The Arthur C. Clarke award-winning author of Children of Time brings us an extraordinary space opera about humanity on the brink of extinction, and how one man's discovery will save or destroy us all.

The war is over. Its heroes forgotten. Until one chance discovery . . . Idris has neither aged nor slept since they remade him in the war. And one of humanity's heroes now scrapes by on a freelance salvage vessel, to avoid the attention of greater powers. After earth was destroyed, mankind created a fighting elite to save their species, enhanced humans such as Idris. In the silence of space they could communicate, mind-to-mind, with the enemy. Then their alien aggressors, the Architects, simply disappeared—and Idris and his kind became obsolete. Now, fifty years later, Idris and his crew have discovered something strange abandoned in space. It's clearly the work of the Architects—but are they returning? And if so, why? Hunted by gangsters, cults and governments, Idris and his crew race across the galaxy hunting for answers. For they now possess something of incalculable value, that many would kill to obtain.

Title: A real blast
Review: I was blown away by Children of Time (and its sequels), but I was a little reluctant to jump into this one because it seemed a little more shallow. But it’s a clever space opera with applause-worthy world building. Very interesting juxtaposition between the scrappy, obviously capitalist Colonials and the utopian communist Partheni (made up of clones, of course!). Per usual, Tchaikovsky creates believable, interesting characters and has incredible comic timing. The good guys are complicated, the bad guys are complicated, and the universe is never what it seems. We’re blessed with Tchaikovsky amazing imagination and prose.

Title: A solid series. Get all three books if you get the first.
Review: A strong, imaginative cohesive three book series that is fun to read. The universe creation is great and the many alien species are fun to read about an imaging.A series for true space opera sci-fi fans and fans of stories that take place all over the universe. The 4 stars is given instead of 5 because there is a fair amount of redundancy on some aspects of the story. Particularly in some of the conflict parts in book one, and in the other 2 books, just some of the features of storytelling. If it had been a film/series, I would have used the fast forward button to scroll past some of the redundancy.Overall, a fun series to read and I would recommend it to fans of this sci-fi subgenre.

Title: really well written
Review: Excellent dialogue, unique story with clever world building that never got cumbersome. I’m embarrassed to admit this is the first I’ve read of Mr Tchaikovsky’s work, sure won’t be the last.

Title: amazing series
Review: Be sure to get all three books and read them without interruption. This is one of the best space operas you will read. Few authors can create an expansive universe and cohesive story like Tchaikovsky does in this series. First three books I've read from him but certainly won't be the last. The first 100-150 pages of book one are definitely a little slow but it's a setup for all the characters and situations that follow the rest of the way. I'm glad I didn't give up that early. As the story unfolds I found myself fully engaged and immersed in the drama. Probably took me 3 days to get through the first half of the first book, then finished the rest of the trilogy in a week. Great characters, big story lines, expansive universe.

Title: Cthulhuesque space opera
Review: Don’t expect hard science, but the characters are colourful and engaging, and things move along at a good clip. The ”psionics” and ”jump space” stuff is excellent and really evocative, and worth the read for that alone.

Title: This is an awesome book!
Review: Hard science fiction, incredible universe building and dramatic plot. Action, danger, catastrophic upheavals. Yet, the focus is on a group of uniquely talented multi-species misfits, bound together by group loyalty, each having a unique ability that’s means survival instead of defeat in a series of almost unbeatable brush ups. This story forces each character to search within themselves their prejudices, their breaking points, their commitments and willingness to sacrifice. This was a well-written story from a promising author. Well done!!

Title: An epic Space Opera
Review: This absolutely epic space opera is without a doubt one of my new favourites and even though it's still only February I know it'll be on my best books of the year list. From the prologue I was immersed into the expansive world as Tchaikovsky threw me right into action where I had to kind of piece together this world of humans and aliens and what was at stake for the occupants. Starting with Solace and Idris there were already two interesting characters and it only grew from there. As the story progressed, there was one of my favourite elements of sci-fi, the found family, the misfit crew and their beloved bedraggled ship. Each crew member, humans and other species brought something unique to the story, whether in perspective, morality or motivation. The various alien species that inhabit the universe here were also fun to read about and got me thinking of the different ways that life can evolve and what that can look like - much the way that Tchaikovsky's "Doors of Eden" did. Each planet they visited was vastly different, though inhabited by humans (and others) and they were so richly drawn that I could've spent the 500 pages visiting different ones. But, there was much more to see and learn, much more layers to what is only the first in a trilogy. The architects, the enemy, was hard to conceptualise in their vastness and purpose and I am still so intrigued by them and where it will all lead as the story progresses. The spread of humanity throughout the universe and how they travel those vast distances was also interesting without the need to try to make every little thing make scientific sense because ... well how could it?Overall, I walked away from this wishing I had the next book "Eyes of the Void" in my hands to read right away because I need to continue on with Idris and Solace and the rest of the crew. I need to know the fate of humanity and the purpose of the architects. After 500+ pages I feel like it's just the surface and I cannot wait to continue on.

Title: Good Space Opera
Review: Read the Children of Time series and found it easy to read enjoyable sci-fi. I was reluctant to commit to another trilogy by Tchaikovsky but am a fan of space operas. The horror of unspace alone made this 4 stars for me. Good complex plot, good character development and this checked all my requirements. Sometimes this felt a little more young adult to me than something like the Expanse but overall it didn't prevent me from enjoying the series.

Review: While his award winning earlier series was clearly well thought through, it just seemed to drag down into the weeds and details that did not advance the plot. Additionally, in this story, which is quick paced, absorbing and can keep you up that extra half hour at night, the main character is a bit less pathetic then in his award winning series where that character is really just a drip. A fun enjoyable read. Don't need to be preached to which seems to be something the writer had figured out.

Review: Excellent Sci Fi book, which tells a unique story with original characters. I really liked how the story is unveiled in a way that you can understand slowly both the characters and the world they live in.

Review: Tchaikovsky skill to create new fantasy worlds and universes is unlimited. Here it present us with a new and interesting one that raises or reformulates the question: what if the alien enemy not only outsmarts us technologically? What if this enemy is so superior that even does not percive us or consider us as microbes? This should make humans think about what we do to other living species and the earth itself.
