Embark on a fresh and delicious culinary tour of coastal America! Shrimp Country invites readers to discover the southern shorelines from Texas to the Carolinas, savoring the region’s sea air, salty characters, and succulent shrimp.
Shrimp is a perfect ingredient. Mild enough to be a part of delicately-flavored dishes and tasty enough to be eaten on its own, it pairs well with both spicy and sweet ingredients and can be fried, sautéed, steamed, broiled, or grilled. In this savory homage to the crustacean, Anna Marlis Burgard swaps stories and recipes with the people who know it best—island dwellers whose ancestors have worked in the shrimping business for generations, mariners who seem to straddle ancient and modern worlds, marine biologists, and James Beard Award–winning chefs.
Burgard gathers more than 100 tempting recipes from regional classics like pilau, creole, and bog to global fare such as shrimp empanadas, shrimp saganaki, and tom kha gai. Coastal families share their favorite dishes, seaside chefs reveal their customer-luring secrets, and Burgard offers up cooking tips that make prep time a breeze. Transported to strange and beautiful places including South Padre Island, Texas, Santa Rosa Island, Florida, and Swanquarter, North Carolina, readers will enjoy sampling some of the best food America has to offer.
Brimming with the larger-than-life personalities of trawler captains, food truck masters, diner cooks, and award-winning chefs, Shrimp Country is a love letter to coastal communities and their joy-filled, soul-fueling kitchens. Kick off your shoes, roll up your sleeves, and dig in!

Title: sturdy gem blew me out of the proverbial water
Review: I'm not a cookbook collector, but this small, sturdy gem blew me out of the proverbial water. I lived in "shrimp country," Tybee Island, for several years, and the constellation of Burgard's photographs, essays, and recipes is redolent of the pungent marshes and salty wind I knew so well. While the book is nicely chaptered by recipe category, each section begins with a story- of shrimp captains, local hangouts, beaches less traveled- tales that provide a remarkable peek into worlds behind the peel-and-eat.Her photographs augment the tales, and lordy, the food! Burgard has included shrimp "primers" include the ten commandments of shrimp, which serves up instructions for folks like me who thought they understood a thing about shrimp and cooking. Most of the recipes are not only beautiful, but usually very doable for even beginning cooks. I love this book. It is much more than another shrimp or seafood cookbook. It is art, beautiful writing, and, I swear, emits whiffs of brine and the unmistakable aroma of shrimp docks in the wee hours of the morning.

Title: This book is more for reading stories than good shrimp recipes, disappointed.
Review: I was actually disappointed in this "cookbook". I realized when I bought it that there was narratives in it as well as recipes but I had no idea the extent of the stories. It was my mistake. I was looking for some new regional recipes for shrimp as we were headed to the Gulf Coast but the recipes weren't unusual and seemed incidental to the story telling. I won't make that mistake again - recipes only next time.
