INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

“The Best Strangers in the World is a witty, poignant book that captures Ari Shapiro’s love for the unusual, his pursuit of the unexpected, and his delight at connection against the odds.”—Ronan Farrow, Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist and New York Times-bestselling author of Catch and Kill and War on Peace

From the beloved host of NPR's All Things Considered, a stirring memoir-in-essays that is also a lover letter to journalism.

In his first book, broadcaster Ari Shapiro takes us around the globe to reveal the stories behind narratives that are sometimes heartwarming, sometimes heartbreaking, but always poignant. He details his time traveling on Air Force One with President Obama, or following the path of Syrian refugees fleeing war, or learning from those fighting for social justice both at home and abroad.

As the self-reinforcing bubbles we live in become more impenetrable, Ari Shapiro keeps seeking ways to help people listen to one another; to find connection and commonality with those who may seem different; to remind us that, before religion, or nationality, or politics, we are all human. The Best Strangers in the World is a testament to one journalist’s passion for Considering All Things—and sharing what he finds with the rest of us.

Title: A set of remarkable stories from a truly amazing and extraordinary human being!
Review: Ari is a brilliant writer who engages from the first sentence on. His stories range from humorous anecdotes to serious issues that he explores with sensitivity and insight. At times I laughed out loud and at others was moved to tears.Ari's focus in his career and life is all about what connects people to each other rather than what divides us. He expresses this in many creative avenues; including his NPR reporting, music, and even cooking!!! Today's world is difficult to live in. Ari's approach is one of love, respect and courage. I encourage everyone to read this book!

Title: A must read!
Review: I don’t read a lot of non-fiction, but absolutely loved this book. I listen to NPR daily and enjoyed reading into the behind-the scenes of journalism, and learning what might motivate, discourage, and excite those in this line of work. This book filled me with emotions, giving me moments of both laughter and tears.

Title: Wonderful read
Review: I loved this book. Ari Shapiro is well known for his tenure hosting All Things Considered, but he's so much more including a co-host of a cabaret show with Alan Cumming and singer with Pink Martini. Even if you know some or most of this, there's a lot to be learned from this look into his career and life from a queer kid in Fargo, North Dakota to the voice everyone knows.

Title: despite ADD, I read this book straight through and loved it!!!!
Review: I adore NPR and have been listening for years, so started this book expecting a great read. It most certainly IS a great read. I could hardly stop to eat.....I guess it made me hyperfocus!! I have ADD and rarely read a book straight through without checking the ending, but I did with this one. It is well-written and so interesting! And since I am a clueless old lady, I had never noticed that Ari Shapiro is gay, so that part was really interesting, also. I can recommend the book without reservation unless you are a bigot. In that case, fuhgeddabaht it.

Title: Not what I was expecting based on the title
Review: This was mostly a book about all the cool things the author has done personally and very little about the people he reported on. There are lots of stories of his personal accomplishments and many about his gay life. I did not find it all that interesting and several times thought about not completing the book. Kudos to Ari but not to his book with this particular title.

Title: The voice in my head
Review: If, like me, you are a committed NPR listener, you will read this with Ari's voice in your head. And you won't be disappointed. This is a memoir of the stories behind and adjacent to the stories you've been listening to him tell on the radio all these years. They are funny and sad and beautiful and hopeful. Enjoy!

Title: Inspiration to better understand the people that make up the world we live in..
Review: The world would be a better place if there were more people like Ari Shapiro in it. His deep intellect and insights are truly inspirational. Reading this book has given me a deeper appreciation of what is important in news and current events, and how I can understand the story more deeply when I learn about how events impact the real people affected. I realize this has always been a part of how I learn, but reading this book gave it deeper clarity. It is also his joyfulness balanced with his deep emotional bonds to other people that make this book such a joy to read. I highly recommend it.

Title: A fascinating look into Ari's travels in listening
Review: I actually bought the book after seeing Ari and Alan Cumming in their show Och & Oy at the Patricia Reser Center for the Arts in Beaverton, OR. Ari even gets into explaining how they came up with Och & Oy in the book. It is an easy read. The best quote is direct from the Book Jacket: "The Best Strangers in the World is a testament to one journalist's passion for Considering All Things - and sharing what he finds with the rest of us."
