Not all sheepskins are "washable". Not all tanning is suitable for washing, especially vegetable tanned sheepskins may not be water tolerant. That's the way they were made. Not sure? Test a corner of the leather by wetting with plain water. If the leather gets crispy hard from water, you shouldn't soak it or use any kind of washing soap. Crispy, hard, shrunken leather is a function of the tanning process not being water tolerant.
Dyed sheepskins might not suitable for soaking and washing, the color could run. Test a corner in water.
What if it's really dirty? It's important to brush a sheepskin thoroughly before washing. The more dirt and debris you get out before washing, the better the results. Matted and felted fleece naturally holds in dirt. Get the big pieces out first with a brush and shaking. Also, remember to brush out the fibers after it is fully dry. This will fluff up and air out the fleece.
How do I clean a big heavy sheepskin rug? Large rugs like quads could be too big and heavy when wet for a washing machine. Either use a deep sink or bathtub with the proper amount of shampoo according to the instructions on the bottle.
What if my sheepskin is very old? Sheepskins are natural products, old leather may have already lost its natural resilience. Regardless of the shampoo you use, old, deteriorating sheepskins may not hold up to any washing method.
How to Clean a Sheepskin
Step 1
Shake and brush away dust and loose wool. Repeat as necessary until brush is relatively clean of debris.
Step 2
Hand or machine wash in cold or warm water. Squeeze the sheepskin between your hands. Do not stretch or wring the leather.
Use gentle spin cycle in machine to remove water.
Step 3
Air dry away from direct heat or sunlight. Either hang on a line or lie flat on a table. The leather side dries slower. Gently stretch the edges to bring the hide back to shape.
Step 4
Give a final brushing to separate the cleaned and dry fibers. Shake and fluff as needed.

Review: I bought both the cleaner and the brush. The sheepskin isn't placed on the floor, i usually just leave it on the sofa, so it wasn't that dirty to begin with, but the fur was all matted. Just using the brush restored the sheepskin to fluffy soft, like clouds. Overall, I'm really happy to have purchased the set.
