"SHOCKING...TERRIFYING"—Entertainment Weekly

In 1954, at the start of the Cold War, the Soviet military offered four political prisoners their freedom if they participated in an experiment requiring them to remain awake for fourteen days while under the influence of a powerful stimulant gas. The prisoners ultimately reverted to murder, self-mutilation, and madness.

None survived.

In 2018, Dr. Roy Wallis, an esteemed psychology professor at UC Berkeley, is attempting to recreate the same experiment during the summer break in a soon-to-be demolished building on campus. He and two student assistants share an eight-hour rotational schedule to observe their young Australian test subjects around the clock.

What begins innocently enough, however, morphs into a nightmare beyond description that no one could have imagined—with, perhaps, the exception of Dr. Roy Wallis himself.

Title: Do not SLEEP on this book!
Review: I find myself a horror/psychological junkie and this does not disappoint. It kept me guessing throughout the entire story. The characters are amazing and authentic. I read this is one sitting, I could not put it down, it was worth losing sleep over. Get yourself a copy, curl up with a blanket and let yourself sink into the madness that is The Sleep Experiment.

Title: Slow but thought provoking
Review: The book took a long time to gain any traction and at times I found myself skimming just to get through quicker. Once it gets going, it's pretty good and thought provoking. There were some graphic parts towards the end, so if you have a weak stomach or don't like horror, you might not like that. I liked the concept and story line... just took awhile to get there.

Title: A thought provoking, thriller! Kind of graphic.
Review: This book is a little more graphic then others I have bought from Amazon. However it’s very thought provoking. It makes you question your morals and what you actions might be. A very good book club book for adults or older teens. Lots of things to discuss. This was also another book that I didn’t want to put down and lost some sleep so I could keep reading. 10/10 No typos, no fuzzy font, nothing to complain about at all. Worth the money, hands down.

Title: An interesting read.
Review: This was my first reading by this author. I found this to be an interesting read, especially on the whole take of the " Russian Sleep Experiment."I am glad that I read this book, I found it interesting, but in a good way. Some of the characters I did not care for. Namely ' Roy, and Guru. I feel terribly for what happened to the other characters throughout the book, they did not deserve what ultimately happened to them. However, Roy got his comeuppance in the end, which brought the story to a satisfying conclusion for all the pain, cruelty, and injustice that was dealt by his hand.

Title: Bates Does It Again
Review: Jeremy Bates The Sleep Experiment is likely derived from an urban legend called The Russian Sleep Experiment as there are many parallels between the two. The Sleep Experiment is a character-driven tale where the reader is taken in by the good-looking psychology professor, Dr. Wallis. He is chivalrous and kind to his dates and students alike. The reader, board of ethics, and people in the sleep experiment are misinformed. Dr. Wallis tells them humans don’t need to sleep, but he does not intend to prove this. He has previously performed the study on rats and believes he will get the same result using humans, which he wants. The Sleep Experiment is one more example of Jeremy Bate's intricate creative mind. The way he can take an urban legend and weave an entire cast of characters is excellent. The Sleep Experiment leaves the reader thinking about its characters which Bates brings to life like Dr. Frankenstein. Imagine Bates sitting at his computer reading The Russian Sleep Experiment while his mind churns an entire work of fiction. He has done the same with the world's scariest legends and places. Kudos to Bates. While the characters and storyline were beautiful for this reader, the ending was anti-climactic and predictable. As the characters were thought of for days after finishing the book, the end could not be remembered. After re-reading the end, I give The Sleep Experiment four out of five stars. It is for all older young adults and all other mature audiences.

Title: A good read with a few annoying quirks
Review: Overall this book in a good read. Beginning with complaints the story's epilogue ending felt a bit forced and potentially unnecessary. In addition the character Brooke had an unremarkable resolve. I desperately wanted her to succeed in her mission near the end of the book (without giving plot points away.) Some of the pacing and side scenes seemed a little unnecessary however, they were few and far between. read of stereotypical characters from other reviewers before reading the book and typically found them nonexistent 95% of the time. Sure, it begins a bit like it but they seem to disappear as the story progresses. The climax is very well written aside from a chase scene before the final climax.I was engaged throughout and read it in a two day sitting. I felt the characters were strong and held their own through the story and even one of the female characters who I had despised during the first half of the book had made me feel sympathy when things took a turn for her. I personally loved the grotesqueness when the experiment takes a hold of the lab rats. The vivid imagery and startling realization that there was no turning back made for a great test of character for another character.blah blah blah, it was a good read.

Title:
Review: Its a solid novel with well written characters and a good thrill. The only reason for the missing 1 star is my personal preference.Imo there is a little too much backstory told about the characters. Some readers may love this as it might make the story feel more authentic and in consequence more thrilling overall. To me the way some of the characters are introduced feels wordy, boring and unnecessary. As an example Stephen Kind's Cell barely tells any backstory of the characters, yet they still feel real and believable. All in all i would have enjoyed as well as expected to read more about the experiment and its suspects than the ones conducting it and their personal life. However many might like the way it's actually written best, this is just my opinion. Thus and because of the really strong middle part and ending : solid 4/5

Review: So, the good: everything that has to do with the actual experimentThe bad: the ending kinda defeats the point of the storyThe could-be-better: drop all the chapters wasted on the researchers' personal livesMy advice, read the last chapter but not the epilogue, it seriously ruins most of the story's positives

However, some readers find the pacing slow and the storyline unsatisfying. Opinions are mixed on the writing quality, with some finding it well-written and descriptive, while others say it's poorly written and inexperienced. Readers disagree on the horror content, with some finding it part horror, part suspense, and part thriller.
