“The queen of the football romance is not Taylor Swift. It’s Susan Elizabeth Phillips.”—Wall Street Journal

#1 New York Times bestselling author Susan Elizabeth Phillips returns with the next book in her Chicago Stars series where a successful sports agent and the sister of his biggest client engage in a take-no-prisoners battle of the sexes.

Take one hard-driving sports agent…

Throw in a failed chocolatier…

And her superstar football player brother…

Add a quirky pink and purple food truck…

Then, to really screw things up, mix in a very unfortunate murder.

Brett Rivers is the hottest sports agent in the business—fast and furious, swift and deadly. Failure? Not an option.

Rory Garrett is—let’s be honest—a disaster. She has a big heart, an empty bank account, a passion for making exquisite chocolate, and a huge inferiority complex from living in the shadow of Brett’s most important client, her football legend brother.

Brett and Rory should never have met, and they absolutely, positively should never have had to deal with the consequences of one stupid, drunken night…one disastrous lie…one career in jeopardy…one missing football player…and a very dead body.

It’s going to get messy…and dangerous…and heartbreaking…and sexy. To Rory, Brett represents skewed values and a devious mind. To Brett, Rory is forbidden fruit, off limits, do not disturb, and no entry—definitely no entry.

A woman who has succeeded at nothing and a man who’s succeeded at everything confront the challenge of their lives as they struggle with themselves and each other. When it comes to love—what price are any of us willing to pay to be simply the best?

Title: SUSAN ELIZABETH PHILLIPS AT HER VERY BEST
Review: Johnny Mercer wrote a beautiful song “I Remember You.” That is the way I feel about this book. This book is a reminder of why I have nearly every book Ms Phillips has written. The story opens with two people having a really impressive meeting at a party. The party was given by a professional football quarterback.Rory is a chocolatier. She is half sister to, Clint, the star quarterback for the pro football team, the Chicago Stars. She is feeling down and she lets her vulnerability take over. Her weakness leads her to a hot and heavy meeting with a man. He is gone in the middle of the night and he leaves $500.00 for her. She is livid. And she does not even know who he is yet.The man who spent time with Rory just happens to be the agent for the star quarterback for the Chicago Stars, Clint. Brett has never met Rory. The two of them did not know one another and then they did know one another in the most intimate way.The fact that they met one another causes problems on so many levels. The Stars would not like it, Clint would not like it and Brett’s boss would not like it. But, other than that, everything is wonderful. Not.The two of them have extremetly witty conversations. The banter is priceless and filled with what everyone wants to say but never thinks of it at the right time.Rory does not feel her family appreciates her. She believes that she cannot measure up to Clint and all his success. Her step-mother has never had a problem pointing out all the things that are wrong with Rory and her choices. Their relationship is one of the most interesting parts of this story.Brett is a workaholic, an overachiever, a man who only cares about his job. He is quite open that as far as he is concerned, relationships are overrated. He is intelligent and quite able to take good care of his clients. He is on the way to the top of his profession. This book has a murder mystery. One of the characters is killed and there is little evidence pointing toward the killer. The lack of evidence gives Rory and Brett the opportunity to do some detecting on their own,.This book is wonderful. Ms Phillips is known for producing books which give the reader an entertaining time. This book does that and then some.I am so glad I got to read another story of the Chicago Stars and all the people who support the team. If the NFL is this exciting, it is no wonder so many people love the game.

