Santa Barbara is a captivating, inviting community that is located in a natural, beautiful setting along California's Pacific coast. The city is located 90 miles north of Los Angeles and 100 miles south of San Luis Obispo The temperate climate and refreshing ocean breezes, very similar to the Mediterranean, have distinguished this area as "the jewel of the American Riviera." The landscape includes mountainous terrain, preserved forests and wilderness areas, and stretches of undeveloped coast, allowing this scenic area to have miles of quiet, secluded hiking trails.
Day Hikes Around Santa Barbara includes 116 day hikes within a 65-mile radius of the city. Most trails are located in natural, undeveloped areas, including 80 miles of coastline, the Santa Ynez Mountains, and the Santa Ynez River Valley. A few trails through urban areas are included as well. A wide range of hikes accommodates amateur to avid hikers, ranging from coastal beach walks to steep canyon climbs. Highlights include oceanside bluffs, beaches, tidepools, wetland preserves, sculpted gorges, rock outcroppings with caves, numerous waterfalls, secluded pools in mossy canyons, mountain ridge trails, historical sites, and stunning overlooks of the Pacific. Straight-forward directions and clear maps accompany every hike.
Companion guides include Day Hikes Around Ventura County, Day Hikes Around San Luis Obispo, and Day Hikes On the California Central Coast.

Title: Easy to read maps
Review: First used this book a few years ago and finally bought one for myself. I love the easy to read maps and detailed descriptions. Obviously some things change over time, but for the most part, it's fairly accurate. I also love how everything is organized in terms of location.I've lived in SB for over 10 years and am an avid hiker/camper. I've discovered so many new hikes and (primitive) campgrounds with this book that I had no idea existed! My boyfriend and I are determined to do as many of these hikes as we can.

Title: DOUBLE check trail directions to trailheads and trail info on ALL TRAILS .
Review: Have been relying on this book for hiking in the area , being that we are visiting for a few weeks .For most part , have found book to be very useful and like the way the hikes are described in âsections â .However , Santa Ynez River Valley section led us completely astray yesterday . Directions to trailhead inaccurate ( same with other hikes in section ) AND road to trailhead has been closed for a few years AND campground described has apparently not been in existence for 20-30 years .So heads up : use the book but double check directions and use ALL Trails app to verify trailinfo .Havenât yet hiked beyond this section so donât know accuracy of info regarding more distant trails from SB .

Title: 4 editions and the Location so Deserves it.
Review: I donât think most people realize how rare four editions are in a hiking guide. Nor how hard it is to keep a hiking book up to date over more than a decade, especially in an area like Santa Barbara where land use regulations, property rights and floods can change Trail routes in a heartbeat. But here we are with the fourth edition of my favorite among Robert Stoneâs many hiking guides to the California Coast.I love this book first and foremost because I love the Santa Barbara region. If any place epitomizes Mediterranean climate in California this is it. Lots of great beach and bluff walks, hikes along the steep but not very high mountains abutting the Santa Barbara coast, and the many trails in the Okami area and Sespe wilderness cry out for spring and early summer exploration.Iâve walked a little over half the trails in this book, and after reading the new edition am already plotting a couple of short weekend backpack trips to Santa Barbara this May. But should you get the book if you have one of the earlier editions? The answer is a qualified yes. Enough routes have changed (and the author has added three new hikes) that the new edition is worth it. But if you like casual strolls along beaches and bluffs to see wildlife (seals, monarch butterflies, and more) then many of the short classic hikes have remained unchanged. Itâs a tribute to the communities around Santa Barbara that they have maintained such incredible trails in a landscape where rapid change is the norm. And everyone, not just locals, will be richly rewarded by exploring the trails in this book.
