At 95, the legendary Mel Brooks continues to set the standard for comedy across television, film, and the stage. Now, for the first time, this EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony) winner shares his story in his own words.
“Laugh-out-loud hilarious and always fascinating, from the great Mel Brooks. What else do you expect from the man who knew Jesus and dated Joan of Arc?” (Billy Crystal)
For anyone who loves American comedy, the long wait is over. Here are the never-before-told, behind-the-scenes anecdotes and remembrances from a master storyteller, filmmaker, and creator of all things funny.
All About Me! charts Mel Brooks’ meteoric rise from a Depression-era kid in Brooklyn to the recipient of the National Medal of Arts. Whether serving in the United States Army in World War II, or during his burgeoning career as a teenage comedian in the Catskills, Mel was always mining his experiences for material, always looking for the perfect joke. His iconic career began with Sid Caesar’s Your Show of Shows, where he was part of the greatest writers’ room in history, which included Carl Reiner, Neil Simon, and Larry Gelbart. After co-creating both the mega-hit 2000 Year Old Man comedy albums and the classic television series Get Smart, Brooks’ stellar film career took off. He would go on to write, direct, and star in The Producers, The Twelve Chairs, Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, Silent Movie, High Anxiety, and Spaceballs, as well as produce groundbreaking and eclectic films including The Elephant Man, The Fly, and My Favorite Year. Brooks then went on to conquer Broadway with his record-breaking, Tony-winning musical, The Producers.
All About Me! offers fans insight into the inspiration behind the ideas for his outstanding collection of boundary-breaking work, and offers details about the many close friendships and collaborations Brooks had, including those with Sid Caesar, Carl Reiner, Gene Wilder, Madeleine Kahn, Alfred Hitchcock, and the great love of his life, Anne Bancroft.
Filled with tales of struggle, achievement, and camaraderie, listeners will gain a more personal and deeper understanding of the incredible body of work behind one of the most accomplished and beloved entertainers in history.

Title: Very Funny and a great storyteller!
Review: Mel Brooks really knows how to tell a story. It is fantastic getting to hear about the making of such great movies as Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, and Spaceballs. But did you know he served in WWII? Well, now you do. And there are so many interesting tidbits about Mel Brooks that have nothing to do with movies and more that do. You would be a fool not to read this autobiography. Very entertaining!!!

Title: Great Book
Review: Iâve loved Mel Brooks since I was younger and I was introduced to Young Frankenstein, Spaceballs and Robin Hood: Men in Tights. Mel Brooks has always been top tier for comedy movies to me. A YouTube movie director I watch mentioned this book, and sometimes I like an autobiography, so I bought it.I loved how the book is divided into periods of Melâs life and by what movie he was making at the time. He told information I wasnât aware of before and really made me want to go and rewatch the older movies I never hear anyone talk about like High Anxiety, Silent Movie, and The Twelve Chairs. The book has been consistently entertaining.

Title: Like a conversation with Mel Brooks!
Review: I've been eagerly awaiting an autobiographical treatment of legendary funny man Mel Brooks' life since at least 2003. That's when his friend, Carl Reiner, said in his own book, "My Anecdotal Life," published that year, that Brooks was working on one. Reiner promised that it would "be out soon." Apparently, at the time, Mr. Brooks let other projects take precedence. But finally, something good came out of the COVID lock-down! Mel credits his son for suggesting that he write the book "All About Me" to make good use of the time. Reading this book was like having a conversation with Mel Brooks, as he tells of his youth, his military service, then his career as a comedic performer and writer for TV, movies and Broadway. In the second half of the book, he includes chapters on the processes of creating his award-winning films, like "Blazing Saddles," "Young Frankenstein," and "The Producers," and then taking the latter two to the Broadway stage, with record-breaking results. Many parts of the book are laugh-out-loud funny, making for an extremely enjoyable read. If you're a fan of any of Mr. Brooks' work, you'll certainly get a charge out of learning the full scope of his remarkable output.

Title: Itâs All About My Moviesâ¦.. Very Little About Me
Review: Love Mel Brooks but could not finish the book. It got tiresome reading about how every movie was made. Definitely a conscious effort to keep his private life to himself. Very, very little about his relationship with Anne and nothing about his first wife and extended family. Everybody he mentions in the book is a tremendous talent and a wonderful person. Not one conflict with anybody in all those years of show business. I mean you donât have to dump dirt on people but when you say everyone was great It takes away from the folks who were really great. He hints that there may be a part 2. Maybe he is thinking Iâll really write my autobiography that is about me.

Review: Autobiographies range from "Ain't I great" to "I got lucky". The former tend to be egotistical self-promotion and boring to read. The latter downplay the effort that goes into "being lucky". I've been a long-time fan of Mel Brooks, and thoroughly enjoyed this book. It's a mix of the two styles I mention, but very little self-congratulatory. It was interesting to read about his background and the work that went into his productions, and reading chapter after chapter brought back some happy memories of seeing his work on screen and on Broadway. What's not here are personal details. While he touches on his childhood and service in the War a little, mentions of his private life are sparse; his marriage to Anne Bancroft (and her later passing due to cancer) are briefly mentioned. So you won't get much insight into Mel the person, as much as Mel the entertainer. Which is, presumably, how he wants it.The writing style is engaging, and the book is laid out mostly chronologically with detours here and there to flesh out details. There's a look at the work that goes into movies and plays, and through it all Mel gives credit where it's due and gives us a look into his fascinating life. He wrote the book because of the pandemic, so this is one great thing to come out of that! After reading the book, I am going to do a Mel Brooks movie marathon. Can't wait. Well done, Mel!

Review: A wonderful autobiography about a man who has dedicated his life to humour and laughter. So many great stories here from his long life in the movies. If you are a Mel Brooks fan then you already know! Many of his films nowadays would not be able to be made because of cancel culture. Great read