Title: Romance, Mystery, Humor and a Great Case of Characters
Review: FINAL DECISION: With two characters who have more in common than at first glance, this messy and sexy story with some mystery was really enjoyable.THE STORY: Brett Rivers is a cutthroat sports agent known as "The River" who is devoted to his job when a costly mistake involving his top client puts his career at risk. Rory Garrett is struggling to launch her chocolate business after having a drunken misunderstanding with Brett that makes her feel like a failure yet again. But when an unexpected event happens involving Rory's celebrity footballer brother and his ex-girlfriend, she and Brett reluctantly join forces, both wanting to find Rory’s brother - Rory to help her brother and Brett to save his career. Despite their mutual attraction, their differences threaten to undermine their goals...unless they can work together to unravel the mystery, confront their personal demons, and maybe even find an unlikely happy ending.OPINION: Phillips' latest Chicago Stars romance is classic SEP fun. Rory dreams of having her own chocolate shop, but she's broke. Her half-brother Clint is a famous football player with a lot of money. Brett is Clint's agent who helps manage his career. Rory and Brett don't like each other at first. (Well, actually they kind of do, but I'll leave that surprise for readers) But then something happens with Clint and the two have to work together. As Rory and Brett spend more time together, they start to enjoy each other's company. Rory is messy and disorganized but super creative. Brett is very organized and responsible. Opposites attract, and the chemistry between these two is hot. What I loved best is that as the book goes on, Brett is shown to be more of an emotional mess than expected and Rory has responsibility and maturity in different ways. This is not a true "enemies to lovers" but comes pretty close. Watching them go from antagonism to deep love is what SEP excels at. You just know they are perfect for each other even when they fight. There are also some funny side stories with Rory's stepmom Kristin. I loved that SEP did not make her a caricature as she first appeared. This book has everything great about SEP's writing: humor, steamy romance, interesting mystery, and characters who are at their core decent people. Rory and Brett have their flaws as humans but end up balancing each other out nicely.WORTH MENTIONING: I want Clint's book now. He's much more interesting now with some darkness and baggage.CONNECTED BOOKS: SIMPLY THE BEST is the tenth book in the Chicago Stars series. This book can be read as a standalone. While there are mentions and cameos from other characters in the series, they are limited, and there is no overarching plot. Brett works for Heath Champion, so we get some glimpses of Heath and Annabelle from MATCH ME IF YOU CAN (Chicago Stars book 6).STAR RATING: I give this book 5 stars.

Title: Made my mouth water as I laughed
Review: Susan Elizabeth Phillips always delivers a great read but this has CHOCOLATE!How can a broke, irrepressible chocolatier make a living in a pink and purple food truck? The way she does it is full if laughs, scares, and so many descriptions of luscious chocolate my mouth watered.A delightfully written read by a favorite author.

Title: sweet story
Review: The beginning was really hard with endless insults and bickering that no human would engage in. I know it was meant to be funny but it made me not like the heroine until she finally had her turning point, and the hero had some learning to do but it was good to see his inner struggle. The relationship changes in the heroine’s family were my favorite part and what I was waiting and hoping for, and all resolved nicely. I think as a romance it does what many romances fail to do and that have two people who learn their flaws and weaknesses because of the relationship and also grow because of the relationship. Though, again the heroine was emphasizing that relationships and emotional intimacy were what the hero needed yet she didn’t have that in her life at all or understand how to develop it or show him how to so that was a weakness in her story arc because she had to learn it herself.

Review: The SEP of Heaven, Texas, It had to be you, Nobody's Baby but mine is MIA. This book is not up to her usual standard of wit and humour, with sex thrown in for good measure. Avoidable, unfortunately.

Review: 5 Simply the Best StarsI remember the first SEP book I read about 16 years ago and after that book I was hooked. I borrowed it from my local library and tried to get as many of her books I could but back then I ended up getting them second hand on amazon. That first book was It Had to Be You the first book in the Chicago Stars Series. All her books are a must read for me.Simply the Best is the tenth book in the series and SEP has added some Murder to her Hockey Romances and I'm here for it!Rory Meadows is struggling through life and trying her best to get her carer of the ground. But bad luck just follows her around. He Half-brother Clint is an NFL star and wins at everything. She can't help but be envious of his winning personality. But then there's a murder and it turns both the lives upside down. Rory is used to things going heads up, but Clint is not and disappears. His ever-present sports agent, Brett Rivers, is always by his side but can't seem to find him either. Rory and Brett team up to find him. This is jammed packed full of SEP’s epic snarky humour, banter and with a magnificent whodunit murder mystery to boot. Added appearances from Heath and Annabelle (Match Me If You Can) to add to the fun.Highly recommend this book.
