie. The fact that the author engages in complex discussions about this cookie made my heart glad. I made the recipe he included and it does indeed turn out a very fine B&W.This is a great book for ex-pats as well as anyone wanting to understand NY food culture. It made for light fun reading.

Title: Disappointed.
Review: This book wasn't what I expected. I was expecting much more from someone who was a food critic for the Village voice for 2 decadesThe 1st chapter - A Baker's Dozen of Pizzas You Must Not Miss with a recipe for New York Style Cheese pizza (but he doesn't provide a recipe for the pizza dough and the sauce isn't my cup of tea.2nd Chapter - 6 places to get Egg Foo Yong (should say Young) I want to point out that 1 of these places is already closed, and with so much delicious American Chinese foods I'm a bit stumped on why he went with Egg Foo Young. He also has a recipe for it, again not so crazy about it. I'm a pretty big fan of Egg Foo Young the gravy wan't right on this.3rd Chapter - Clam Chowder (a personal favorite of mine, probably in the top 5 foods) 6 places to get good clam chowder, there is a New England Clam Chowder and a Manhattan Clam Chowder recipe.. I'm going to have to start asking at this point, where he's getting these recipes from.4th Chapter - Thibou Djenn. 4 places to get Cheb, a seneglalese run french pastry shop, other african cuisines. there's a recipe for Cheb. I've never had Cheb.5th Chapter - Pastrami. 9 Places to eat Pastrami. A recipe for pastrami. I love pastrami, but we just go to our local Jewish deli and eat it there.6th Chapter - Masala Dosa. 8 places to get Dosas. A recipe for Dosa, with a caption stating it takes 3 days to make. I'll have to pass, we have had this and it's not something I enjoy.7th Chapter - Fried Chicken. 6 places to get great old fashioned style Fried chicken. 7 places to get Nuevo-foodie style fried chicken. A recipe for fried chicken. Who can pass up on fried chicken?! I think getting excellent fried chicken is rare. There's a ton of places, with very little getting it right. His recipe calls for corn meal, so I passed on making this.8th Chapter - Pambazo. Where to get pambazo. Places to get tortas and jugos. A recipe for pambazo. pass....9th Chapter - BBQ Brisket - 9 great (and almost great) NY city bbq. Texas style beef ribs is the recipe.10 - Cuy. 5 Places to eat Ecuadorian (if not always) Cuy. The recipe is Rabbit in the style of Cuy. I hate rabbit so again, going to pass.11- Pho (Probably my 2nd favorite food, bordering 1st) This and the cookies are probably the shortest chapters. 10 Places to get good (or even great) Pho in NY. 5 places to get good (or even great) Pho in Atlantic City or Pleasantville (I'm lost why he even put that in there) He has a recipe for Pho, but the broth is not the way I like it.12 - Scrambled Brains.6 Places to try brains endorsed bu the organ meat society. Scrambled brain recipe.13- Black and White cookies. 8 places to find black and white cookies. Black and white cookies recipe. I am definitely going to try this.Unless you're a New Yorker or visiting, this book isn't of much use, in my opinion. I was expecting some fabulous recipes and was sadly disappointed. I also thought he'd talk about some of the places he refers you to. He doesn't seem to mention any hidden gems. I love NY. I don't live there, but I think it has so much to offer when it comes to foods. This author didn't**** Update, i threw this in the trash as the recipes are garbage.
