A Wall Street Journal Best Science Fiction Book of 2018

“Just try to put this gripping thriller down once you pick it up.”—AARP

“A shock on every other page.”—Wall Street Journal

How far would you go to find The One?

A simple DNA test is all it takes. Just a quick mouth swab and soon you’ll be matched with your perfect partner—the one you’re genetically made for.

That’s the promise made by Match Your DNA. A decade ago, the company announced that they had found the gene that pairs each of us with our soul mate. Since then, millions of people around the world have been matched. But the discovery has its downsides: test results have led to the breakup of countless relationships and upended the traditional ideas of dating, romance and love.

Now five very different people have received the notification that they’ve been “Matched.” They’re each about to meet their one true love. But “happily ever after” isn’t guaranteed for everyone. Because even soul mates have secrets. And some are more shocking than others…

A word-of-mouth hit in the United Kingdom, The One is a fascinating novel that shows how even the simplest discoveries can have complicated consequences.

Title: wow, terrific
Review: I read this in a day. I couldn’t put it down. I am not typically someone who enjoys reading about multiple storylines that never cross. I usually end up liking one storyline more and read quickly in others to get back to it. The One follows about 6 different storylines all linked by their lives being affected by a new technology that can match your DNA to your predetermined mate. Each storyline was robust and filled with interesting, solid characters. There wasn’t a storyline I didn’t find intriguing and surprising. This was an amazing read. So very impressive.

Title: Not "the one" for me. Didn't hate it, but didn't love it.
Review: The One is an interesting mix of romance, thriller, sci-fi and futuristic. It went from sweet love stories to violent killing. The serial killer element of the book was a little too gruesome for me, with extremely graphic descriptions of violence.Summary: A breakthrough scientific discovery enables people to take a DNA test and find the person they are genetically meant to be with: their match. However, with this exciting new science comes devastating consequences, including infidelity, break-ups, lies, and deception. Traditional ideas of romance, dating and love are challenged and changed. This book follows five couples on their journey of discovering their match, the chaos that ensues, and the consequences that will change lives forever.I know this book has been much-loved on Bookstagram. While I could tell that this was a well-written, well thought-out, well-executed book, it just wasn’t “the one” for me 😉. I didn’t hate it, but I didn’t love it. I did appreciate the unique and interesting premise of the book, and I enjoyed the twists, turns and surprises. This book presents thought-provoking moral dilemmas and a debate of right and wrong. I also liked how the short chapters made it a quick read. But overall, I just found this book sad and depressing, describing some of the worst humanity has to offer.

Review: “To love or have loved, that is enough. Ask nothing further. There is no other pearl to be found in the dark folds of life.” - The One.SYNOPSIS: How far would you go to find the one? The concept of being DNA matched to your soulmate is such an interesting and unique idea, that is both marvelous and risky at once. There are lots of discussions to have around this topic, and we found it to be fun. The overall plot in this book is also great. In my opinion, it went places that I wasn’t expecting it to, and also was a bit darker than I was suspecting as well. There were multiple twists that I didn’t see coming, and a few that I guessed, however it was all enjoyable nonetheless. I especially think this book is great because there could be a possibility that this technology could exist in the future. We already have DNA testing for several other things, so I do not think the authors idea of this technology is too far off.Another plus point of the book was the characters. I loved how this story didn’t focus on one character, but of five characters and their unique experiences. Each character was different than the other, and I think their different experiences and circumstances lended itself well to the book. At first it was a little daunting to keep track of all the characters and their relationships, however, the book follows the same pattern of character chapters so it becomes easier to remember who is who. This was a great move by the author as well. Overall, there were characters that I thought were more interesting than others and characters that I cared about more than others, but appreciated all their stories anyway. As mentioned, if you need a fun book for your book club, I think this one is great! It is fairly approachable and garners lots of discussion. Even if you are reading solo, I still would recommend this book. Personally, I have been reading a lot of heavier books lately, so it is nice to break those books up with something like this book.

Title: LOVED
Review: I have yet to read a book by John Marrs that I did not like. This is no exception. I love his dystopian novels of a not so far-off screwed up future. There's no need to summarize the story as that is done in the description so what I will say is this novel it definitely a page-turner and will make you stay up past your bedtime saying, "Just one more chapter..."
