2014 release, the eighth album from Dave Grohl and Co. Though not a soundtrack album by any stretch, SONIC HIGHWAYS shares it's title with the Grohl-directed eight-episode HBO series described by Grohl as a love letter to the history of American music. For the album and series, the Foo Fighters wrote and recorded one song in each of these eight cities, delving into the local musical currents. All songs feature local legends sitting in, with every lyric written in an unprecedented experimental style. 'This album is instantly recognizable as a Foo Fighters record, but there's something deeper and more musical to it. I think that these cities and these people influenced us to stretch out and explore new territory, without losing our sound.' - Dave Grohl.

Title: A new direction that is both fresh and familiar.
Review: No, this is not Wasting Light. I'm glad it isn't because it shouldn't be.Upon first listen, my first thought on every track was "wow this is different, thank God." As much as I love Foo Fighters, I have been growing tired of the homogenous rut they have been in since One by One. While there have been a few songs that have been exceptions to that, over all it felt like Dave just hit auto-pilot for the last few albums and called it a day.Enter Sonic Highways.I have been a huge fan of this bands early material (everything before There is Nothing Left to Lose) since 1997, and this is the first time since The Colour and the Shape came out where I feel like Foo Fighters put out an entire album that has genuine inspiration behind it. This album feels real. Those of you looking for the predictable 3-minute-long Foo Fighters single that you've grown accustomed to, keep looking. You won't find it on Sonic Highways.Instead, you'll find arguably the most progressive album this band has released that sounds both familiar but brand new at the same time. Whether you're headbanging to the modern hard rock outro of "Something From Nothing", driving through the countryside with the southern rocker "Congregation", staring out the window at a gloomy, rainy day with the indie/shoe-gaze sounding "Subterranean", or dusting off your record player to jam out to the classic rock sounding "Outside" you can be sure this album will keep you engaged.I've long wondered what happened to that 'spark' that can't be explained that was present on the band's first two albums. I had high hopes for Echoes, Silence, Patience, and Grace as well as Wasting Light and while both of those albums have some great songs on them, that spark I was hoping for just wasn't there. The spark, I am happy to say, has returned for Sonic Highways. This is the Foo Fighters album that for the last 17 years I have been clamoring for. I cannot stop listening to it. My only complaint is that there are only 8 songs to love!ALBUM HIGHLIGHTS:OutsideSomething From NothingCongregation

Title: More Great Rock from FF
Review: I am giving this album 5 stars (4.6) based on what else is out there right now, not necessarily compared to their other work. This album is somewhere in the middle of their work. But that still makes it pretty damn good. I understand the concept too, but even without it, each song has its own character and if you listen just a little, you hear the originality each, even as they are purposely trying to connect them to other "sounds" in rock history.God As My Witness has a strength to it that brings most to my eyes. I love how it fades out as it still pounds that feeling.I could go on, but won't. If you like the Foo Fighters, just allow them to be what they wanna be and listen and enjoy. It's the best pure rock music out there in our age, in my opinion. I believe with each album, they are solidifying themselves in the Rock Gods category. I love when Dave was interviewed years ago and some morons were criticizing him for trying to be Nirvana again. He responded by saying something to the effect that yeah, he writes rock music, plays it, was doing that before and is still doing it. What do they expect?! Well, I believe the Foo Fighters led by Dave Grohl passed Nirvana years ago for music quality. And since he was a big part of it, he is also part of that "changed the music scene" with Nirvana's music. So I give him credit for that too, I don't detach him from it and I certainly don't deny or hold it against him. He keeps putting out great rock like this.

Title: I'm pretty much an unswayable fan so
Review: I'm not going to analyze each track for it's strong/weak points etc., plenty of people do that already and my opinion on that would just get lost in the crowd. I'm pretty much an unswayable fan so,, After basically wearing out Wasting Light and everything they have put out before that this album came. My first impression wasn't all that favorable. The album just seemed like a bit of a departure from anything they have ever done before and it's probably no accident. However after giving the album plenty of IPOD rotation I realized this album is probably one of my most favorite FF albums ever. I did some research on the production and found they recorded this album in 8 different cities at historical studios. I'm pretty sure many already know this so that's all I'll say about it.The special guest musicians on each track was a valuable addition especially since I like their work from the past. I mean how can you go wrong with Rick Nielson and Joe Walsh? This album is more or less a permanent staple on all of my music players and will remain there for an indefinite amount of time. Thanks guys for a great album and looking forward to the next. My advice, if you love the band, get this album, they don't produce anything bad. It will also cure a case of the blues when intense therapy is needed. It works for me anyway. It pairs well with the DVD Sonic Highway 3 disc documentary which really explains more about the album than anyone here ever can.
