When Nancy Silverton began serving sandwiches one night a week at Campanile, her and husband Mark Peel’s award-winning restaurant, she envisioned a laid-back and intimate evening when she’d be able to relax, chat with customers, and have some fun devising new and creative recipes. Well, she hasn’t had much time to relax: Sandwich Night became one of Campanile’s busiest nights, a vastly popular weekly tradition in Los Angeles and the place to be on Thursdays. And since then, sandwiches have become the latest craze to hit the American food scene.
The reason for Sandwich Night’s success is easy to understand: the sandwiches are incredible. They’re gourmet meals that happen to sit on bread, the furthest thing away from the boring old sandwiches that we usually content ourselves with. Instead of PB&J or tuna salad, how about Braised Artichokes, Ricotta, and Mint Pesto with Pine-Nut Currant Relish? Or Eggplant, Seared Tuna, and Anchoïade? Or even Bacon, Avocado, and Watercress? These open-faced sandwiches are innovative dishes that taste wonderful, look beautiful, and are perfect for entertaining.
The closed-faced sandwiches are delicious new takes on well-loved standards like the Croque Monsieur, the Monte Cristo, the Reuben, and, of course, everyone’s favorite, the Classic Grilled Cheese. Also included are Nancy’s creative sort-of sandwiches—Fondue the Swiss Way, Snackbreads, and Skewered Mozzarella—and tea sandwiches, wonderful creations that will banish memories of limp watercress and insipid egg salad forever. As if this isn’t enough, there are the mouthwatering sandwich cakes and cookies, like the Open-Faced Berry Brioche Sandwich, Chocolate Cake Club Sandwich, and Almost Oreos.
There are recipes for some truly addictive bar snacks, like Cheese Fritters and Candied Spicy Walnuts, to serve before the meal. And there are also recipes for tantalizing spreads and condiments that go well beyond the ordinary. Finally, for the cook who wants to make everything from scratch, Nancy has included recipes for different breads, from Brioche to Hot Dog Buns, based on those from her world-famous La Brea Bakery.
Written in Nancy’s charming, down-to-earth style, these recipes are versatile and easy to follow. As good to look at as they are to eat, these sandwiches offer a new, creative solution to entertaining and will be a valuable addition to the home cook’s repertoire. The result: Sandwich Night is sure to be a hit in your home, too.

Title: Learning from the Masters
Review: As a culinary school student, we are always being encouraged to improve our palates and taste outside of our comfort zones. We also need to start planning where we want to end up cooking. A fine dining establishment, a steakhouse---choices, choices? My goal in reading this book was two-fold: improve my thoughts on the good old sandwich and keep my eye on a future career in a breakfast+lunch establishment. This book accomplished both goals. The sandwich combinations are original and everyone I tried was tasty. The sauces and desserts were also fresh and not a loser among the five I tried out. The only real issue with the book is so very few photos. I know photos add cost to books and I appreciated the lower cost of this cookbook. But, as someone working on her "presentation" skills, descriptions would have been helpful if choosing to have fewer photos. This book will stay in my GIANT cookbook collection.

Title: Grill me a cheese!
Review: The author really gets it right. The trick to a good sandwich isn't a trick at all. When you have a food that has five ingredients, every one of them needs to be very good, and very fresh. The recipes in the book are simple and delicious. I especially like the trick of making the grilled cheese sandwich, then opening it after it is finished cooking and slipping in a cool slice of tomato. Fantastic!Good pictures, too!

Title: Great sandwich cookbook with unique recipes
Review: This cookbook will stretch your sandwich catalog. It has unique recipes. Gotta warn you, you may not have many of the ingredients just laying around your kitchen. For many people, this cookbook is probably for those special moments unless you're a serious sandwich connoisseur. Overall, if you're willing to put in the work, this book is an excellent choice. I love it!

Title: Yummy Breakfast, Lunch, Brunch, and Snack Ideas
Review: The ideas contained in this book are innovative, easy, and fast to prepare. But the most important thing about them is that they taste terrific! I also find that reading through this book gives me ideas of how to combine leftovers that I may have with "staples" recommended in this book to form even more outstanding creations. For those on a diet, if you use a nice crusty piece of bread, you can cut the slides super thin, toast them, and feast right along with everyone else. The sky is the limit on possible creations. Enjoy!

Title: Not what I was expecting based on description
Review: This book was described as having some fundamentals and I wanted to know things like when to toast bread, when to gut a baguette so you don't get so much bread, etc.It did not have this info. Also there was not a single sandwich that looked particularly appealing. The book design is beautifully laid out and the photos are good but that's not enough for it to earn space in our tiny apt.I thought so little of it that I didn't try to resell it. We put it on the building's give-and-take pile by the recycling. Hopefully, someone else can get some good out of it.

Title: Maybe the best sandwiches ever
Review: I bought this book when it came out, and have been much impressed with its creative recipes (is there a dud idea in the book? Perhaps "French Baguette with Butter and Prosciutto does not merit it own recipe, but for the rest?). Her "Braised Leeks, Hard-Cooked Egg, and Anchovies" started our Easter lunch this year (smoked salmon was substituted for the squeamish) and it was absolutely delicious. My sister and husband recently got themselves a wood-burning pizza oven, and I thought that many of these recipes would lend themselves nicely to said. My sister assures me that they do.
