Sage Winters always knew her sister was a little different even though they were identical twins. They loved the same things and shared a deep understanding, but Rosemary—awake to every emotion, easily moved to joy or tears—seemed to need more protection from the world.
Six years after Rosemary’s death from pneumonia, Sage, now sixteen, still misses her deeply. Their mother perished in a car crash, and Sage’s stepfather, Alan, resents being burdened by a responsibility he never wanted. Yet despite living as near strangers in their Staten Island apartment, Sage is stunned to discover that Alan has kept a shocking secret: Rosemary didn’t die. She was committed to Willowbrook State School and has lingered there until just a few days ago, when she went missing.
Sage knows little about Willowbrook. It’s always been a place shrouded by rumor and mystery. A place local parents threaten to send misbehaving kids. With no idea what to expect, Sage secretly sets out for Willowbrook, determined to find Rosemary. What she learns, once she steps through its doors and is mistakenly believed to be her sister, will change her life in ways she never could imagined . . .
“A heartbreaking yet insightful read, this novel will open one's eyes to the evil in this world.” —New York Journal of Books

Title: Tough but good story
Review: This book was a darker look at recent history, and while the subject was very dark and difficult to read the book was well written. There are multiple story lines all weaved together, with the last third of the book being a whirlwind.

Title: The lost girls of Willowbrook
Review: This was based on true events and was very disturbing. The abuse went on in the 70, and the abusers were able to get away with all the mistreatment and lack of care. How did the parents allow such abuse, let alone the state of New York. I really couldn't wrap my head around this. It was a very well told story by one who was mistaken for her twin sister, who indeed was admitted to this home for the disabled.

Title: Lost Girls of Willowbrook
Review: The overall story was good but I found the writing stilted. The middle if the book dragged. The ending was good but choppy.

Title: Amazing book!
Review: This novel kept my interest the whole time. It was very well done. Page turner for sure. I felt like yes, I read I was going back-and-forth about the end. I was glad to see the outcome for the main character.

Title: Could Not Put It Down
Review: As difficult as many of the scenarios were to read about, I could not stop reading desperate to find out what would happen to Sage. I felt her fear, I felt her pain and I couldnât abandon her until I found out that she ended up OK. As long as you can brace yourself for some of the atrocities described in this book itâs well worth reading,

Title: Excellent story, but hard to read.
Review: This is deficient a page Turner. Filled with twists and turns, mystery, suspense. However, it is extremely disturbing to read about the experiences at Willowbrook. The fact that these horrors actually happened within those walls is what makes this story so difficult to read. The fictional parts of the story seem to come as a relief after reading about the details of conditions and experiences that have been documented about Willowbrook.

Review: I can't really say that I enjoyed this book simply because the subject matter is so grim. It is a well-thought-out, well-researched, important story brought to life. I understand that it is a semi-fictional account of a real place with real people who suffered horribly. Even when I sat in a gloriously sunny nook reading on a beautiful day, the story gave me the chills.I did enjoy the author's skill in crafting and telling a story and particularly for integrating the local "Cropsey" legend. The tale had twists and turns and ups and downs that kept me intrigued. If you're the kind of person who yells "No! Go back! Turn around!" at the screen when watching a scary movie, you'll do the same with this book. The only part I didn't really like was the final resolution involving Sage's life going forward. It all wrapped up much too easily and conveniently for me. People were found, motives were explained, rifts were mended, all with only a line or two. Perhaps the author wanted it that way to juxtapose a fairy-tale ending with a horror story.

Review: To know this is a true story is very hard to read, unlike fiction books where you know it's made up. A great read once started I couldn't put it down until the end , very sad and heartbreaking until the end .
