Title: 'Tis the gift to be simple, 'tis the gift to be free
Review: Thanksgiving in the Woods by Phyllis Alsdurf with illustrations by Jenny Lovlie is based on the true story of a family in upstate New York that hosts an outdoor Thanksgiving feast every year on their farm. They invite friends, family, and even newcomers to take part of the celebration, which includes, singing, bonfires, and lots of food to share!A young boy is excited that it is time to visit his grandparents farm for Thanksgiving in the Woods! He packs his tool belt, rocks, a rope, a flashlight, and his favorite stuffed animal. After dad grabs his guitar and recorder, they all load into the truck and head to the farm. His cousins are building a fort right next to the stream, Uncle Charlie is making a bonfire, and Dad and grandpa are unloading tables and straw to sit on. “We all need to help if we’re going to have Thanksgiving in the Woods.”A tractor arrives filled with turkeys, mashed potatoes, peas, and corn. Neighbors arrive with apples, pickles, and pies. The young boy and his cousins eat in their fort before the music begins. There is dancing and singing, and once he is tired, dad puts him up on his shoulders and starts heading back to the farmyard. As they leave, they can hear people singing by the bonfire: ‘Tis the gift to be simple, ‘tis the gift to be free, ‘Tis the gift to come down where we ought to be. “Now that’s a perfect ending… a perfect ending to Thanksgiving in the Woods.”This is a beautiful book that I highly recommend adding to your home libraries! The lyrical style of writing and repetition of “Thanksgiving in the Woods,” makes this one enjoyable and easy to read aloud. The illustrations are colorful and fun. I love all the vibrant fall colors! All ages will appreciate this story of faith and family. My 4-year-old enjoyed looking at all the details of what everyone was up to in the woods, while I think it’s amazing that a family has been doing this for more than twenty years! I loved the illustrations of family and friends just being together, and the addition of the hymn was a nice touch. This book shows there is so much to be thankful for, and none of it is something you can buy.

Title: Repetitive, but otherwise cute
Review: I love this book as a whole. The pictures are beautiful, the message is of love and togetherness and the idea of doing this big get-together with friends, family and friends of others is lovely. My only complaint is that after the 3rd, "Thanksgiving in the woods" gets reeeeally annoying and repetitive to the point that I end up skipping saying that part every other time it's on a page because it makes it sound like an infomercial where they keep saying the product name over and over to get it to stick in people's minds. I wish the author didn't overuse it like that. Otherwise, this book is wonderful.
