Hell with the Lid Off looks at the ferocious five-year war waged by Pittsburgh and Oakland for NFL supremacy during the turbulent seventies. The roots of their rivalry dated back to the 1972 playoff game in Pittsburgh that ended with the “Immaculate Reception,” Franco Harris’s stunning touchdown that led the Steelers to a win over the Raiders in their first postseason meeting. That famous game ignited a fiery rivalry for NFL supremacy. Between 1972 and 1977, the Steelers and the Raiders—between them boasting an incredible twenty-six Pro Football Hall of Famers—collided in the playoffs five straight seasons and in the AFC title game three consecutive years.

Both teams favored force over finesse and had players whose forte was intimidation. Pittsburgh’s Steel Curtain defense featured Mean Joe Greene, Jack Lambert, Jack Ham, and Mel Blount, the latter’s heavy hits forcing an NFL rule in his name. The Raiders countered with “The Assassin,” Jack Tatum, Skip Thomas (aka “Dr. Death”), George Atkinson, and Willie Brown in their memorable secondary. Each of their championships crowned the eventual Super Bowl winner, and their bloodcurdling encounters became so violent and vicious that they transcended the NFL and had to be settled in a U.S. district court.

With its account of classic games, legendary owners, coaches, and players with larger-than-life personalities, Hell with the Lid Off is a story of turbulent football and one of the game’s best-known rivalries.

Title: Very Interesting Book but Written in a Flawed Way
Review: I have been a huge Raiders fan since the 60's. The period of time covered in this book corresponds roughly to my high school and college years. I watched in disbelief from my parents' living room when the Immaculate Reception occurred. I was then devastated when the Steelers beat my Raiders in the '74 and '75 AFC Championship Games. I was so happy when the Raiders turned the tables in '76. I just wish the Steelers had been at full strength for the '76 game. This book brought back all those memories and was very interesting to read. I cannot give the book five stars, however, because of the strange way in which it was written. For example, one author describes the '75 season. Now I am ready to read about the '75 playoffs. But instead, the book next gives the second author's account of the '75 season. If they had just taken the time to weave both author's accounts into one continuous tapestry, the book would have flowed much better.Despite the poor way in which the story flows, the book is worth four stars because of the very interesting subject matter. I'm happy I purchased the book.

Title: ivalry between the steelers and raiders
Review: Steeler fan.Always enjoyed the Raider Steeler games.Perhaps a bit to much detail in the first 80 pages when describing the organizational philosphy of both teams.Could have used more interviews of players.

Title: 75% Steelers 25% Raiders
Review: A decent book but clearly written by Steelers fans.Another strange writing technic in this book is one author will talk about a certain year playoff run and then the other author will start over and give his opinion about the same playoff run from the beginning rather than blending the 2 commentaries in together. All and all not a bad book.

Title: Love Letter to the Steelers
Review: I was very excited and looking forward to reading this book when I saw it. It didn't take long for me to see how biased this book is toward the Steelers. I guess I should have know this given one of the two authors (Jim Campbell) had worked in the Steeler organization during their glory years with the foreword written by a Steeler. Atkinson's clothesline hit on Lynn Swann in the 1975 AFC Championship was in the book, but not Blount's hit on Cliff Branch that year. After catching a pass Branch was picked up by Blount and slammed head first into the ground because Branch "owned' him. Same old Raiders play dirty, Steelers play hard. Then there's the 1975 AFC "Ice Bowl" Championship. The field was not in good shape, particularly toward the sideline where there was a large ice buildup. Supposedly, there was a problem with the tarp, which the Steelers tried to fix by squirting it down with more water. The Raiders relied on the vertical game which was compromised. But the authors minimize that by stating the Steelers also had a vertical game. In the interest of full disclosure, I am a Raider fan, but I expected a book that detailed the great games between the two teams, not a love letter to Pittsburgh which encompassed most of the book. Skip it unless you are a Steeler fan.

Title: Avoid this Title...
Review: As someone who reads a ton of football history there is no new information here. I was disappointed. If you are novice fan - ok - if you are a big Steelers or Raiders avoid this. Also they repeated some of the same stories over and over.
