How to use the principles of Pixar-style storytelling to meet the needs of entrepreneurs, marketers, and business-minded storytellers of all stripes.

Pixar movies have transfixed viewers around the world and stirred a hunger in creative and corporate realms to adopt new and more impactful ways of telling stories. Former Pixar and The Simpsons animator and story artist Matthew Luhn translates his two and half decades of storytelling techniques and concepts to the CEOs, advertisers, marketers, and creatives in the business world and beyond. A combination of Luhn's personal stories and storytelling insights, The Best Story Wins retells the "Hero's Journey" story building methods through the lens of the Pixar films to help business minds embrace the power of storytelling for themselves!

Title: Super Solid 4.5
Review: As the author says several times, “The most powerful person will always be the storyteller.” He’s not wrong. And this extremely practical, engaging, entertaining, and full to the brim book of real world experience will no doubt help you in your quest to tell a better story. Originally I was going to give this a 4.44 and leave it at 4 stars, but that was until I read the last chapter on becoming a better writer. As simple as it was, it provided some really outstanding ideas for honing your craft as well as practical solutions for very common obstacles in addition to the rich content, perspective, and sage advice that comprised the rest of the book. Overall, I found the author and this book to be both incredibly endearing and equally helpful. Recommended for anyone who wants to tell a better story and who wants to learn from one of the best in the game!

Title: Storytelling Guidance with Examples from Pixar and Mainstream Products
Review: "Just like a baby is born knowing how to swim, we're also born knowing how to tell stories... with some simple guidance, clear instruction, and a bit of practice, we can all relearn how to be great storytellers--just like we can relearn how to swim."Fantastic read. Insightful. Concise. Real. Practical. Clear and relevant examples: stories that drive home the point. Teaches without preaching. The lessons that Matthew teaches in storytelling - such as story structure, inciting incident, beginning/middle/end, character development - aren't unique to the book, but Matthew introduces techniques that he has used at Pixar that I haven't read elsewhere: Character invocation, the story spine, memory prompts, the mental waiting room, character archetypes. I love his step-by-step approach to generating stories from thin air, and how he always follows the technique with examples from his story development at Pixar. In the context of company stories, Matthew also brings leadership into the picture, citing examples from Walt Disney and Steve Jobs' techniques leading Disney, Apple, and Pixar; this speaks to the importance of story on a visceral, human level, and I could relate as a leader of my own team.My only nitpick is that the cover was made of a matte material that felt cheap and gritty to the touch, rather than a glossier material more commonly attributed to quality books.

Title: Great insights
Review: Great insights into humanity and the way we think and interact. Love his practical tips on using the art of storytelling to connect both on a personal level and in business. I listened to this with Alexa and her reading is a bit choppy and lacks inflection so that is affecting the missing 5th star in my rating.

Title: A Winning Book
Review: As a fellow storyteller who’s worked for companies including Disney, Lucasfilm and Forbes, I’ve worked with top Creative Directors and inspiring leaders, but no one has expanded my mind as much as Matthew Luhn. Not only is Matthew’s book extremely entertaining (his personal anecdotes are amazing), but his knowledge is gold. I sit with this book next to my laptop almost every day, and reference it throughout each brainstorm. This book is oh-so valuable for anyone looking to understand how to uniquely position a company or an idea... and craft a story that will win.

Review: Although I’ve studied a lot about storytelling and even taught it in corporate trainings, I was surprised about how much I learned in this book. There are great books about storytelling, most famously about the hero’s journey. For me, this is one of the best. In its simplicity, it captures a lot of the essence of more complex structures, while making it super functional for the average person. Not only that, the behind the scenes of Pixar makes it a super fun read. Couldn’t recommend enough.
