Title: Sweet!! and hooking directly to Verizon FioS!
Review: Review has two parts - one about the router itself, the other about hooking up this router directly to Verizon FioS instead of using their router.I used to have a DLink router about 3 years ago but stopped using it when I signed on the AT&T Uverse where I was "required" to use their supplied router. The UVerse router was a piece of j**k, limited to 100 Mpbs and wireless G with poor signal strength. It worked okay but provided limited to no control on traffic, parental controls, limiting children's computers to certain times of the day, etc.The RT-AC68U is a beautiful beast compared to those earlier routers, blazing fast, strong signals, and a ton of advanced features that would meet the needs of most home and small business users. Earlier I would get some gibberish names of connected clients, like BRN564332 and especially with PCs, laptops, phones, tablets, rokus connected, I couldn't tell easily which was which - the Asus shows the mac id and if you click on it, it shows the manufacturer of that device and then allows you to name it to enable easy identification later. The network map shows you connected clients, wired and wireless, as well as the strength of the wireless connection. Setting up QoS is easy and highly configurable. Parental controls are simple and very powerful - I can limit the time of the day, by week and weekend, that the kid's Roku can connect to the internet and use the Network Services filter to disable gaming ports by time of day, by week and weekend. (yeah, you need to identify the ports that gaming uses but you can look it up on the internet by game name or the logs in the router show it as well).Have not used the VPN features. Tried the USB download master but I prefer the download and cloud features on my Synology DS213j NAS. The LED lights, even when on, are fairly non-intrusive. The unit looks solidly built. This is my second Asus product, the first being a Windows 8 ultranote book and they appear to be making quality high performance products. Some helpful hints on connecting to Verizon FioS with this router without buying or renting their router. Note this will work only for internet only services - if you subscribe to their TV services, you MUST use their router (but can set up the Asus behind or in front of their router using DMZ feature). When you are ordering FioS online, select "will buy my own Verizon router" and complete the order. Verizon's network terminal, called a ONT, (usually outside the house) has two Ethernet ports, one coax and the other Ethernet. By default, only the coax is activated as they usually run coax to their routers. The Asus router (and most retail routers) do not have a coax port. You must ask Verizon to activate the Ethernet port on the ONT (over the phone with the technical support, initial customer support will insist that you have to have a Verizon router, that is not true) and run (either yourself, if you chose self-install, or have the Verizon install person do it) Ethernet cable from the ONT to your Asus router. Ensure you have Cat5e or Cat 6 cable - they can support Gigabit Ethernet. Ensure you have the same cat cables from the router to your hard wired PCs - I used an older cable and could not get more than 10 Mbps for a whole frustrating week - till I simply switched to cat6 cable and boom!- I was up to 1 Gbps.

Title: New firmware resolves QoS issues and Adds Support ATT Unite Pro Mifi as a WAN Modem
Review: Updated Review: 12/8/2015I recently learned that ASUS had release new firmware with a new QoS mode for Bandwidth Limiting. This works exactly as I need so I can manage bandwidth for streaming devices such as my media center, but still have high throughput for my work downloads. This provides me with the right bandwidth for each machine and lets me properly manage my cellular bandwidth cap.I also discovered through Amazon comments that they have added support for the ATT Unite Pro Mifis as USB Modems to this router (from user Directed Energy commenting on the ATT Unite Pro) . Thus I no longer need a Wi-Fi to Ethernet adapter between the Unite and the routers Ethernet WAN port. So one less Wi-Fi network to deal with and a slightly better ping time. To do this it was a simple change, connect the Unite Pro to the USB 2 port, change the WAN Type to USB, the Location to USA and the APN to Auto. At this point it just worked. So I’m super happy with these changes and subsequently raising my review from 3 to 5 stars. The ASUS firmware now has the features I need and is more stable and performant than the DD-WRT builds I was being forced to run before to get QoS to work properly. I’m a little disappointed that it didn’t work out of the box and took 9 – 12 months to get resolved, but it is working now. Also as a plus the new unified ASUS firmware across router models is quite nice making for a much smoother experience across models if you use these at multiple locations and or configure them for friends and family. This Router is much faster than my older RT-N56U both on the LAN and the WAN side. The range is also better and further improved by having external antennas that could be replaced with high gain antennas. However, with the latest firmware as of 12/15/2014 the QoS functionality does not work. It in no way limits the download stream and while upstream transfers are limited they are not held to the specified values. I tried a number of different settings in this area and nothing would limit the download stream. Tried to open a case with ASUS and the web form errored out on submit four times with multiple browsers. Ended up having a chat with a technician that insisted I factory reset the router again, albeit with a different set of steps (event though there are several threads on the internet about others having this issue, so most likely firmware). I did this only to realize that I was provided the instructions for a different router as the reset button pattern provided does not factory reset the router. After finding the proper steps, still no change. Frustrated with the run around with ASUS support I ended up reflashing the router with DD-WRT, based on public threads for others having this issue. Once I got it flashed, reset the settings and reconfigured QoS was working like a champ and limiting bandwidth as configured. The QoS feature is very important for me as my broadband connection is an ATT Unite Mifi which is metered, so slowing down video streaming is important as is maintaining enough bandwidth for work VOIP calls.Overall I am extremely pleased with the router's hardware, disappointed with the firmware, and frustrated near the point of anger with ASUS support, who I don't think queried the support DB for known firmware issues even though I specifically asked for this several times and referenced other people having this issue. So if you don't need QoS or are comfortable flashing custom firmware from DD-WRT I would say go for this router it is very fast on both wireless bands and has great range.

Review: Randomly quit working for no reason I can see. Tried setting it back up multiple times and would not work. Asus makes the set up extremely easy, and I've done it multiple times. The only reason I go with Asus. And of course my return window is closed. Don't buy ANY of the used ones as they have likely had the same problem.

Review: I wish the reach was higher, but that could be my fault due to placement inside a small room where it doesn't allow the signal to travel well
