Nibbles and noshes from New York City, America's kitchen.
New York is pierogi, pasta fagiole, and chicken soup: Avgolemono, Brazilian Canja, Kreplach, Soo Chow, and Ajiaco. New York is Sylvia's Ribs, plus Edna Lewis's Greens and Mrs. Kornick's Polish Corn Bread. And the New York Cookbook is all of this, and much, much more. Collected from all five boroughs by New York Times food writer Molly O'Neill, here are over 500 recipes--and over 700 photographs--that celebrate one thing: a passion for food and eating.
Deborah Markow's Braised Lamb Shanks and Mrs. Urscilla O'Connor's Codfish Puffs. Four-star chef Andre Soltner's Roast Chicken and Vernon Jordan's Jerk Style Jamaican Chicken. Robert Motherwell's Brandade de Morue and the Abyssinian Baptist Church's Long-Cooked Green Beans. Plus Katharine Hepburn's Brownies, Lisa's Mexican Flan, and Sally Darr's Golden Delicious Tart. Includes shopping guides, cooking tips, and walking tours.
Winner of a 1992 IACP/Julia Child Cookbook Award. Winner of the 1992 James Beard Food and Beverage Book Award.

Title: Just great, 'real' cooking!
Review: Bought this well after the book's debut. Basically, it's like having a giant neighborhood in your kitchen: friends who'll share recipes with you for everything from everyday family dishes (brisket, meatloaf, mac casseroles), ethnic specialties (Jamaican, Cuban, Ethiopian, Indian, Israeli, Polish, Italian, French...), even restaurant dishes of the day. What's great is that they're all highly do-able at home. I have the original/first Gourmet cookbook, and the latest from them. Using these to compare (because all three are 'compilations') I'd put this one right behind the first Gourmet, but ahead of the second. My reasoning is that the first and second choices are strong on variety and cooking, while the recent Gourmet, which I ranked third, is long on techique/equipment/unusual ingredients. (It's not that unusual ingredients can't be found--most are in the average large supermarket. I sometimes want to spend a whole day on a meal--just not every day.) I clearly like the book--would buy it and would recommend it to friends/give as a gift...it's a go-to when you want to make something different but can't decide on what to make.

Title: Good but some recipes are hit or miss
Review: This book has the best spaghetti sauce recipe --my husband and I loved it--it was a way to bring NY cooking to Hawaii since there are not many good italian restaurants out here like in NY, which I miss. On the downside, not all recipes were good. For ex, I did not like the Madison Square burgers nor did I like the Pad Thai noodles (I tried recipes from Keo or Cooking light for Pad Thai which were better). I will try some more recipes from this book and hopefully will have better luck.

Title: A wonderful cookbook
Review: A really fascinating cook book, with wonderful historic photos from the past, and amazing recipies. I find too often these days, cook books have too much of the authors "story" when in fact most of us want the recipies. This book however, really is good reading. Highly recommended.

Title: This cookbook was a disappointment to me..
Review: As a former Manhattanite, I enjoyed the descriptions of old New York foodie icons and establishments. However, I expected recipes of the caliber of those Molly O'Neil used to do for the Sunday New York Times magazine food section--which remain among my favorites to this day. Unfortunately, this book doesn't deliver that.

Title: If you love the city of New York
Review: I purchased this priceless book while dubbing an old VHS tape I had of Molly Neill (Molly O'Neil's New York) It was because of this tape that I got to try some of the fabulous, gastronomical restaurants that are mentioned in this gigantic book. The book is a compilation of many mouth-watering recipes of old, traditional and new restaurants, delis, bistros, and multicultural cafes in NYC. There are many background stories of how such restaurants got started, and how and why they prepare their delectable dishes. If you love the city of New York, this book should be a treasure on your shelf.

Review: Not a new offering I know, but still relevant. If you are keen on American food it,s a fantastic read. Having recently visited New York for the first time i thrilled to find so many restaurants mentioned that I had actually seen and eaten in. Now I,ve got background info and recipes that I can try at home. If ever you thought that Americans only eat burgers steaks and ribs, get ready for a surprise, this book covers an amazing array of delights, can't wait to try them.

Review: This book captures the essence of NYC and its philosophy of eating and sharing food, not only with some great recipes but also with photos and vignettes from the daily life of the greatest food market in the Western hemisphere! Crammed pages full of unexpected delights, much like the city itself! Personal faves: Moshe's Falafel and Firehouse Veal & Eggplant Parmigiano.
