Like a car alarm, bagpipe music, or a doorbell ringing in the middle of the night, hearing this all-new audio edition of The Bad Beginning will only upset you. This unique multi-voice recording brings the first book in Lemony Snicket's alarming A Series of Unfortunate Events to such terrible life that no one should really have to experience it. Unless you have an ear for such ghastly details as a tragic fire, a nefarious villain, itchy clothing, and cold porridge for breakfast, all narrated in chilly detail by the distinguished, and disturbed, Tim Curry with a team of talented readers, you would be better off listening to something else.

Title: The Bad Beginning by Lemony Snicket
Review: A Series of Unfortunate EventsThe Bad Beginningby. Lemony SnicketRating: ***** (5 stars)Book Length: 188 pagesGenre: Children, Children's Chapter, Middle SchoolIt has been a while since I last read this book and I was surprised at how much I enjoyed returning to its pages. The most unique, intriguing, and frustrating aspect of the book is that the main character of the story could be argued to be the narrator. Everything is told through the voice of Lemony Snicket, which is actually the narrator and not the author's actual name. The style is not a typical style for most children's books and it is pulled off with success. The writing style is amazing. You are pulled into the story, engage with all the characters, and before you know you have finished the tale. I almost went and immediately bought the next book. The only thing that stopped me was the huge pile of books I currently have to finish. It truly is no wonder that this series has obtained such success. There is one aspect of the writing style that I found quite annoying. The narrator continually defined the words that he and the other characters were using. As the story progressed the other characters also begin defining the words that they were using. It was annoying because I am an adult reader who was well aware of what all these words meant. Yet, while I was quite engaged by the story the book was not written for me. It was written for middle school readers who are still increasing their vocabulary. The first time I encountered Snicket's unique way of defining words in a story I knew what he was doing. While I, as an adult reader, was slightly annoyed I was also kind of awed by his genius. He has this book that he doesn't want to dumb down for his readers, yet he also doesn't want to loose their interest as they encounter words they may not be familiar with. To decrease the frustration of reading by including the definitions into the quirky flow that already existed in the novel is nothing short of genius. As reviewed on The Book Recluse Review.

Title: Great children book
Review: This is a short, easy children's book. If I had read this when I was younger, I bet I'd have fallen in love. Bad things happen, and there are many lessons. It's not gonna be difficult for a kid to read this, because the author adds difficult words for children and explains what it means, and the author is very good at making sure you now understand the word by repeating it. The book itself surprised me with its quality. Good material and it overall looks really good. I'm an adult, so this didn't exactly make me interested in continuing the series, but if I had children myself, I'd read this book for them

Title: LUCKY FIND
Review: I learned about "The Series of Unfortunate Events" series from watching a "CBS Morning" segment of the author introducing the books to a captivated audience of children at a bookstore event. I was intrigued. I bought the first three books. Then the next three, and the next three, and...I'm impressed. The books target age 9 but are enjoyed by all ages, even adults. The books have so much personality and read aloud well, in case you read a chapter to your children every evening like I do. The humor is clever and subtle (grown-ups will appreciate it). The story is exciting, showcasing the Baudelaire children as resourceful, intelligent role models for young readers. However, as an English teacher, I was especially impressed with the author's ingenious way of lacing the story with definitions of words, which never seems contrived nor impedes the story telling. Book Two begins by defining the word "irony"...no kidding! Can you imagine that in a children's book?If you're not yet convinced, consider this...I taught a grade 10 special education last year and selected this book for a class novel. The 30 reluctant readers came to class the next day and said they had read the book overnight! They couldn't believe they had actually read an entire book and loved it so much and couldn't put it down. They begged to read Book Two. The school librarian ordered the entire set, and they've been checked out non-stop ever since the books arrived. Now that's a recommendation!

Review: ...you would be better off reading some other book. This is how the book starts. No, it didn't deter my son from reading this book. On the contrary, it took fancy of him so much as to finish the book in 2 days and then pursuing me to order next books in the series. So far within one week of reading first book, he has already read second and third part !!A story of 3 siblings orphaned by death of their parents in fire and Count Olaf and his men who are after the fortune the siblings were to get through inheritance. Well..it goes till 13 books in the series.! So far so good.A very good choice for self reading for ages 10+ when children ought to come out of fantasy lands of Geronimo and cartoons. The built of the book is quite sturdy, hard bound and small. This review is for Egmont's hardcover edition (ISBN : 978-0749746117)
