The classic nonfiction World War II submarine combat thriller, written by a man who actually fought the battles.
The war beneath the waves.
For the World War II submariner, every day was a life-or-death trial: going to sea for months at a time; existing in dank, claustrophobic conditions; enduring long stretches of monotonous silence punctuated by adrenaline-spiked episodes of paralyzing fear and victorious elation. It was a duty few men could handle—and even fewer would survive.
This is the true story of those brave men who served and too often died under the ocean surface, written by a man who was there. Edward L. Beach masterfully weaves his gripping experiences aboard the USS Trigger with those of other boats fighting the war in the Pacific. Part action-packed combat chronicle, part testament to the courageous sacrifices made by those who never came back, this is a compelling eyewitness account of the war as few have seen it.

Title: Great, enjoyable book
Review: Great, enjoyable book. Each chapter is well written as a mission by one of several submarines. CAPT Beach participated in some and others he wrote using information supplied by others. It is more light reading than many other books on WW II submarines and I would suggested this as a first book for anyone to read on this subject. Those that may have read other submarine books will find this book lacking in the detail and background that others would provide but SUBMARINE! will not disappoint.

Title: Ned Beach is the best there is in submarine books!!
Review: Ned Beach is arguably the best submarine writer in the history of submarine books. This book is great! When it comes to submarineing, Beach went there and did that. He served aboard diesel-electric subs during World War II, and went on to skipper what was then the world's largest nuclear submarine (the SSN Triton) around the world submerged on her maiden voyage. In the submarine world, he knew everyone who was anyone. He also served as naval aide to Dwight Eisenhower during his presidency. As a submariner, he bridged the gap between conventional diesel-electric subs, and nuclear submarines.Beach wrote quite a few books. I've read most of 'em, and enjoyed every one. The man could write, and he knew how to tell a great story. He wrote "Run Silent, Run Deep", made into a Hollywood movie with none other than Burt Lancaster no less.In the late 1950's a television show by the title of Silent Service was made (much of it is now on the net). It's a series of well-made reenactments of critical events in World War II submarine history. In several of the episodes, Ned Beach is played by none other than Russell Johnson, later the professor on Gilligan's Island. Since in real life, Johnson actually flew 44 missions as a gunner-navigator aboard a B-25 medium bomber during World War II, and was decorated for his work, it's appropriate that he got to play Ned Beach. I hope the two men met each other at some point during production of the series. I grew up reading Ned Beach submarine books. I wish I'd had the chance to meet him. He died in 2002.Beach Hall at the U.S. Naval Academy is named for Ned, and for his father, another well-noted U.S. naval officer and writer.Read this book if you have any interest at all in knowing the history of the submarine's activity, especially during World War II. This guy could write. You'll enjoy the book!

Title: Excellent WW2 Submarine non fiction
Review: Superb book. Don't write reviews much. This is an older book, but each chapter is bursting with not only facts/history, but drama, excitement and levity about each sub crew the author documents. If you like anything Navy or WW2 this is a great book.

Title: Old favorite!
Review: My mother bought me this book when I was a teenager, maybe 60 years ago. It was at our summer home and left there over the winter and I think I may have read it each summer for about three years. In finding my way through it again I remembered a lot of the detail of the stories presented by Mr. Beach. You cannot read this book without requiring a terrific sense of what it was like to be in a battle under the sea and facing eminent death time after time after time. I feel the author has done a fantastic job of presenting the world war actions of a submariner. Once I picked up this book again after 60 years I was able to rush right through it. Not wanting to ever said it down.Iâve always found an affection for the stories of the naval war in the Pacific and also the air war in the Pacific. For reasons I donât understand I like this a lot more than the books about the war in Europe. For someone who likes a lot of action in the reading I would highly recommend this book. Also for the historical fact that is presented by the author this book is exceptionally full of detail including dates and commands that are given an explanation for why a ship might be driven to do one action versus another. It sure makes the war seem alive and the sense of suffering that the men in those roles went through while fighting World War II.

Title: Great read
Review: I've read many WW2 books. Some read like college history books (a bit boring) buy not this one. Submarine is very interesting and includes first hand experiences in a sub attacking the enemy. It is never dull and easy to read. I learned a great deal that I didn't know about submarine warfare during the war. I really enjoy the first hand accounts of the war over many other WW2 boos. I loved this book.n

Title: RIVETING ESCAPADES.
Review: "... a depth charge is something you never get used to" (p. 116). Intense dramatic vignettes of various WWII battle submarines in their compelling engagements with the enemy. Also, applause for the author's acclaimed fictional masterpiece "Run Silent, Run Deep." For more true submarine thrills, suggest books by Vice Admiral Charles A. Lockwood (Commander Submarines Pacific Fleet), and, Rear Admiral Richard H. O'Kane (Medal Of Honor).Fascinating how author Captain Beach was involuntarily transferred from a destroyer to submarine school, and subsequently, grew to love his new home.

Review: I have to admit to being a book junkie, and read a very wide selection of both fiction and non-fiction. This one is a historical novel based on fact, and pulls no punches. The style at times is a little stilted but in no way detracts from the core of the book. Which tells a difficult true story which in its self is a little hard to understand but this book helps to make clear the subject with out romanticization. A true but sad part of WW2, which is little known in the UK as we are more used to stories of the u-boats and forget about the Pacific sea battles .

Review: Well written and very readable. Not too wordy in the way that some American books are. i.e. less prone to use 20 words where three or four would suffice.

Review: I gave this book to my husband for Christmas and he said it was the best book he ever read. Now he does really love submarines. But then he insisted that I also read it and reluctantly I did. It really is very good. It is written very well and you just want to keep reading to find out what happens.
