We all saw it at once. Half a dozen voices screamed, 'Grenade!' simultaneously. Then everything went into slow motion. The grenade took an age to travel through its 20 metre arc. A dark, small oval-shaped package of misery the size of a peach....

April 2004: Dan Mills and his platoon of snipers flew into Southern Iraq, part of an infantry battalion sent to win hearts and minds. They were soon fighting for their lives.

Back home we were told they were peacekeeping. But there was no peace to keep. Because within days of arriving in theatre, Mills and his men were caught up in the longest, most sustained firefight British troops had faced for over 50 years.

This awe-inspiring account tells of total war in throat-burning winds and 50-degree heat, blasted by mortars and surrounded by heavily armed militias. For six months they fought alone: isolated, besieged and under constant enemy fire. Their heroic stand was a modern-day Rorke's Drift.

Title: Excellent memoir of a war torn tour of duty in Iraq...
Review: Sniper One takes place in a little known place in Southern Iraq, one that was oftentimes overlooked when other more American centered focus was placed on Baghdad. So when I [picked up Sniper One I didn't really know what I was getting in for. Ultimately my jaw dropped as I continued to read what it was like to a peacekeeper in a war torn city surrounded by your enemies.Mills gives an ever so brief account of his life before going to Iraq. The build up was almost movie-esque as Mills leads you towards the climax with teasing tidbits about conflict elsewhere compared to their peaceful existence in Iraq. This is soon shattered as Mills' patrol accidentally parks next to the Iraqi insurgency headquarters. From there on the fighting grew more and more intense. Just as quickly as the fighting started, though, it seemed to die down as the Brits finally took things on the offensive and showed the Iraqi fighters what they are capable of. This seemed to quiet things down some. They even got to take a leisurely swim in their swimming pool. This is where Mills memoir shines. The conflict erupted again, completely surrounding the British in their compound. RPGs and AK47s were constantly bombarding them, not too mention mortar rounds dropping on them at all times of the day.Mills does an expert job of describing the action as it ebbed and flowed. Just as you though the fighting was done it would erupt with more intensity. When one all out attack ended you learn it was just a probe to see how the British responded, leading to the even bigger assault on the complex. Mills drops in some exciting anecdotes throughout, constantly showing the reader what its like in a war torn city on an everyday basis. Ultimately the British could have leveled the city, but that wasn't their purpose there. The "special forces" bloke who made it in past enemy lines was evidence of this as he brought in the mother lode of all sniper rifles and called in a precise aerial attack on a mortar team.In the end Sniper One is an amazing account in one man's tour in a war torn country, constantly under siege. Mills does an excellent job in not only telling his story but in describing everything with such an ebb and flow that it kept me interested throughout the whole memoir. Just as I thought it was over the attack resumed. A definite recommend.5 stars.

Title: An interesting insight into modern warfare
Review: The situation they found themselves in seemed pretty much unsurvivable yet somehow they got through it all. I'd have liked more technical insight into the art of sniping but overall it was a good read and gave those of us with no notion of what war is actually like a good inside look at what goes on. No frills or exaggeration, just the facts ma'am, is how I felt Sgt Mills presented the story. There was one particular passage that had me laughing so hard it hurt (it had to do with a guy on a bike, a roadside bomb, and a leg). As Mills said, it was like a scene from some macabre Monty Python sketch.

Title: A fantastically well written first hand account!
Review: This is a fantastic book! I've read hundreds of war stories and this ranks near the top of the list, rivaling "Lone Survivor" as one of the best in recent memory. Not only is this a nail-biting true story; but it's an extremely well written one. Even the tid bits about their lives between battles is fun to read, especially the enlisted mans humor combined with British slang that's absolutely hilarious. Finally, I thoroughly enjoyed learning about the heroics of our British allies in Iraq. There's only one thing our media likes to avoid more than the heroics of our soldiers, and that's the heroics of our allies who undermine the theme that the world is lined up against us. My compliments and thanks to the author for his great book and for his service in our common cause. Sniper One: On Scope and Under Siege with a Sniper Team in Iraq

Title: I almost put this down...
Review: I started reading this and as an American military nonfiction fan I had trouble understanding some of the terms used by the British sniper who authored this book. I'm so glad I stuck it out! Great read all the way to the last page! I highly recommend this fascinating, fast paced, action packed story. Read it, you won't be disappointed.

Title: A great British account of working a sniper team in Iraq.
Review: As an American who has read a lot of American authors/soldiers write about war it is nice to get the British perspective. Although they share a lot of the same characteristics, such as camaraderie with their fellow soldiers and compassion for the civilians caught in the middle, they have a distinctly different way of thinking about service to their country. Brits also seem to have a different sense and level of humor when in a battle zone. I had read about this regarding WWII soldiers (in book written by former German soldiers) and really saw this play out in Sgt. Mills' writing.Additionally, this isn't written in the Queen's English, which is also refreshing. I got more of the feel of what it would be like to have been in Iraq with this troop because Sgt. Mills was using everyday language.Personally, I would have liked to have read a bit more about his first-hand sniper work but there was enough other action to keep the book interesting. But I'm finding that this is kind of a British thing. Brits tend to be much less dramatic about what they did on a day to day basis while in the service and more about sharing their glory with their mates. I can definitely appreciate this but with a title like "Sniper One" I was figuring there would be more sniper work covered. (I learned that 'Sniper One' is the call-sign of the sniper company's commanding officer. He is the head sniper but much of his work was away from the cross-hairs.)The only things missing from this book are the same things missing from most military books...maps and a glossary. There needed to be maps in order for the reader to better follow along. Also, a glossary would have been nice for those of us that don't know things like rank and the size of various fighting units.

Title: Sniper One
Review: A vivid and colorful narrative of a six month tour of a British sniper platoon in Al Amarah, Irak. Apart from the snipers' peculiarities, such as special weapons and training, the book also conveys in a colloquial and very detailed way how is to serve a tour of duty in a country with a so different culture and roots. A must read for all interested in the middle east conflicts.

Review: This is great read, not an over the top book of rubbish, but makes you the reader feel that you were there, and gives an insight as to what it was like defending a small area in a hostile territory, where who the enemy is unclear until the action starts. Thanks Sgt Mills

Review: Nice book by Sgt. Mills. Although the book's size is small but it surely packs a punch. The book describes how the guys race to keep themselves alive while in Iraq's unforgiving battlefield. Totally awesome book. Worth the price.
