Popular blogger Anna Newell Jones of AndThenWeSaved.com delivers this self-help manifesto that reveals how a "spending fast" will help you get on the road to living debt free.
In 2009, young photographer Anna Newell Jones was rapidly suffocating under the weight of too much debt. An inveterate spender, she was in way over her head, to the tune of almost $24,000. She knew her debt was only going to get worse if she didn't take action, but she didn't know where to look for help. On a whim, Anna decided to go on a spending fast - an idea she heard in passing but knew little about. Creating her own method, she learned what worked and what didn't and wrote about it on her blog, AndThenWeSaved.com. Amazingly, Anna was able to eliminate all $23,605.10 of her debt in only 15 months! She was interviewed in Forbes, Self, Glamour, Good Housekeeping, and the Chicago Tribune.
Anna's journey inspired people and showed them that they too could change the way they dealt with their own money woes. The Spender's Guide to Debt-Free Living takes listeners through a detailed, step-by-step plan on how to do a spending fast and get out of debt, including:
Creating a personalized debt-free life pledge Understanding where your money is going when you're in debt and where it will come from to pay it off Learning why putting money into a savings account before (or while) paying off debt may not be the best idea for you Finding additional income sources and generating side gigs Reintegrating spending into your life once you're out of debt so that you stay out of debt
Filled with do-it-yourself ideas, insight from experts, and tons of motivational tips and real-life practical advice, The Spender's Guide to Debt-Free Living proves that you don't have to win the lottery or get a new job to change your life.

Title: Wonderful book with effective strategies
Review: This is a wonderful book! I've been trying (and failing) to get out of debt the last several years following Dave Ramsey's plan. I love his baby steps, podcasts, message, but it's hard to do if you and your spouse are not in sync with similar intensity/involvement. My hubby is supportive and encouraging, but doesn't bother with the budget or checking the accounts. I also struggle with impulse spending. This book is perfect if you are tackling this on your own (the author is married but paid off her own debts), or as a couple. The way she describes her thought process with spending is easy to relate to, and her perspective for paying off debt with the spending fast, needs vs wants list, reverse budgeting, and spending cycles is effective. My favorite takeaways so far:-With reverse budgeting, I was able to figure out how much money to set aside for hubby instead of trying to impose an unrealistic limit for him to fit my budget.-With the spending cycles, I don't have have a strict budget with every dollar accounted for. My focus, after paying for needs, is to spend as little as possible, and have a bigger payout at the end of the cycle for debt. It's a small mind-shift from how much can I spend in a category (budget) to how little can I spend (spending cycle). Not having to constantly re-adjust a budget has made me so much happier and pleasant to be around too.-Needs vs Wants list, simple and effective. It's helped curb my impulse spending.-Writing everything out in a check register. This is old school, but helps with accountability to myself. I'm hoping hubby will find this easier if he decides to get more involved with the detail stuff.

Title: Bought in support of my best friend and realized I have my own debt issues ...
Review: Bought in support of my best friend and realized I have my own debt issues to deal with. Great great great read and filled with activities/tasks to guide you to eliminating debt. The tasks take time but I'd encourage you to do them as debt is exactly like an amazing meal: Takes all of 5 minutes to devour it (create heaps of debt) but lots of time to prepare it/clean it up (plan/pay off debt). and it is so good while eating but you are left with a mess and by the time you are finished cleaning up you can't even remember how much you enjoyed it!! I've paid $1000 off since purchase 10 days ago and am not finished with the tasks or the book. But this is because I challenged myself in starting a fast as soon as I got the book and cannot buy a single thing until finished. YOU WILL FIND MONEY WHEN YOU STOP SPENDING!!! When finished I'll have a better idea and plan of true wants and needs and may not even want what I thought I needed at that point. (I have though bought gas and groceries but the TRUE basics, cheaper meals I know how to prepare) I have since already said no to coffee out about 7 times and online shopping including book shopping (went for the free ibooks) at least 3 times. Brought food/snacks into my longer days in the studio (I teach Pilates as well as run an ecommerce store). Declined lunch but bartered pet sitting for a coffee date. And started posting things online to sell from my house. Opted to go for online Pilates classes and spread out my private and small group lessons I'd already purchased as well. Oh and I had two online Pilates class memberships and cancelled one. Long story but I am rooting everyone on who has decided to take responsibility for their debt mess!!

Title: (I LOVE my kindle
Review: This book is inspirational. I first heard about this book from a review in "Better Investing" magazine, written by Angele McQuade. On her recommendation, I bought the ebook. (I LOVE my kindle!)The writing is very well done and I could completely identify with the author. I love the ideas she shares such as the one day garage sale. (Awesome idea for me, since I am in the middle of a major decluttering project of my home and garage.)Some her ideas for tackling debt are a teeny tiny bit of a rehash of standard debt paydown strategies, but she provides a new twist on these ideas which makes the book very worthwhile. Her lists of things to do without spending any money are amusing and helpful.Good book.

Title: Read the Whole Book in ONE Sitting! TONS of Great Ideas!!!
Review: This is a GREAT book! It was well-written, interesting, refreshingly honest, funny, and very easy to read. I found myself constantly taking notes while I was reading, and then going to her website and reading her website for hours. There were tons of great ideas in the book about how to curb and cut back on spending, and to take that extra money and pay off massive amounts of debt in a short period of time. She also has ideas about side gigs to help earn more money. I immediately passed this book along to friends to read and started planning my own spending fast! I can't wait to see what else she puts out in the future. I gobbled up this whole book in a single night; couldn't put it down!

Review: I started following the andthenwesaved blog a couple of years ago and found it really motivated me to do a spending diet. I'm now about to start a spending fast and this book has given me the knowledge to do this. I also feel so much less alone in this new challenge and so much less embarrassed by the situation I am in financially. The best self help book I have read in years.
